පොළොන්නරුව කතිකාවත 📜✨
The strict ancient rules carved in stone! 🪨📜

This is the famous Polonnaruwa Katikawatha (Polonnaruwa Decree) inscribed during the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great (1153–1186 AD).

Back then, the Budhist monk order was divided into three sect, and discipline was fading. Monks were leaving temples as they pleased and fighting among themselves. To protect the Sasana, the Kin, alongside Venerable Maha Kashyapa of Dimbulagala, unified the monks and carved a strict code of conduct (Vinaya) directly into this massive rock for future generations!

Some of these ancient rules are incredibly strict
🔹 Monk had a strict daily routine based on their ordination leve
🔹 They could not whisper or speak in secret to any womannot even their own mother
🔹 They were forbidden from running in the rain
🔹 They were not allowed to show their teeth while smiling

If you visit Polonnaruwa, make sure to read the translation board near this rock Our history is full of amazing, untold stories like this 🌿

පොළොන්නරුවේ තියෙන ලස්සනම බුදු පිළිමය.
Did you know this masterpiece was once completely covered in gold? Carved 15.5 feet deep into solid rock, the Vidyadhara Cave at Gal Viharaya was originally painted and adorned to look exactly like the Tavatimsa Heaven.

During the Kalinga Magha invasion in 1215 AD, our ancestors made the ultimate sacrifice to protect it—they completely buried this entire cave under soil. That brilliant move is the only reason this breathtaking 12th-century artwork survived for us to see today!
