🇱🇰 Sri Lanka Sets New Record for October Tourist Arrivals — 165,193 Visitors, Total Hits 1.89 Million in 2025

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues its remarkable recovery, recording 165,193 tourist arrivals in October 2025, marking the highest October figure since 2018.

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), this represents a 21.5% year-on-year increase, underscoring the island’s growing appeal as a top travel destination in Asia.

With 1.89 million total visitors recorded in the first ten months of 2025, the country is on track to surpass the 2 million mark by year-end — a significant milestone reflecting strong post-pandemic momentum.

Tourism authorities credit the growth to enhanced global marketing efforts, improved connectivity, and the entry of new airlines expanding routes to Colombo. Industry experts note that upcoming winter season bookings also indicate continued robust demand, positioning 2025 as one of Sri Lanka’s strongest tourism years in recent memory.

Saudi National Given Suspended Sentence for Assaulting SriLankan Airlines Flight Attendant

A Saudi national accused of assaulting and injuring a flight attendant aboard a SriLankan Airlines flight has been sentenced to three months in prison, though the sentence was suspended for five years by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (Nov 3).

The suspect pleaded guilty to charges filed by the Airport Police, which included assault causing injury and intimidation. Along with the prison term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000.

According to the Airport Police, the incident occurred on October 26 aboard a SriLankan Airlines flight from Riyadh to Katunayake. Investigations revealed that the assault took place after the flight attendant instructed passengers to fasten their seatbelts in preparation for landing. The suspect allegedly ignored the directive, engaged in a verbal confrontation, and then physically assaulted the crew member.

Four International Airlines Resume Direct Flights to Sri Lanka

Four international carriers have launched or resumed direct air services to Sri Lanka after receiving Foreign Air Operator Certificates (FAOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL).

Belavia Airlines (Belarus) began inaugural flights from Minsk

Kuwait Airways, Edelweiss (Switzerland), and Red Wings Airlines (Russia) resumed scheduled operations

These airlines now serve Bandaranaike International Airport and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, enhancing Sri Lanka’s global connectivity. The certification process, led by Capt. Daminda Rambukwella, involved rigorous evaluation of each airline’s operations and personnel.

This move is expected to significantly boost Sri Lanka’s tourism sector and strengthen its international aviation network.

CAASL Calls for Applications to Fill Key Staff Vacancies

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has announced new staff vacancies as part of its efforts to strengthen regulatory and operational oversight in the country’s aviation sector.

In a statement, the Authority said it is seeking energetic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated professionals with strong qualifications and extensive experience in the field of civil aviation to fill several key positions.

The CAASL plays a crucial role in ensuring that Sri Lanka’s civil aviation operations remain safe, secure, efficient, regular, and environmentally sustainable. Operating under a well-established regulatory framework, the Authority aligns its oversight and enforcement mechanisms with both national legislative requirements and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

According to the announcement, the recruitment drive is aimed at enhancing the Authority’s technical and regulatory capabilities as Sri Lanka continues to recover and expand its aviation activities.

New Japanese Contractor for BIA Terminal 2 Project Expected by December

Two Japanese firms have submitted bids to complete the remaining works of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Terminal 2 project, with the technical evaluation now underway ahead of the financial review.

Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku said the Government aims to appoint a new Japanese contractor by December, as required under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funding terms.

He noted that cost escalations mean the original JICA loan will be insufficient, and the Government will seek additional financing once the financial bids are opened and the funding gap is determined.

Meanwhile, protective works carried out by Access Engineering to safeguard completed sections of the project have been finalized.

The BIA Terminal 2 project — part of the BIA Development Project Phase II Stage 2 — is intended to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from six million to 16 million. Construction was halted in 2022 amid Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.

Saudia Airlines Revolutionizes In-Flight Connectivity

Saudia Airlines is setting a new standard for in-flight internet by testing high-speed Wi-Fi capable of reaching up to 300 Mbps, with future speeds expected to soar to 800 Mbps. This breakthrough will enable passengers to enjoy live streaming, virtual meetings, and seamless browsing while in the air.

Currently available on about 20 aircraft, the initiative is a key part of Saudi Arabia’s broader digital transformation in aviation. Saudia plans to extend free high-speed internet access across its entire fleet in the near future, redefining the passenger experience and positioning the airline as a global leader in connected travel.
