The Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) for July 2024 was recorded at 194.7, a decrease of 0.9 index points or 0.44% from June's 195.6.

This drop equates to a reduction in the “Market Basket” expenditure value by Rs. 788.98.

On a Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) basis, inflation rose to 2.4% in July from 1.7% in June.

Specifically, Food Group inflation increased to 1.5% from 1.4%, while Non-Food Group inflation jumped to 2.8% from 1.8%.Month-on-month, Food items saw a slight increase of 0.03%, whereas Non-Food items decreased by 0.47%.

The CCPI is a crucial economic indicator that measures inflation through percentage changes in the cost of a set basket of goods and services.

Sri Lanka has decided to lift a ban on the visit of foreign research ships starting next year, following strong security concerns previously raised by India and the US over frequent docking requests from hi-tech Chinese surveillance vessels. The change in position was conveyed by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry to NHK World Japan.

Sabry stated that Sri Lanka cannot have different rules for different countries and block only China. He added that the country will not take sides in disputes between others. The moratorium on foreign research ships will end in January next year.

Two Chinese spy ships were allowed to dock in Sri Lankan ports within 14 months through November 2023.

The Chinese research ship Shi Yan 6 docked in Colombo port in October 2023 for "geophysical scientific research" in collaboration with Sri Lanka's National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA). The US had expressed concern over this before the ship's arrival.

In August 2022, the Chinese navy vessel Yuan Wang 5 docked at Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka for replenishment.

Sabry also expressed gratitude for Japan's plan to provide a ship equipped with sonar, which will enable Sri Lanka to conduct its own surveys and collect its own data for commercial exploitation.

He emphasized that Sri Lanka has untapped maritime resources and that research must be conducted transparently.

Located at a strategic point in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is an important stop for marine traffic between Southeast Asia and West Asia, forming part of the global trade route.

State Minister of Finance, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, clarified that individuals with a monthly income not exceeding Rs. 100,000 are exempt from paying taxes, despite receiving reminders from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).

To date, approximately 2.3 million people have received TINs, with 1.3 million issued in June alone. The government aims to increase this number to 7.3 million by the end of July.
