Sri Lanka’s fuel crisis is more than a temporary shortage. It exposes a deeper structural challenge in how the country powers its economy. Heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels leaves businesses, industries, and households vulnerable to global oil price fluctuations and supply disruptions.

Yet the same crisis also highlights an opportunity. With abundant sunlight, strong coastal winds, and existing hydropower infrastructure, Sri Lanka has the natural potential to accelerate its transition toward renewable energy. Moving in that direction could reduce dependence on imported fuel, strengthen energy security, and create new economic opportunities.

The real question is no longer whether Sri Lanka should transition to renewable energy, but how quickly it can make that shift.

What do you think is the most realistic energy solution for Sri Lanka’s future?
