Everyone thinks crises need strong, fast, unilateral decisions. No time to talk. No time to consult. Just act. 🤔

But that’s usually when things go wrong 👎

Social dialogue may look slower, but it actually keeps crises from spilling everywhere. It brings people onto the same page, builds trust, and turns reactions into shared responses. When there’s communication, negotiation, and shared responsibility, decisions hold. 🤝

Justice Prevails in Vithya’s Case.

Vithya’s story is one of unimaginable tragedy - an 18‑year‑old schoolgirl whose life was brutally taken in 2015.

After years of trials and appeals, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka delivered its final verdict on May 6, 2026, affirming the convictions and death sentences of four men, including Swiss Kumar, the instigator. Two others were acquitted for lack of evidence, while one accused passed away during the proceedings.

Nearly nine years later, this verdict stands as a solemn reminder of the long pursuit of justice, the resilience of her family, and the collective demand of a community determined to see accountability for such horrific crimes committed.

⚖️ When does political rhetoric cross into judicial interference?

Recent remarks by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake about pending court cases have triggered strong criticism from the BASL, Free Lawyers Association and the Opposition, who argue that predicting or celebrating future verdicts risks undermining judicial independence and the separation of powers.

Supporters may see it as anti-corruption confidence. Critics see it as executive pressure on the courts.

Swipe through for the legal concerns, constitutional arguments, and the growing political debate surrounding the issue. 🇱🇰

Sri Lanka’s Online Safety Act in action.

⚖️The case? The first case was filed in April 2024 by former PUCSL Chairman Janaka Rathnayake, who said private information about him was being shared online. He was classified as a ‘targeted individual’ under the Act (i.e. a person who has been deliberately and repeatedly harassed through the communication of false statements).

🧑🏼‍⚖️The order? After nearly two years, on April 23, 2026 the Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama made permanent the orders against two respondents (his former assistant Gayathri Bimba and academic Prof. Janaka Rajapaksha). As a result the two respondents are restrained from communicating the alleged false information. The order against the other respondents were dismissed.

⚠️The broader implications? This being the first case instituted under Sri Lanka’s controversial Online Safety Act shows the law is now fully operational. It sets an early precedent for how the Act will be applied, while raising wider questions about balancing protection from harassment with privacy rights and freedom of expression in the digital age.

💸 Hackers stole $2.5 million from Sri Lanka’s Treasury using fake emails. Investigators traced part of it to Delaware under a front company, but most accounts are empty – as initially reported by the Sunday Times.

🔍 A global manhunt is on with the FBI and Australian police involved, while Sri Lanka tightens its security to stop future scams.

Another payment controversy? Looks like it 👀

On 07th May, the Finance Ministry admitted to an erroneous double payment linked to April Aswesuma payments. 💳

This revelation comes in the backdrop of the USD 2.5 million Treasury cyber hack and the RDA duplicate contractor payments. The list of payment errors are starting to stack up at an alarming and concerning rate.

These are all public funds. So we need to ask the bigger questions, scrutinize the process, and demand accountability before more “errors” or “accidental” payments drain resources and impact overall public funds governance.

Sri Lanka’s shrinking current account surplus

The current account of any country is made up of 4 elements:

1️⃣Trade balance: Exports minus imports of goods

2️⃣Services Account balance: Earnings from tourism, IT, shipping etc. minus payments for foreign services.

3️⃣Primary Income Account: Interest on loans and returns to foreign investors.

4️⃣Secondary Income Account: Remittances from Sri Lankans abroad minus transfers out.

Sri Lanka still has a current account surplus, but the cushion is shrinking with the current account surplus dropping by 44% when we compare Jan - Mar 2025 vs 2026.

If imports keep rising and services earnings stay weak, this surplus could erode further, putting pressure on reserves and the rupee.
