The depth of nature

The depth of nature Nature, in the broadest sense, is the natural, physical, material world or universe.

"Nature" can refer to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. ... Although humans are part of nature

**REAL NATURE UPDATE 🌊**

AUGUST 2026

THE OCEAN IS RUNNING A FEVER.

This month the world’s oceans hit the HIGHEST average surface temperature ever recorded.

What’s happening:
1. **Marine Heatwaves**: Ocean temperatures in parts of the Atlantic & Pacific are 2-4°C above normal
2. **Coral Bleaching**: Reefs are turning white faster than ever
3. **Stronger Storms**: Warmer water = more fuel for hurricanes and cyclones
4. **Marine Life**: Fish and marine species are migrating to find cooler water

The ocean has absorbed over 90% of the extra heat from global warming.
Now that heat is showing up on the surface.

NOAA and Copernicus Climate confirm this breaks the previous record set in 2023.

When the ocean gets hot, the whole planet feels it.

**REAL NATURE UPDATE 🌧️**

AUGUST 2026

THE SAME CLIMATE. TWO EXTREMES.

This month the planet is showing both sides of climate extremes.

Some regions are drowning. Others are drying out.

What’s happening:
1. **Floods**: Several areas received 2-3x normal rainfall in just weeks
2. **Droughts**: Other areas have gone months with almost no rain
3. **Why**: El Niño + Indian Ocean Dipole are shifting where storms form
4. **Pattern**: "Wetter wet areas, drier dry areas" - this is what scientists predicted

The World Meteorological Organization confirms this is part of a larger pattern
linked to warmer oceans and changing weather systems.

Water is moving. Just not evenly.

AUGUST 2026

THE FIRES ARE SPREADING

This August, wildfires are burning hotter and faster than usual
across multiple continents.

It’s not just one region. It’s a global pattern.

Why now?
1. **Record Heat**: Temperatures are breaking records
2. **Drought**: Dry vegetation becomes perfect fuel
3. **El Niño**: Shifting weather patterns create fire-friendly conditions
4. **Strong Winds**: Help fires spread rapidly

What we’re seeing:
- **Bigger Fires**: Fires are growing faster and covering more area
- **Longer Seasons**: Fire season now lasts months longer than 20 years ago
- **More Smoke**: Air quality impacts felt hundreds of miles away
- **Carbon Release**: Fires add more CO2 to an already warming atmosphere

Scientists call this a feedback loop.
Heat causes fires. Fires release carbon. Carbon causes more heat.

AUGUST 2026

THE PLANET IS RUNNING A FEVER

August 2026 is on track to break global temperature records.
Again.

Heatwaves are not just hotter. They’re lasting longer,
covering more area, and hitting places that rarely see them.

What’s driving this:
1. **El Niño**: The Pacific Ocean is releasing massive heat
2. **Heat Domes**: High pressure systems trapping heat for weeks
3. **Warmer Baseline**: The planet is 1.2°C hotter than pre-industrial times

What we’re seeing globally:
- **Cities**: Nighttime temperatures not cooling down
- **Oceans**: Record hot sea surface temperatures
- **Land**: Wildfires, drought, and crop stress increasing
- **Ice**: Accelerated melting in polar regions

The World Meteorological Organization warns this is part of a trend,
not a one-off event.

This is what a changing climate looks like in real time.

**REAL NATURE UPDATE 🚀**

WE HIT THE MOON

This month, a spacecraft intentionally impacted the lunar surface.

Why would we do that?
Science.

When a rocket hits the Moon at high speed, it creates a flash and a dust cloud.
Telescopes on Earth and orbiters around the Moon study that impact.

What we learn:
1. **Moon Composition**: The dust tells us what the lunar surface is made of
2. **Crater Formation**: How impacts shape planets over billions of years
3. **Future Missions**: Data helps plan bases, mining, and safe landing zones
4. **Planetary Defense**: Understanding impacts helps us protect Earth

The Moon has no atmosphere. So every impact leaves a mark.
And every mark tells a story.

We’re not just looking at space anymore.
We’re interacting with it.

**REAL NATURE UPDATE 🌊**

THE INDIAN OCEAN IS FLIPPING

Scientists have declared a Positive Indian Ocean Dipole event is underway.
And it’s starting at the same time as a strong El Niño.

What is IOD?
Think of the Indian Ocean as a giant seesaw.
When it's "positive", the western Indian Ocean gets much warmer than normal.
The eastern Indian Ocean gets cooler.

Why should we care in Sri Lanka?
Because the Indian Ocean controls our rain.

A positive IOD + El Niño together usually means:
1. **Disrupted Monsoons**: Delayed onset, weaker rainfall over South Asia
2. **Drought Risk**: East Africa, parts of India, Southeast Asia
3. **Flood Risk**: East Africa can flip to extreme rainfall
4. **Stronger Cyclones**: Warmer western waters can fuel more intense storms

The Bureau of Meteorology and WMO are monitoring this closely.
When both El Niño and positive IOD are active, the impacts are amplified.

Two major climate drivers. One ocean. One planet.

**UPDATES 🔥**

AUGUST 2026

UN WEATHER AGENCY WARNING

Strong El Niño is intensifying from this month.

What it means for us:
- More heat domes
- Drought + Floods risk
- Wildfires increasing
- Indian Ocean basin affected

"Adding fuel to a planet already on fire" - UN Secretary-General

Nature is shifting.
