PORT CITY COLOMBO REPRESENTED AT THE COMMONWEALTH BUSINESS FORUM 2024

Port City Colombo, a visionary Special Economic Zone dedicated to the export of modern services, was represented at the Commonwealth Business Forum 2024, which took place in Apia, Samoa from 23rd to 24th October 2024. As a strategic partner of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), Port City Colombo was proud to engage in insightful discussions focused on promoting sustainable growth with high-level global business leaders and Heads of Government at the Commonwealth Business Forum, which was held alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Samoa.
Thulci Aluwihare, Deputy Managing Director, CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd, was lead speaker at Roundtable 01: ‘Skills Migration, Regional Collaboration.’ At this exclusive briefing, Aluwihare underscored the challenges that Sri Lanka was undergoing in relation to brain drain, similarly to South Pacific Small Island Nations. He also charged that, to promote skills’ migration, human mobility, and the diffusion of knowledge, Small Island Developing States are required to become essential players in the global value chain, whilst implementing immigration reforms that attract regional talent and expertise. Aluwihare then highlighted Sri Lanka’s ambitious initiative to reverse brain drain and enhance human mobility through the progressive regulatory framework of the Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone. The Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone’s benefits, including earnings in foreign currency, 0% personal income tax, preferential employment visas up to five years, and no restrictions placed on employed expatriates, were the focal point of his remarks.
Aluwihare further participated in Roundtable 07: ‘Building Resilient Infrastructure,’ where he accentuated the integral role that public-private partnerships (PPP) could play in bridging the critical financing gap pertaining to building resilient infrastructure.
These engagements were followed by Port City Colombo’s representation at the Sustainable Markets Initiative with His Majesty King Charles III, which brought together business dignitaries and elected Heads of State from across the Commonwealth realms. The event aimed to showcase how the private sector has been collaborating with governments and multi-lateral organisations in support of global climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
Held under the theme, ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,’ the Commonwealth Business Forum 2024 focused on key themes including access to finance, advancing tech and innovation, reducing barriers to trade, transforming the workforce through skills development, and promoting sustainability and resilience, particularly for the Commonwealth’s Small Island Developing States.

Harvard University Honors Kandeban Balendran with “Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award”

In recognition of his unwavering dedication, service to the community, and remarkable contributions to the betterment of society, his country, and the region through intellectual and social growth, Kandeban Balendran has been awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award—one of the highest honors presented by the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) of Harvard University.
Each year, Harvard celebrates the extraordinary contributions of Alumni Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) and their dedicated volunteer leaders through annual awards at the Alumni Leadership Conference (ALC). The Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award is a prestigious accolade that acknowledges an alumnus from over 120 Harvard Clubs or SIGs globally. It recognizes a volunteer leader among hundreds and thousands of alumni who has gone above and beyond their regular responsibilities to make a significant contribution to their community and create a positive impact on the world.
This award not only celebrates Kandeban’s significant impact within the global Harvard community but also acknowledges his tireless work to transform lives across Sri Lanka and the Asia-Pacific region through intellectual and social growth and community development. His leadership and vision continue to shape the future for generations to come.
Kandeban Balendran has been a staunch advocate for education, community development, and economic empowerment, with a career spanning over 22 years. In 2021, he spearheaded the establishment of the Harvard Club of Sri Lanka as the 119th officially recognized Harvard Club in the world, a remarkable milestone that brought the global network closer to Sri Lanka. As the founding President and Chair of the Board of the Harvard Club of Sri Lanka, Kandeban has led numerous initiatives along with his fellow board members that bridge local and global communities, promoting the values of leadership, excellence, and service.
In 2024, Kandeban co-founded the BIG BOLD BRAVE Harvard APAC Regional Conference, a landmark event held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which gathered participants from over 15 countries for a three-day forum. The conference became a platform for transformative ideas, bold initiatives, and courageous leadership, aimed at fostering collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region—home to half of the world's population.
During the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Kandeban led a critical health initiative— —alongside the board members of the Harvard Club of Sri Lanka. This initiative provided medical supplies worth approximately 50 million rupees to over 15 public hospitals, proving essential in saving lives during a time of national need.
Kandeban’s influence extends into the entrepreneurial and educational realms. As the President and CEO of Miami Ad School Sri Lanka & Maldives, he leads the world's most awarded creative school network, shaping the minds of future innovators. He is also the founder of Mozhi.com, Ivy Future Leader Academy, and EMBRAX Innovations—ventures aimed at empowering the next generation of leaders through education and innovation.
Before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey, Kandeban was a media veteran in Sri Lanka and India, where he served as CEO and Director of subsidiaries of the Capital Maharaja Group. He hosted the globally renowned Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Tamil Language Version) on MTV Sri Lanka, which aired for over five years and 250 episodes, and a prime-time socio-political talk show, contributing to national discourse. He remains the only Sri Lankan to have led a pan-India media network operation.
Balendran has also been a strong advocate for the Tamil language and community. As a key member of the leadership team behind the establishment of the Tamil Chair at Harvard University, he played a significant role in mobilizing the global Tamil diaspora to support this initiative through a $6 million fund. The Tamil Chair’s vision is to preserve and promote the Tamil language and culture, furthering the research and study of one of the world’s oldest classical languages, spoken by over 120 million people globally, at one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world.

Kandeban was featured as the “Dreamer” by Harvard Business School among listed global leaders and has been interviewed several times for the remarkable impact he has made through his work. His efforts in media, entrepreneurship, education, and leadership have gained international recognition. In 2014, Kandeban was named among the "19 Young Global Leaders – Future Chasers of Australia" by the Australian Government, a prestigious accolade highlighting his influence as a young leader shaping the future. He is also a recipient of the Young Achiever Award from Victoria University and the Leadership Award from the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). Kandeban is the first and only Sri Lankan to be appointed to the Advisory Board of the New York Festivals, a globally recognized platform honoring the best in advertising and media.

Sri Lanka-Canada Business Council Concludes Successful Trade & Investment Mission to Canada
The Sri Lanka-Canada Business Council (SLCBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce successfully concluded its nine-member trade and investment mission to Canada, strengthening bilateral ties and exploring trade, investment, and allied opportunities in key sectors. Held from October 14th to 22nd, the mission was led by SLCBC President Priyantha Chandrasekara and included constructive exchanges with Canadian business leaders, government officials, academic institutions, and business chambers.
Before departing for Canada, the delegation held a briefing with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya to discuss the objectives and anticipated impact of the mission, signaling the importance of this initiative at the highest levels of Sri Lanka’s government.
The mission’s flagship event, the Sri Lanka-Canada Business Forum, was held on October 15th and showcased abundant opportunities for collaboration between the two nations. Keynote speaker Kula Sellathurai, President of the Canada Sri Lanka Business Convention (CSBC), the SLCBC's counterpart in Canada, highlighted Sri Lanka's growth potential in emerging sectors. The SLCBC leadership, including President Priyantha Chandrasekara and Vice President Mohammad Hameez, outlined Sri Lanka's strategic advantages in trade and investment, focusing on critical areas such as higher and tertiary education, smart and green agriculture, travel and tourism IT and startups. The forum spotlighted the Colombo Port City project and the Industrial Processing Zone in Kankesanthurai (KKS), presenting compelling investment incentives for Canadian businesses.
Following the forum, CSBC hosted a networking session attended by prominent business leaders and members of the Scarborough Business Association, facilitating discussions on joint ventures and collaborative projects.
The delegation engaged with the Council of Ontario Universities, including its President and CEO, Steve Orsini, to explore educational partnerships, research initiatives, and student mobility opportunities, particularly in STEM fields. Additionally, discussions with the J’pura Canada Alumni Association highlighted a strong demand for enhanced educational exchanges, paving the way for expanded academic collaboration between Canada and Sri Lanka.
In further engagements, the delegation explored agriculture, mineral exports, and educational partnerships with the Can Lanka Business Association.
In Ottawa, Hon. Chandra Arya, Member of Parliament for Nepean West, welcomed the delegation to the Canadian Parliament for discussions on reducing trade barriers and fostering a favorable business climate. The Sri Lanka-Canada Business Council (SLCBC) also met with the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Canada, His Excellency U.L. Mohammed Jauhar, who expressed strong support for these initiatives. The delegation then proceeded to Montreal, where discussions continued with Global Affairs Canada and key Canadian food manufacturers. These meetings focused on expanding Sri Lankan exports, particularly coconut-based products, and creating pathways for Sri Lankan students seeking higher education in Canada, with a shared commitment to boosting bilateral trade flows.
In Vancouver, discussions with the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce and the Surrey Board of Trade centered on collaborative opportunities in Agri-Tech, IT, and tourism, further emphasizing the growth potential of bilateral ventures. The delegation also engaged in discussions with Surrey City Councillor Linda Annis, as well as Jim Bennett, Honorary Consul of British Columbia to Sri Lanka, and members of the Sri Lanka Friendship Association. The meetings highlighted Surrey's extensive business landscape and provided insights into the vibrant Sri Lankan diaspora's role in promoting bilateral ties.
The delegation was honored at the 22nd Anniversary of the Saravana Bhawan Restaurant Chain by owner and philanthropist Mr. Ganaesan Sugumar, who is also head of the CSBC’s counterpart organization in Canada. Mr. Sugumar warmly welcomed the delegation alongside prominent investors, for this anniversary celebration.
The delegation’s visit closed with reaffirmed commitments from both the SLCBC and Canadian partners to foster sustainable economic growth and formalize future collaborative efforts. This mission signifies an exciting new chapter in Sri Lanka-Canada relations, setting a robust foundation for increased trade, investment, and educational exchange initiatives.

Top BTEC Centres in Sri Lanka Honoured at Pearson Higher Education Forum 2024
The Pearson BTEC Higher Education Forum 2024 was held on the 23rd of October 2024 at the Lotus Ballroom, Shangri-La Colombo, where British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, His Excellency Andrew Patrick, was the Chief Guest. Hosted by Pearson UK to honour excellence amongst higher education institutions offering Pearson BTEC qualifications, the annual event is a calendar highlight for Sri Lanka’s higher education sector. The forum brought together top-performing Pearson-approved BTEC centres from across the country, celebrating their commitment to delivering high-quality learning experiences leading to internationally-recognised Pearson BTEC qualifications. The occasion also served as an important opportunity for networking among key leaders in the higher education sector.
The forum witnessed several Pearson-approved BTEC centres being awarded Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze rankings, alongside special awards that acknowledged their outstanding performances throughout 2023. The accolades recognised both academic success and the respective institutions’ unwavering commitment to providing top-tier education. This year’s Pearson BTEC Higher Education Forum was also particularly significant as it coincided with Pearson marking 50 years of dedicated service in Sri Lanka, including over 25 years of offering BTEC qualifications.
His Excellency Andrew Patrick, High Commissioner UK in Sri Lanka addressing the gathering, emphasised the strong relationship between the UK and Sri Lanka in the field of education, “Sri Lanka proudly stands as Pearson’s second-largest international market for BTEC qualifications, reflecting the strong educational ties between our two nations. For over 25 years, more than 100,000 students from over 40 institutions across the Island have benefitted from BTEC’s unique 2+1 model, offering an affordable route to a UK top-up degree. These diverse qualifications, spanning fields from Business and Engineering to Fashion Design and Psychology, are shaping Sri Lanka’s future workforce, equipping graduates with the practical skills needed to excel in today’s global economy. I am pleased to say that, through platforms such as BTEC, the warm friendship between our two countries is helping open doors and create opportunities.”

නේෂන්ස් ට්‍රස්ට් බැංකුව විසින් 2024 වර්ෂය වෙනුවෙන් දියත් කළ “We Transfer More Than Just Money” යන ප්‍රේෂණ වැඩසටහන සාර්ථකව අවසන් වූ අතර, එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස විදේශයන්ගෙන් ලැබෙන විදේශ ප්‍රේෂණ ප්‍රමාණය සැලකිය යුතු ලෙස ඉහළ ගොස් ඇත.
මෙම වැඩසටහනේ එක අදියරක් ලෙස, ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රේෂණ ප්‍රතිලාභකරුවන් අතරින් වාසනාවන්ත ජයග්‍රාහකයින්ට ස්මාර්ට් ජංගම දුරකථන ලබා දීම සඳහා සති 12 ක් පුරා සතිපතා දිනුම් ඇදීමක් පවත්වන ලදී. මෙහිදී තේරී පත් වූ වාසනාවන්ත ජයග්‍රාහකයින් 12 දෙනා ප්‍රේෂණ ලැබුවේ ඇමරිකා එක්සත් ජනපදය, කැනඩාව, යුරෝපය, සෞදි අරාබිය, බහරේනය සහ ජපානය ඇතුළු විවිධ රටවල්වල සිටින ඔවුන්ගේ හිතමිත්‍රාදීන්ගෙනි.

Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) has been operational since 2006-07. Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indian (NRIs) for pursuing Undergraduate courses in Indian Universities and Institutes. SPDC cuts across both professional and non-professional courses.

Only fresh year students are eligible to apply for the scheme. Further details regarding the scheme are available on http://spdcindia.gov.in Eligible students from Sri Lanka are requested to submit their applications directly on the said portal by 30 November 2024.
