Human Analogue Space Missions with CHASM

Guest Speaker : Dr. Eleonore Poli [Post Doc Fellow Position at Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique ] Switzerland. | Research Member of Eco Astronomy Inc.

Eleonore Poli earned her PhD in Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge and now works as a postdoctoral researcher at CSEM in Neuchâtel, focusing on additive manufacturing. Her work includes developing 3D-printed metal structures for projects with the European Space Agency, such as shock absorbers for lunar landers. With a strong background in mechanical engineering, she has experience in both academia and industry, including at Pilatus Aircraft. A passionate space explorer, Eleonore serves as an analogue astronaut and led the Asclepios mission I crew – an eight-day Moon simulation in lunar-like caves. She co-founded CHASM, a global network for analogue space missions, and is a TEDx speaker and Ironman triathlete. As a long-time member of the Swiss Space Museum, she blends science, storytelling, and space history to inspire audiences of all ages. At FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con, Eleonore Poli will explore how 3D printing is transforming space exploration. From rocket engines to satellite parts, this powerful technology is revolutionizing how we design for space – making it possible even for garage-based innovators to take part in the next space age.

MATERIAL SAMPLES FOR EMIRATES LUNAR MISSION AND SPACE INDUSTRY

Guest Speaker : Dr. Laura Borella [Work Package manager at SES for European Space Agency Academy Experiments programme]

Dr. Laura Borella is an accomplished young scientist and one of the few individuals worldwide to have experienced zero gravity. She holds a Master’s degree from the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) and has contributed her expertise to the German Aerospace Agency (DLR) for over a year. During her tenure at DLR, she worked in the Systems Engineering Department, supporting critical missions such as the Martian Moon eXploration (MMX) and the Reusability Flight Experiment (ReFEx). Dr. Borella led a feasibility study for a gravimeter—now under review for patent qualification—and played an active role in the MMX rover’s mock-up structural testing at the Landing and Mobility Test Facility (LAMA), as well as the Flight Termination System (FTS) for ReFEx. She later earned her Ph.D. at the Microgravity Research Center in Brussels, where she participated in two parabolic flight campaigns. Her doctoral research focused on developing insulating materials using In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) for lunar applications, with the goal of creating thermal protection shields for rovers. Currently, Dr. Borella serves as the workpackage manager at SES for the European Space Agency. Since 2020, she has also been an active member of Eco Astronomy Inc, an international network dedicated to education and public outreach in astronomy and space science.

THE CHALLENGE OF MARS SAMPLE RETURN

Guest Speaker : Prof. Jonathan Clarke, [CEO at Mars Society Australia
Former Senior Lecturer at Research School of Earth Sciences , Australian National University.]

Pof. Jonathan Clarke completed a BSc Honours degree in geology from the University of Tasmania in 1981 and a PhD from Flinders University in Adelaide in 1988. He spent 13 years in the resource exploration industry, working in field-based coal, oil, groundwater, trona, copper-lead-zinc, gold, diamonds, and copper-gold exploration projects across Australia, Chile, and the Philippines. He has been engaged in geosciences education programs at the University of Tasmania, Flinders and Latrobe Universities, and at the Australian National University. Jonathan spent 14 years working for Geoscience Australia in the marine survey, salinity, groundwater, and pre-competitive mineral exploration fields.Jon has had a life-long interest in space exploration and planetary science. In 2001 he joined Mars Society Australia, becoming president in 2012, a position he has held to the present. Jon has taken part in six Mars analogue expeditions in Australia and one each to Ladakh (India) and New Zealand. He has also participated in three rotations at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, two of two weeks and one of four weeks duration; and in the Mars 160 expedition which spent three months at MDRS and one month on Devon Island at the Flashline Arctic Research Station in the Canadian Arctic. Jonathan has been an associate of the Australian Centre for Astrobiology since 2004, an online instructor in astrobiology at Swinburne University (2017-2020), and an adjunct faculty member at the Amity Centre of Excellence in Astrobiology (ACoEA) since 2020. He currently works on Mars EVA suits for Human Aerospace Pty. Ltd. Jon has contributed to more than 100 peer reviewed publications in geosciences, analogue research, and astrobiology. Outside his professional career Jon has been a keen hiker and camper, off road driver, recreational and research scuba diver, and is volunteer firefighter with the Guises Creek Brigade in the Australian Capital Territory Rural Fire Service.
