🚨The assassination of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara in broad daylight inside his official chamber casts a shadow on the state of public security. On October 22nd a masked gunman, entered the premises of the local government institution and shot Weligama PS Chairman Wickramasekara multiple times while he was seated at his desk. He later passed away due to his injuries at the Matara General Hospital.
⚠ Investigations have revealed a contract killing allegedly funded from overseas, with 9 suspects arrested so far, including the shooter, his accomplice, and others who aided.
👉 Police stated that Wickramasekara was facing 6 criminal cases, including murder and serving a suspended sentence at the time of his death. Investigations revealed his alleged close ties to notorious drug trafficker “Harak Kata” and affiliated gang members. Police further confirmed that Wickramasekara had submitted a formal request to the IGP in early September, seeking security following credible death threats.
🥊 In the aftermath, there has been political clashes between the SJB and the Government, with both sides trading accusations over the handling of the incident. SJB leader Sajith Premadasa condemned the killing as an assault on democracy, demanding accountability for the failure to protect an elected official. Meanwhile, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala claimed in Parliament that Wickramasekara had underworld ties and was denied police protection for that reason.
Regardless of political affiliations, four hard truths must be confronted:
⚖️ An individual facing serious criminal allegations was elected to public office, raising concerns about candidate vetting, party.accountability and voter awareness.
⚖️Irregardless of that, a meticulously planned assassination was executed inside a local government premise.
⚖️If there are allegations against any individual, due legal process must prevail - not vigilante justice. Nor should such murders be condoned, brushed off or celebrated.
⚖️Public security is not a partisan issue, it is a democratic priority.
