Why The World’s Largest City is Being Abandoned
Most people are surprised when they hear what the biggest city on Earth actually is. It’s not Tokyo, New York, or a megacity in China, but a place rarely talked about outside Southeast Asia: Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. After decades of explosive growth, the city is now facing severe congestion, pollution, flooding, and even sinking land beneath it. So much so that the government is preparing to move the country’s capital somewhere else entirely. In this video, we explore how it got here, and what its future could look like as Indonesia is looking to abandon the city.
