China has developed a new bamboo-based plastic that is as strong as petroleum plastics while being fully biodegradable. According to researchers at Northeast Forestry University, this innovative bioplastic matches the strength of petroleum-derived plastics but breaks down completely in soil within just 50 days.
According to Interesting Engineering, the bamboo plastic is made from cellulose extracted from bamboo fibers, giving it both durability and environmental friendliness. It’s strong enough to be used in products like automotive interiors and home appliances, yet it decomposes naturally without leaving harmful residues.
This breakthrough has been described as a major step toward reducing global plastic pollution, combining strength with sustainability in a way that could reshape how everyday products are made.
