💼 CEB’s New Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) 💼

As part of its 2025 restructuring, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has introduced a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), offering eligible staff an option for early retirement with financial compensation. The initiative aims to reduce excess staffing and streamline operations as CEB transitions into multiple successor companies.

While the scheme is officially voluntary, it has sparked significant debate over job security, the adequacy of the compensation formula, and broader concerns about the future of Sri Lanka’s public electricity sector. ⚡️

🇳🇵In early September 2025, youth-led protests in Nepal against corruption and nepotism escalated into violent unrest following a government-imposed social media ban. Some demonstrators stormed and set fire to the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, and residences of senior leaders, prompting the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the deployment of the army to restore order.

✉️ Sri Lanka’s Former President Wickremesinghe issuing a statement on the crisis, highlighted the broader concern that attacks on institutional structures - regardless of political grievances threaten the foundational pillars of democratic governance. He further condemned the violence from all parties and emphasized that these acts of destruction, particularly in a country revered as the birthplace of the Buddha represent a breakdown of democratic order and a failure of governance, urging Nepal’s military to restore peace and uphold constitutional processes.

💰Sri Lanka’s foreign worker remittances surpassed USD 5.1 Billion from January to August 2025, marking a 19.3% YoY increase. The surge reflects rising overseas employment and improved formal transfer channels, reinforcing remittances as a key pillar of Sri Lanka’s external sector recovery.

📂UNFPA’s latest report shows a major gap in Sri Lankan politics; Women are half the population but barely in Parliament, ranking 135th worldwide. Funding struggles, online abuse, and cultural barriers keep them out, though solutions are on the table. ⚖️

What do you think it’ll take to change this?

⚡️ Unpacking the CEB ‘Unbundling’ ⚡️

Sri Lanka’s electricity giant CEB is to be separated into 4 new state-owned companies generation, transmission, distribution and system operations.

The aim? More efficiency, clearer roles, and space for private investment.

But with staff transfers, compensation packages, and union concerns in play, will this restructuring spark real reform or just shift the wires around? 🔌

🔻In a high-profile joint operation between Jakarta Police and Sri Lanka’s CID, five alleged underworld figures were extradited and detained for 90 days under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) - a move that has reignited debate over the law’s continued use.

🔻 The court granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to detain the 5 individuals for 90 days under the PTA. However, questions loom over whether the PTA, long criticized for enabling arbitrary detention, is being stretched beyond its intended scope.

🔻Back in April 2025, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara clarified that the PTA would not be repealed until the new law was introduced. He also dismissed claims that the PTA had been used to arrest individuals for drug-related or organized crime offences, stating that the law had not been applied in such cases. “For non-terrorism related activities, I have not seen the PTA being used,” he said, clarifying that such offences fall under the Penal Code and would be prosecuted through standard legal procedures.

🔻However in contradiction in July 2025, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala acknowledged the PTA’s use in organized crime cases, but emphasized the urgency of reform: “New legal provisions will be necessary to continue addressing such cases effectively.” He confirmed that the Ministry of Justice is drafting new laws to give police the legal authority to detain and question organized crime suspects under a modern framework.

🔻 In August 2025, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath assured that, “There is no debate. The PTA will be repealed.” He confirmed that a legal committee led by President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne had nearly finalized the amendments, with a Gazette Notification expected in early September 2025.

Now, as September unfolds and with more arrests under PTA, the questions remain:
↪ Why was the PTA used for recent organized crime arrests?
↪ Were there established links to terrorism at the time of the arrests?
↪ Will the government deliver on its overall pledge to repeal the PTA this month?

Are you happy with Female Parliamentary Representation in Sri Lanka? 🤔

📜Sri Lanka made history in 1960 by appointing the world’s first female Prime Minister, setting a global precedent for women in leadership. Yet, over five decades later, progress has been slow. Sri Lanka now ranks 135th out of 193 countries for female parliamentary representation, according to the World Economic Forum and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This is despite women making up 52% of the population.

🗳The 2024 parliamentary elections marked a step forward, with a record number of women elected to office and the appointment of Dr. Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister. However, the overall representation remains far from equitable.

🔺Deep-rooted cultural norms, structural barriers, and gender-based discrimination continue to hinder women’s full participation in politics. Achieving true gender equity will require more than quotas. It demands sustained commitment, inclusive policies, and a shift in societal attitudes.

Let’s keep pushing for meaningful change in Parliament, ensuring more women have a seat at the table and a voice in shaping Sri Lanka’s future.

Transparency under question? 🧐

On Aug 27, the Presidential Secretariat rejected an RTI request for President AKD’s domestic travel, citing national security. ⚖️ While safeguarding national security is paramount, the core question remains: could limited or redacted information have been disclosed to uphold the spirit of transparency? With an RTI appeal now underway, the decision to reject the RTI in the first instance has sparked debate over whether the RTI law is being fairly and consistently applied.

Back in July 2025, the Presidential Secretariat rejected an RTI request on President’s Media Division (PMD) staff details, citing privacy concerns. However critics argued that PMD staff are public officials, and their salaries are funded by taxpayer money, making the information subject to public scrutiny.

👉 Swipe to know more about the current RTI rejection and let us know what you think about these developments.

📈 Sri Lanka’s inflation turned positive in August 2025, rising to 1.2% year-on-year after 11 consecutive months of deflation, signaling a shift in consumer price trends.

➡ This marks a shift in price trends and suggests that the economy may be stabilizing, with early signs of recovery supported by policy measures. While inflation returning might raise eyebrows, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

🔮In terms of what we can expect in the coming months inflation wise, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka stated that, “The projections indicate a gradual acceleration of inflation in the period ahead, moving towards the target of 5%, with the support of appropriate policies.”

🚨 Forged Lease Scandal: Investigations Under Scrutiny

Serious allegations against Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe and Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal regarding a forged lease worth Rs. 3.6 million, yet the investigators at the Colombo Fraud Bureau (CFB) have been scrutinized in Court for delays and procedural concerns. ❗

🔵The Bureau reportedly delayed action, citing the Attorney General’s advice, a move criticized as misleading and evasive. The lack of transparency and urgency in the investigation has fueled widespread public frustration, intensifying calls for accountability in a case that allegedly implicates three prominent figures in the current political landscape.
