Historic Gold for Sri Lanka: Rumesh Tharanga Conquers Glasgow 2026

Sri Lanka is celebrating a monumental milestone in its sporting history as javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage clinched the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Displaying sensational form, Tharanga launched a gigantic throw of 89.75 meters to secure the top step of the podium, outclassing a stellar international field.

Tharanga’s victory shatters a 76-year-old athletics gold drought for the island nation at the Commonwealth Games. Prior to this historic night, Sri Lanka’s sole athletics gold medal had been won by the legendary Duncan White way back in 1950 in the 400-yard hurdles event in Auckland, New Zealand.
Furthermore, this triumph ends a two-decade wait for a gold medal in any sport for Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games, following weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage's gold-winning feat in Melbourne back in 2006.

Furthermore, this is only the 5th medal in athletics in Sri Lanka's Commonwealth Games history. The other medals were won by Yupun Abeykoon in 2022 (Bronze) in Birmingham. Sriyani Kulawansa in 1998 (Silver) and Sugath Thilakaratne in 1998 (Bronze)
