Radio Ceylon: The Voice That Echoed Across Asia. 📻

Long before television or the internet connected the world, radio was the heartbeat of communication. In Asia, that heartbeat began in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka.

The Birth of a Legend.
In 1923, just a year after the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) started its test broadcasts in the United Kingdom, Ceylon made history by launching its own radio broadcasts from Colombo. This made it one of the oldest radio stations in the world and the first in Asia.

What began as a small experiment by British engineers of the colonial government soon grew into a powerful medium of communication and culture. In 1949, it officially became known as Radio Ceylon, marking the beginning of an era that would change broadcasting history.

The Golden Voice of South Asia.
From the 1950s to the 1970s, Radio Ceylon became the most popular and powerful radio station in South Asia. Its clear shortwave signals reached millions of listeners in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), and even parts of the Middle East and Africa.

People tuned in daily to hear their favorite shows—English classics, Sinhala melodies, Hindi film hits, and international news updates—all coming from the heart of Colombo.

The Programs That Made History.
Radio Ceylon’s success relied on its unforgettable shows. Programs like:

“Binaca Geetmala” – Hosted by the legendary Ameen Sayani, it became the most loved Hindi music countdown in South Asia.

“The Melody Hour,” “The Request Show,” and “Sports Round-Up” entertained audiences for hours.

“News in English, Sinhala, Tamil, and Hindi” provided reliable information across borders.

It wasn’t just entertainment; it was emotion, connection, and trust. Families gathered around their radios every evening to listen, laugh, and learn together.

The Voices Behind the Magic.
Radio Ceylon produced some of Asia’s most respected broadcasters. Among them were:

Vernon Corea, a pioneering announcer whose deep voice became instantly recognizable.

Livy Wijemanne, Greg Roskowski, and Kumar de Silva, who brought style and charm to the airwaves.

And of course, Ameen Sayani, whose Hindi programs from Colombo shaped the music culture of an entire generation.

The Transformation into SLBC.
After Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972, Radio Ceylon was renamed the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). It continued its mission of education, news, and entertainment, now focusing more on local languages and culture while still holding on to its proud international heritage.

Even today, SLBC carries the legacy of Radio Ceylon as the oldest radio broadcaster in Asia and one of the longest-running in the world.

A Timeless Symbol of Connection.
From a small studio in Colombo to millions of hearts across the continent, Radio Ceylon wasn’t just a radio station; it was a symbol of unity, music, and human connection.

Its golden era reminds us that technology may change, but the power of a voice can still reach across oceans and generations.

The Unique Story of Sri Lankan Tea, The World’s Finest Ceylon Brew.🌿 🇱🇰

Sri Lanka, a small tropical island formerly known as Ceylon, has a strong reputation in the tea world. From the misty mountains of Nuwara Eliya to the golden plains of Ruhuna, every leaf shares a story of heritage, skill, and flavor that has won the hearts of tea lovers worldwide.

The Origin, From Coffee Failure to Tea Triumph

The tale of Sri Lankan tea begins in the 19th century. During British colonial rule, coffee was the island’s primary plantation crop. However, in the 1860s, a harmful fungus called coffee leaf rust wiped out nearly all the coffee plantations. When despair settled over the land, a Scottish planter named James Taylor introduced tea planting in 1867 at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. His small experiment of just 19 acres became the foundation for a global legacy.

By the late 1800s, Sri Lanka had become the world’s leading tea exporter, a title it proudly retains today.

The Art of Tea, From Leaf to Cup

Ceylon tea is carefully handpicked, usually consisting of the two tender leaves and a bud from the top of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). After harvesting, the leaves undergo several stages:

1. Withering – The leaves are spread out to dry and lose moisture.

2. Rolling – This step releases natural juices and enzymes, which are essential for flavor.

3. Fermentation (Oxidation) – The leaves react with air, developing aroma and color.

4. Drying (Firing) – Heat is applied to stop fermentation and preserve flavor.

5. Grading – Finally, teas are sorted by leaf size and quality.

This detailed process gives each type its unique character, ranging from brisk and bright to smooth and mellow.

Main Tea Growing Regions & Their Unique Flavors

Sri Lanka’s tea regions produce varied flavors due to the island’s different climates and elevations:

1. Nuwara Eliya – The Champagne of Ceylon Teas

Grown at over 6,000 feet above sea level. The tea is light, floral, and aromatic, making it perfect for afternoon tea.

2. Uva

High-elevation teas with a unique menthol-like taste and fragrant aroma. They are especially popular in Europe and Japan.

3. Dimbula

Balanced and mellow teas with a golden color. They are ideal for blending and loved by black tea enthusiasts.

4. Kandy

Medium-grown teas known for their full body and strong flavor. They are often used in classic breakfast teas.

5. Ruhuna (Southern Sri Lanka)

Low-grown teas that produce dark liquor with a bold, rich taste. They are popular in Middle Eastern markets.

6. Sabaragamuwa

Smooth, thick, and slightly sweet teas recognized for their deep color and caramel-like aroma.

Types of Sri Lankan Tea

Sri Lanka produces all three main types of tea, each with its own charm:

1. Black Tea – The most recognized Ceylon tea; it is fully oxidized and has a strong taste.

2. Green Tea – Less processed, lighter in flavor, and rich in antioxidants.

3. White Tea (Silver Tips) – The rarest and most expensive; made from unopened buds with a delicate, silky flavor.

Special Varieties & Innovations

Ceylon Silver Tips – Hand-plucked young buds, valued for their smooth, sweet taste.

Ceylon Golden Tips – Golden-hued buds with a honey-like aroma.

Flavored Teas – Blends infused with cinnamon, cardamom, mint, or jasmine.

Organic Teas – Grown without chemicals and gaining popularity worldwide.

Global Reputation, The Pride of the Island

Ceylon tea is more than just a drink; it symbolizes Sri Lankan pride. Every pack featuring the Lion Logo guarantees it is 100% pure Ceylon tea, grown and packed in Sri Lanka.

The country exports over 250 million kilograms of tea each year to more than 100 countries, making it one of the leading tea exporters in the world.

The Cultural Touch

In Sri Lanka, tea is not just a business; it is a way of life. Whether it’s a morning “kanda” with milk tea or a relaxing evening cup on the veranda, tea connects families, friends, and generations. From hill country estates to seaside villages, the aroma of brewing tea is part of daily life—comforting, familiar, and timeless.

Final Sip, A Legacy in Every Cup

More than 150 years after James Taylor’s first plantation, Ceylon Tea continues to rank among the finest in the world. It embodies a perfect mix of nature, heritage, and human touch. Every sip reflects the spirit of Sri Lanka’s misty hills and the commitment of thousands who make it possible.

🌿 The Magical Bloom of the Horton Plains Nelu Flower — 2025 🌸

After seven long years of silence, the misty hills of Horton Plains National Park have come alive with a breathtaking sight: the Nelu Flower (Strobilanthes).

This rare botanical wonder blooms only once every 7 to 12 years, and 2025 marks its long-awaited return. The usually quiet plains now shine in shades of violet, blue, and pink as millions of Nelu flowers bloom together, transforming the landscape into a living painting.

The Nelu plant spends years hidden in the highland soil, waiting patiently for the right moment to awaken. When it finally blooms, it does so in harmony, with an entire generation of plants flowering at once. This symbolizes renewal, unity, and the timeless rhythm of nature.

The last bloom was seen in 2018, and now in 2025, Horton Plains celebrates this natural festival of color and life once more. The blooming meadows attract butterflies, bees, and travelers from across the globe. Each person is captivated by a beauty that appears only once a decade.

If you ever needed a reminder that nature rewards patience, look to Horton Plains this year. The Nelu flowers are blooming, and their story reminds us that even in silence, life is always preparing to blossom again.
