Investigations by security experts show that several organisations, originally founded in the United States, have expanded their reach into Australia through online networks and local chapters. Groups such as the “Active Clubs” and the “Proud Boys” – known globally for their far-right ideology and militant organisation – have inspired and connected with Australian movements that are recruiting young men through gyms, combat training, and social media.

While these networks present themselves as community or brotherhood organisations, authorities say their underlying message is anti-immigrant and racially divisive. Analysts have also identified the rise of home-grown outfits in Australia that echo similar rhetoric and tactics, further amplifying tensions.

In recent weeks, protests in Melbourne, Sydney, and other cities have seen extremist banners, symbols, and chants surface, with demonstrators often targeting migrants and people of colour. Some South Asian community leaders – including Indian and Sri Lankan representatives – have voiced fears that their members could increasingly face verbal abuse or intimidation in public spaces.
