I don’t usually waste energy on negativity, but I felt the need to speak up this time. The reason I shared that screenshot is because this isn’t just about me, it’s about all of us. I was informed that it was not only me, this individual has been going around messaging almost every DJ in Sri Lanka, insulting and belittling them, simply because he has one weekly residency. That is not how a healthy industry grows. I’ve worked hard to earn my place, and I will continue to grow through passion, consistency, and love for music, not by dragging others down. There is space in this industry for everyone. it thrives when different talents, different sounds, and different energies come together. So why try to trample the people around us, instead of uplifting one another?
Back in 2009, our rave culture was something magical. Everyone supported everyone. It felt like one big family where DJs, artists, and ravers all stood shoulder to shoulder, celebrating music and community. That unity was the heartbeat of the scene, and it’s what made Sri Lanka’s underground so unique. It’s heartbreaking to see how far we’ve drifted from that spirit. today it feels like people project their insecurities as hate, instead of turning that energy into creativity and love. We don’t have to be like this. We can choose to bring that family back.
And let’s be honest, when a Sri Lankan woman tries to step into this industry, suddenly it becomes a problem. We’re judged, told we “belong in the kitchen,” while the same people celebrate someone with lighter skin as if she were a goddess. That double standard is unfair, and it needs to be said out loud. I am not here to compete with anyone or take anyone’s place. I am here to create, to share, and to represent women from our own soil who dare to dream. It is not right to insult or put down any DJ who is working hard to follow their passion, because each of us carries a unique journey. If that bothers some people, so be it! but it will never stop me from doing what I love and supporting others along the way.
You can try to silence a woman, but you can’t silence her rhythm. And the truth is, this rhythm has space for all of us. if only we choose to dance together instead of stepping on each other. 🙏🏽✊🏽❤️
