01/03/2023

Ceylon Orange Pekoe is a popular term in the black tea trade. It doesnโ€™t refer to an orange-flavored tea, or even a tea that brews up an orange copper color. This is used by tea manufacturers to identify between the best black tea and more economical options. It refers to a grading system in which tea leaves are separated by leaf size. This is the highest and main grade of black tea brewed from the dried leaves and buds of the Camellia sinensis plant.

So, where did this title come from?

To begin with, letโ€™s take a look at the origin of โ€œpekoeโ€. In the tea industry, people used the term โ€œwhite downโ€ to describe young leaf shoots that contain fine, white hairs.

Since tea originated in China, white down was referred to either as โ€œbaak-hoโ€, โ€œbiak-houโ€, or โ€œpak-hauโ€, depending on the port.
This was eventually Romanized to pekoe.

Then, what about oranges?

Well, many assume that orange refers to the Orange-Nassau monarch family of the Netherlands.
The Dutch were one of the most prominent tea importers in the 18th century.
So, when a labeling system for tea was introduced, the Dutch put their own signature label on the tea.

Orange Pekoe comes as a whole leaves and buds of the younger variety. which is wiry, long and thin in character. Although some tea drinkers assume that orange pekoe is a distinctive variety of tea, it is actually a term applied to the largest leaf grade for black teas from Sri Lanka and southern India, the sources of most of the worldโ€™s orange pekoe tea.
Orange Pekoe tea can differ in flavor depending on where it is grown and how it is processed.
Furthermore, brewing techniques can also play a role in the resulting cup of tea.
Our Ceylon Orange Pekoe tea has a strong scent and a smooth flavor with a naturally sweet finish.

Orange Pekoe may have the following advantages:

๐ŸƒHas antioxidant properties to boost overall health

๐ŸƒMay improve heart health

๐ŸƒHas potential to lower blood pressure

๐ŸƒMay lower bad cholesterol

๐ŸƒCould reduce risk of stroke

๐ŸƒMay boost digestive system health

๐ŸƒCould lower blood sugar levels

๐ŸƒMay lower risk of cancer

Orange Pekoe tea is brewed in the same manner as all black teas.

Many find this grade to have its own, natural sweetness. Due to this, it can be drunk without any additions. Although, some people do prefer to add a squeeze of lemon. It is also possible to drink the black tea by adding milk and/or sugar to it.

Ceylon Cardamom

Popularly known as the โ€˜Queen of Spicesโ€™ as opposed to Black Pepper hailed as the โ€˜King of Spiceโ€™, Cardamom, sometimes spelled as cardamon or cardamom, is a spice made from the seeds of several plants in the genera Elettaria and Amomum in the family Zingiberaceae. Both genera are native to the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia. The cardamom plant is a perennial herbaceous plant with a pseudostem and thick irregularly shaped rhizomes. Dried fruit or cardamom pod is traded as a spice.

Cardamom pods are spindle-shaped and have a triangular cross-section. The pods contain several seeds, which are small and black, while the pods differ in color and size by species. Cardamom is generally available in the form of whole fruit as a primary product, in-ground form as secondary processed products, and extractions of oil and oleoresin as value-added products. Cardamom lands are generally termed spice forests. Sri Lankan Cardamom suppliers export the light green cardamom variety (Elettaria cardamom), which is one of the most expensive spices by weight.

Due to the unique flavor of green cardamom cultivated in Sri Lanka, formed by the countryโ€™s unique terroir, green cardamom produced in Sri Lanka is known as Ceylon Cardamom.

In Sri Lanka, cardamom is mainly cultivated in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, and a part of Galle. Three types of Cardamom are found in Sri Lanka and theyโ€™re categorized based on the shape of the inflorescence.

Benefits of the Coconut tree

As we know very well every part of the coconut tree has taken to our day-to-day life usage in various ways.
โ€ข Trunk โ€“the source of timber for building houses, and is increasingly being used as a replacement for endangered hardwoods in the furniture construction industry.
โ€ข Leaves - The leaves have hard veins in their centers which, in many parts of the world, are used as brushes after the green part of the leaf has been stripped away.
โ€ข Coconut flowers - tightly clustered together among the leaves at the top of the trunk. The flower stems may be tapped for their sap to produce a drink, and the sap can also be reduced by boiling to produce a type of sugar used for cooking.
โ€ข Fruits
๏ƒ˜ The thick fibrous layer produces coconut fiber, โ€˜coirโ€™, which has numerous uses and is particularly important in manufacturing ropes.
๏ƒ˜ Coconut shell is used to make charcoal, which is widely used in various industries as well as in the home as a cooking fuel. When broken in half, the shells are also used as bowls. Nowadays coconut shells tend to make culinary sets, handcrafts, etc.
๏ƒ˜ Coconut water- is enjoyed as a drink, but also provides the hormones which encourage other plants to grow more rapidly and produce higher yields. As the fruit matures, the coconut water gradually solidifies to form the brilliant white, fat-rich, edible flesh or meat.
๏ƒ˜ Dried coconut flesh - โ€˜copraโ€™, is made into coconut oil and coconut milk, which are widely used in cooking in different parts of the world, as well as in cosmetics. A derivative of coconut fat, glycerin, acquired strategic importance in a quite different sphere.

History of the Ceylon Coconut Cultivation

The coconut palm tree referred to in some cultures as โ€œThe all giving tree (Kapruka),โ€ has been in cultivation for millennia.

And throughout this long history, cultivators of coconut palms have made full use of their resources. This includes consuming and selling its fruit and processing the fibers surrounding the coconuts, otherwise known as coco coir, to use to make an assortment of functional products from this โ€œgolden fiber.โ€

Coconut has a long history. It runs until the ancient time 3rd century B.C. in the Ramayana time. For hundreds of decades, coconut had been a harvest monopoly for Asian countries. On the other hand, Europeans and Americans are unbeknown and excited about the special nut coming from far away in a tropical country. The Roman businessman, who traveled around the world named Marco Polo (late 13th century) has been mentioned in his travel notes, this multi-purpose palm tree. Not only that Sir John Mandeville also discloses this nut and tree by elaborating โ€œGreat nut of Indiaโ€.

We cannot find any evidence in the same time from West Africa, the Caribbean, or any other coast of America of the origin of the coconut, until the voyages of the great sailors Vasco da Gama and Columbus in the time of late 15th and early 16th centuries. Arab traders and European sailors had been carried out to the rest of the planet.

In the 1st ten decades, a Greek mariner revealed many useful things by explaining how they use coco fibers in East African village were used as a material which had been taken for sewing together boards when building up boats as well as buildings, weapons, and tools.

As a tropical country, Sri Lanka was previously known as Ceylon. When we study the history and distribution of the coconut tree in Sri Lanka, itโ€™s playing a key role from king Rawanaโ€™s era to 5000 years back until Ramayanaya. There is much literal and written evidence that more kings and foreign invaders controlled early Sri Lanka from time to time and, they had been used to use the coconut nut and coconut-related products on different occasions as well as had taken steps to promote the coconut trees cultivation. Not only that, there is more written evidence about this subject such as

โ€ข Sidat Magazine was written during the Kingdom of Dambadeniya period by Alagiyawanna Mukaweti and this was the first grammar book written in the Sinhalese language. In Sidath magazine, the coconut has been referred to as Nyli.
โ€ข In the Sigiri mirror wall written in the 9th century has been revel the ladies' breasts of the Sigiri damsels referred to as Neli.
โ€ข The Mahawansa, one of the great book have been written about history of Sri Lanka, states that the coconut was cultivated during the reign of King Aggabodhi (564-598) as an industry.
โ€ข Faxian Buddhist monk (337-422) in his travel noted records the presence of coconut in Sri Lanka.
โ€ข The Kingdom of Kotte period (1412โ€“1597) of the 15th century under King Parakramabahu VI (1410โ€“1467) is considered the golden era of Sinhala literature. The Paravi Sandesaya, the Selalihini Sandesaya, the Hansa Sandaseya, and the Gira Sandesaya makes reference to the coconut.
โ€ข in the 1730s when Governor Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff, who represented the Dutch East India Company sought to improve the nationโ€™s agricultural output. He set out to increase the sales of the Dutch East India Company and thus promoted coconut plantations. One of his initiatives included giving out the land between Colombo and Kalutara to those who were interested in planting coconut trees.
