Mahasen, one of the most majestic wild tuskers in Sri Lanka, is known for possessing the longest pair of tusks among all living Sri Lankan elephants. A true giant of the wilderness powerful, graceful, and deeply symbolic of the islandโs rich natural heritage. ๐๐
The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is the largest of all Asian elephant subspecies, growing up to 3.5 meters in height and weighing around 5,500 kilograms.
With their dark skin and light speckled patches, these gentle giants consume nearly 150 kilograms of vegetation daily, feeding on grasses, leaves, and fruits. ๐ฟ
They are mainly found across Sri Lankaโs dry zone national parks, including Yala, Udawalawe, Wilpattu, Kala Wewa, and Minneriya. While females live in close family herds, mature males like Mahasen often wander alone, ruling the wild plains in quiet majesty.
However, their survival faces growing threats from habitat loss and humanโelephant conflict, which claims over 300 elephants each year. Conservation programs across Sri Lanka now focus on protecting these magnificent creatures both inside and outside protected parks, preserving a living legacy for generations to come. ๐๏ธ
