🚨 Nishantha Wickramasinghe Arrested: The Fall of a Politically-Protected Airline Chief? 🚨
Nishantha Wickramasinghe, the former Chairman of SriLankan Airlines and Mihin Air, was arrested on June 27, 2025, by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). His name has long symbolized the fusion of political power and public sector mismanagement—largely due to his close ties to the Rajapaksa family, particularly as the brother of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
CIABOC’s case against him centers around three critical incidents from 2014 each pointing to the abuse of public resources. These charges aren’t isolated slip-ups—they reflect a broader culture of politicized misuse of national resources. A 2015 government-commissioned report had already flagged his questionable role—along with then-CEO Kapila Chandrasena—in aircraft procurements, poor financial decisions, and mounting operational losses that led SriLankan Airlines toward near-collapse.
Wickramasinghe’s arrest comes as part of a renewed push for accountability in Sri Lanka’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs)—many of which were long insulated from scrutiny due to political protection. Now released on cash bail, the legal proceedings against him are expected to begin again by October 14th 2025, as investigators dig deeper into corruption-linked issues during his tenure.
This case is being watched closely as a litmus test for Sri Lanka’s commitment to rooting out entrenched corruption and rebuilding public trust in state institutions.
