Dan Priyasad’s brother hacked to death in Wellampitiya
26.07.2022

A 34-year old man, who has been identified as the brother of Dan Priyasad had been hacked to death last night near the Orugodawattha flyover in Wellampitiya.

Police said the victim, a resident of Kuruniyawatta in Wellampitiya was attacked by two men and had died after being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The Wellampitiya Police are investigating the murder.

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will return to the country from Singapore, said Cabinet Spokesperson Bandula Gunawardena today.

Singapore has issued a 14-day short-term travel permit to the former president, who arrived in the country on July 14 on a personal visit, according to Singapore immigration officials.

Wear masks again to prevent COVID-19 spread

The Health Ministry urges the public to wear a well-fitting face mask, avoid crowded places and also to follow all COVID -19 preventive measures since there is a risk of COVID-19 spreading in the country once again.

Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Hemantha Herath said that the number of people infected with COVID-19 is increasing once again and as per the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry Health, 56 COVID-19 cases were reported on Sunday (25).


The total number of COVID cases had increased to 664,900 as at yesterday morning with 56 new cases reported on Sunday. Around 647,623 patients have fully recovered while 740 infected patients are currently under medical care at hospitals and homes.

The Health Authorities also urge the public to get the second booster dose (fourth dose) of COVID 19 vaccine without any delay. The Ministry of Health said that the public interest in getting the second booster dose is still at a minimum level and as per the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health only 11,197,563 doses which includes 11,184,014 dose of Synopharm and 13,549 doses of Pfizer have already been administered as the second booster dose. According to the health authorities anyone over 20 years of age can obtain the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. It has been recommended for persons over 60 years of age and those suffering from chronic medical conditions, which are a high-risk group, to urgently obtain the fourth dose.


Anyone over 20 years of age can obtain this fourth dose by meeting the Medical Officer of Health after receiving a date and time.

Nearly 16 million people have received the first dose while about 14 million people have received the second dose. About 8 million people have received the third dose while approximately 13,700 have received the fourth dose.

Suspect remanded for posting hate speech on Face Book

Galle Magistrate Pavithra Sanjivani Pathirana yesterday (25) ordered a suspect who had been arrested for posting a note containing hateful speech on the Face Book encouraging violence against the Police and the Tri-Forces in support of the Galle Face protesters, be remanded until August 8.

The suspect is a resident of Fort, Galle. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who had arrested the suspect on the alleged charges produced him before the Magistrate. The CID officials objected to the defendant lawyer’s appeal to grant bail for the suspect.

When the suspect’s lawyer requested that the suspect be granted bail,Criminal Investigation Department officers who handled the complaint said that they objected to the suspect’s bail. Officials of the Matara Unit of the Computer Crimes Investigation Division prosecuted.

Travel ban on Cabraal further extended till October 26

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's court today further extended its order preventing former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal from leaving the country until October 26.

Meanwhile, Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala ordered to re-issue notices on former Central Bank Governor to appear in court on October 26.

The Court made this order consequent to a request made by former Southern Province Governor Rajith Keerthi Thennakoon through a private plaint filed in terms of section 136(1)(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.

FOREX crisis may restrict fuel imports in the next 12 months

Power and Energy Minster Kanchana Wijesekera today said that fuel imports including diesel and petrol have to be restricted in the next 12 months due to FOREX issues.

He said the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has never distributed fuel daily to every single fuel station.

The QR system was introduced since the daily fuel demand could not be fulfilled. Even with unlimited stocks, it is practically impossible, the Minister added.

Dullas’ SLPP group to sit in Opposition separately

The group of members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna who supported Dullas Alahapperuma for the Presidency will work as a separate independent group in Parliament, political sources said. These sources said the group led by Dullas Alahapperuma includes around 16 members including Prof.G.L. Peiris, Prof.Charita Herath, Prof. Channa Jayasumana and Dr. Nalaka Godahewa among others. Sources say that the group is will sit in the parliamentary Opposition as a separate group.

This group is also focusing on building a new political movement in the future.

Prof. G.L. Peiris, who previously held the position of Foreign Affairs Minister lost his post when the new Cabinet was appointed.

Peiris, who was the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Chairman, proposed the name of Dullas Alahapperuma for the election of the President in Parliament last week.
