AIPS Urges FIFA to Address US Visa Issues Facing Accredited Journalists Ahead of World Cup 2026

LAUSANNE – The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has called on FIFA to urgently intervene after several accredited journalists encountered visa difficulties ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In a letter sent on June 5, AIPS President Gianni Merlo urged FIFA to work with the relevant authorities to ensure accredited media personnel can enter the United States without unnecessary restrictions.

According to AIPS, journalists from countries including Iran and several African nations have faced visa delays, while some have received only single-entry visas, complicating travel between the tournament’s three host nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

AIPS warned that the situation threatens media freedom, disrupts international coverage, and has already caused financial losses for journalists unable to use pre-booked travel arrangements.

The association emphasized that unrestricted access for accredited journalists is essential to ensuring comprehensive global coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Registration of Three National Sports Associations Temporarily Suspended; Competent Authority Appointed

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, has issued an Extraordinary Gazette notification temporarily suspending the registrations of the Sri Lanka Handball Association, Sri Lanka Carrom Federation, and Sri Lanka Hockey Federation, while transferring the administration of these bodies to the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Accordingly, the decision has been made by the Minister in the exercise of the powers vested in him under Sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law, No. 25 of 1973 (as amended). The relevant Extraordinary Gazette Notification (No. 2489/48) has been officially published.

National Sports Associations Affected

The following national sports associations have had their registrations temporarily suspended:

Sri Lanka Handball Association
Sri Lanka Carrom Federation
Sri Lanka Hockey Federation
Appointment of a Competent Authority

To ensure the proper governance, administration, and uninterrupted functioning of these organizations, the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has been appointed as the Competent Authority with effect from 19 May 2026.

Reasons for the Decision

According to the Gazette notification, the primary reasons for this intervention are:

To facilitate the completion of the process of amending the constitutions of the respective sports associations; and
To ensure that the election of new office bearers is conducted in a transparent, fair, and accountable manner.
Powers Vested in the Competent Authority

Until Annual General Meetings are convened under the revised constitutions and new office bearers are duly elected, the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports shall exercise full authority over the management, administration, and all operational affairs of the respective associations.

The Extraordinary Gazette notification formalizing these measures was issued under the signature of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, and is dated 19 May 2026.

🏅 Sri Lanka’s U20 Athletics Heroes Receive Grand Welcome Home!

Sri Lanka’s Youth Athletics Team returned home to a warm reception after an outstanding campaign at the 2026 Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong. ✈️👏

🥇🥇🥈🥈🥉🥉🥉🥉 The team won 8 medals – 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze – while finishing 8th overall among Asia’s top nations.

🌟 Gold medalists Tarushi Abhisheka (1500m) and Ransini Perera (200m) led the way, with several other young stars also reaching the podium.

🤝 The athletes were officially welcomed at Bandaranaike International Airport by representatives of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sri Lanka Athletics officials, and proud family members.
