Today is February 4, 2026, and as usual, the national anthem is being played in schools. This day holds special significance as it marks the 78th anniversary of Sri Lanka, which was formerly known as Ceylon, gaining Dominion status from Great Britain.

New year, new me they say but in reality it’s the same old unresolved trauma, the same inability to procure a life partner or just a partner in general or the tale as old as time, the same level of procrastination that is engraved onto your DNA like an inherent disease. Anyhow, new year should be a nod to change thyself spiritually and internally, accepting one’s shortcomings and tweaking those flaws to bloom into something beautiful. It’s not something that should be enforced by any external party rather it is something that should surface from within.

Domestication is one of humanity’s oldest biological experiments, an unintentional but profound process that has reshaped the bodies, behaviors, and genes of numerous animal species. From dogs and cattle to chickens and horses, domesticated animals exhibit a distinctive suite of traits that differentiate them from their wild ancestors. These shared traits, collectively known as Domestication Syndrome, have puzzled scientists for centuries. While Charles Darwin offered early hypotheses, only recently has a compelling, unifying explanation emerged. And it is based on the ever-fascinating stem cell population, the Neural Crest.

University life can be overwhelming in ways we don’t always talk about. Between lectures, deadlines, responsibilities, and expectations, there are moments when it all feels like too much. I’ve had days like that. Days when I felt mentally exhausted and unsure of how to keep going. What made the difference wasn’t advice or solutions, but people who simply listened. Friends who sat with me let me talk and reminded me that I wasn’t alone. That, to me, is solidarity in its truest form.
