We often think of sweetness as a symbol of joy. The comfort of sugar in a cup of tea with a loved one, a piece of chocolate after a demanding day, or a slice of cake at a celebration. However, sweetness has a different meaning for millions of people worldwide; it is entwined with needles, medications, a lifelong fight for balance and quiet restraint

On a quiet autumn evening in 1895, something remarkable happened at the University of Würzburg. Physics professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen was doing his experiments with cathode rays when he noticed an unexpected fluorescent glow on a nearby screen. Curiously, he decided to place his hand between the tube and the screen. He could see the silhouette of his bones! This unexpected occurrence resulted in the discovery of X-rays, one that would revolutionize medical imaging forever. Roentgen went on to be awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics, and his work has led to diagnosing and treating disease in a way that was never before imaginable.

Do we wear masks only for Halloween? No, I am not referring to any tangible covering we use to enclose our buccal cavities or any of our facial muscles. As a part of the Homo sapiens species, most of us tend to create a façade. We put on a fake face while we hide the real ones on a constant daily basis. Life is a costume party where only the best dressed would win or rather, survive.

Close your eyes and imagine this… You are sitting in your favourite spot, surrounded by a cozy atmosphere. In front of you is a warm, steaming bowl of pasta, covered with a rich, tasty sauce that flames up your taste buds, or perhaps topped with a sprinkle of melted cheese.

Regret often arrives uninvited, a silent echo of choices that we thought were buried, reminding us that the past is never truly behind us. However, each person’s interpretation of the world is unique and changes as we progress through life due to new experiences and understandings. Perspectivism teaches us that our understanding is always settled because there is no singular constant reality along with what seemed obvious yesterday may dissolve under tomorrow’s altered perspective. This continuous evolution of viewpoint is the very essence of being alive. We are not static observers but actors who are continually redrawing their inner semantic. It is precisely because our perspectives mature and expand that regret takes hold. What once felt right can later feel like a betrayal of a wiser self.

She comes home, unrested, heart full of the burden she carries just from existing. The pressure of functioning in an ever so shunning social hemisphere. Pressure that can make diamonds crack and willpower fragment into miniscule pieces. She cuts her blue hair (an euphemism for her veins) as many times as she’s been failed by mankind, marking it as tallies each time the weight becomes unbearable. Each mark is a muted cry for help, a silent testimony etched into her skin that no one ever stopped to read.

Every year since 1967, the world has come together to celebrate International Literacy Day on 8 September, which reminds policymakers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy. UNESCO established this day because of the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of personal and societal development.

They say we are made of stardust. And that’s not just poetic fluff, it’s true. Every element in your body heavier than hydrogen and helium was born in the fiery death of ancient stars. When those stars exploded in supernovae, they scattered their ashes across the cosmos, carbon, oxygen, iron, and all the ingredients of life. Eventually, some of that stardust came together in a small solar system around a modest star. And here we are.
