✅Another Session of Senate Awards held on the 23rd of October 2025✅

Another session of presenting Senate Awards and Cash Prizes to appreciate the researchers at the University of Kelaniya was held on the 23rd of October 2025 at the Senate Room of the university.
Researchers whose papers were published in internationally recognized journals, were appreciated and the Senate Awards and Cash Prizes were awarded to the researchers by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Moreover, the deans of the faculties, heads of the departments, and members of the Senate graced the event.
Senior Prof. Madawa Chandratilake from the Department of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine; Prof. H. A. K. N. S. Surangi from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; and Mr. Buddhika Wickramasingha from the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, Faculty of Science, received Senate Honours and Cash Prizes for having their research published in a Scopus Q1-ranked journal and listed among the Top 10%.
Prof. Jeewantha Premaratne and Dr. A. G. M. J. Gunaratna from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science; and Ms. Gimanthi Sathsara Malalage from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, received Senate Honours and Cash Prizes for having their research published in a Scopus Q1-ranked journal.
Senior Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage from the Department of Chemistry and Prof. B. T. S. D. P. Kannangara from the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science; and Dr. Wasanthi Subasinghe from the Department of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry and Mr. Buddhika Wickramasingha from the Centre for Sustainability, Faculty of Medicine, received Senate Honours and Cash Prizes for having their research published in a Scopus Q2-ranked journal.
Prof. G. P. G. M. D. Hapugoda from the Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine; and Prof. R. M. C. S. Ratnayake, Prof. Mangala Yatawara, and Prof. Dinushani Anupama Daranagama from the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology, Prof. Udaya Priyantha Kankanamge Epa from the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, Prof. Dinesh R. Pandithavidana from the Department of Chemistry, Dr. D. M. P. V. Dissanayaka from the Department of Statistics and Computer Science, and Ms. Hiruni Eranga Wijesooriya from the Department of Physics and Electronics, Faculty of Science, were recognized with Senate Honours and cash prizes for their research published in Scopus Q3- and Q4-ranked journals.
Dr. Rasika Rajapaksha from the Department of Computer Systems Engineering, Faculty of Computing and Technology; and Ms. Samasthuwa Wasam Isuri Udara and Mr. Dhuveeshan Muthusamy from the Department of Marketing Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, received Senate Honours for Scopus-Indexed Conference Full Papers.

✅Celebrating the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2025✅

The celebration of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2025, organized by the University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on October 17, 2025, at the K2-003 Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, under the patronage of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.
Hosted by the University of Kelaniya, this was the first-ever celebration of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Sri Lanka, held with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, and the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO.
Dr. B. D. Nandadeva, a member of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Evaluation Body of UNESCO and a retired professor of the University of Kelaniya, delivered the guest lecture at the event. Ms. Dhammika Wijesinghe, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, and Senior Professor Prabhath Jayasinghe, Secretary General, Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO, who graced the occasion as distinguished guests, also addressed the gathering.
In addition, research papers were presented by Senior Lecturer Ven. Udawela Rewatha Thero, Head of the Department of Sanskrit and Eastern Studies, on “The Richness and Significance of the Intangible Fundamentals Found in Vāstuśāstra and Astrology”; Senior Professor Swarna Ihalagama, Head of the Department of Sinhala, on “Impact of Climate Change on Rush and Reed Weaving Heritage: The Case of the Cultural City of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka”; and Senior Lecturer Umanga Rammungoda, Head of the Department of Archaeology, on “Heritage in Transition: The Future of Intangible Cultural Practices in Villages around Sigiriya.”
Key highlights of the event included the launch of the draft “University of Kelaniya Policy on Engagement in Safeguarding Sri Lanka’s Intangible Cultural Heritage”, and the screening of the documentary film “The Kandyan Dancer: Exploration of Masculinity,” directed by Senior Lecturer Dulanga Gunarathna of the Department of Fine Arts.
The event was also graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Dr. C. C. ✅ICAPS 2025 Successfully Held at the University of Kelaniya✅

The official inauguration ceremony of the 6th International Conference on Applied and Pure Sciences (ICAPS 2025), organised by the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, was held on the 10th of October 2025, at the A8 Auditorium of the Faculty of Science.
The ICAPS 2025 conference was a cornerstone for researchers in Biological Sciences, Software Intensive Systems, Physical Sciences, and Multidisciplinary research. It attracted nearly 300 abstract and full-paper submissions, drawing academics and industry experts from local and international spheres. With the theme, "Expanding Horizons: Integrating Pure and Applied Sciences for Global Impact," ICAPS 2025 provided a global platform for showcasing the latest advancements while contributing to achieving sustainable development goals.
Dean of the Faculty of Science, Senior Professor Sudath R. D. Kalingamudali, delivered the welcome address. Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the inaugural ceremony as the Chief Guest. The chief guest addressed the gathering and officially launched the e-proceedings of ICAPS 2025. The keynote address was given remotely by Dr. Janak R. Wedagedara, Senior Pharmacometrician, UK, whose presentation was "From Particle Size to Patient Exposure: Integrating Fundamental Sciences with Model-Informed Drug Development". The Guest of Honor, Professor E. M. P. Ekanayake, Chair Professor in Mathematics from Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, delivered a captivating talk titled "Steadfast Effort and Perseverance Matters in Success". Furthermore, Guest Speaker, Dr. Leonie Vaas, General Manager of Group Sustainability at Hirdaramani Apparel, delivered a talk titled “Weaving the Future: Building Innovation and Impact Through Academic–Industry Collaboration.” Additionally, Prof. M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Heads of the departments and Units; Prof. Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Director of the Information & Communication Technology Centre; Mr. K. B. S. L. Wijeratna, Acting Registrar; Dr. B. B. U. P. Perera, Conference Chair; Dr. T. M. M. De Silva, Conference Secretary; Chief Editor; Track Chairs; academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Science; and the researchers participated in the occasion.
The conference day was filled with Plenary and Technical Sessions in parallel venues. Furthermore, this year's ICAPS introduced new dimensions that left attendees inspired. The Science in Nature photography exhibition competition took place for the first time in the conference's history, parallel to the main conference. The Undergraduate Research Symposium and Innovation Exhibition (URSIE) was held for the second time in conjunction with ICAPS 2025.
The principal sponsor of ICAPS 2025 was the Research Council of the University of Kelaniya. ✅Science in Nature: Through the Lens, Photography Competition 2025 – Celebrating the Harmony Between Art and Science ✅

The “Science in Nature” Photography Exhibition, organized by the Faculty of Science, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Department of Drama, Cinema and Television (Faculty of Humanities), and the Arts Council of the University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 10th October 2025 at the Faculty of Science premises. The event beautifully blended scientific insight with artistic creativity, inspiring participants to explore how science reveals the beauty of the natural world. The event was held parallel to the 6th International Conference on Applied and Pure Sciences (ICAPS 2025)
The exhibition was designed to promote the connection between scientific understanding and visual art through several objectives such as promoting scientific literacy and curiosity through creative expression, engaging diverse audiences, including non-scientists, encouraging collaboration between scientists, artists, and students, showcasing the cultural, aesthetic, and scientific relevance of nature, and providing a platform for young talents to display science-inspired photographs. Furthermore, the Faculty of Science aimed to inspire environmental awareness and scientific curiosity among students, artists, and the general public alike, through this initiative.
The event was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, who attended as the Chief Guest, and Senior Professor Sudath R.D. Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, also attended the event in his capacity as the Dean of the Faculty. Further, Heads of Departments, academic and non-academic staff members, and many students and visitors also attended the event, contributing to a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.
The exhibition entries were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprising Mr. Sanka Sammantha, Mr. Shehan Trek, and Mr. Gagan Karunachandra, renowned photographers whose works were also featured in the exhibition. Their expertise in wildlife photography, environmental storytelling, and artistic composition ensured a fair and insightful evaluation process. The panel’s dedication and professional judgment added great value to the selection of award-winning photographs.
The exhibition featured a remarkable collection of photographs submitted under four main categories: Middle School (Grades 6–9), Upper School (Grades 10–13), Undergraduate (University students), and Open Category (General public and professionals).

✅Retired Professor Somaratne Balasooriya Honoured at State Literary Awards 2025✅

A felicitation ceremony, organized by the Department of Sinhala, University of Kelaniya, to honour retired Professor Somaratne Balasooriya of the Department of Sinhala, who received the prestigious Sāhitya Ratna Award at the State Literary Awards 2025, was held on the 10th of October 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya.
The event was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as the Chief Guest, while other distinguished guests included Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Emeritus Professor Kulatilaka Kumarasinghe; Emeritus Professor Gamini Dela Bandara; Emeritus Professor Gunawardhana Nanayakkara; Emeritus Professor K. M. P. Kulasekara; and Emeritus Professor Herath Chadana Bandara.
The keynote address was delivered by retired Professor Jinadasa Danansooriya, recipient of the Sāhitya Ratna Award at the State Literary Awards 2024, who gave an inspiring speech on the literary journey of Professor Balasooriya. During the ceremony, Professor Balasooriya was presented with a token of honour by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.
The event was also attended by Senior Professor Swarna Ihalagama, Head of the Department of Sinhala, along with Chair and Senior Professor Nimal Karunaratne, other academic staff members of the Department of Sinhala, and members of the university community.

✅A Session on “Mental Well-being at the Workplace” Held at the University of Kelaniya✅

A session on "Mental Well-being at the Workplace," organized by Kalana Mithuru Sevana, in partnership with the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science - Section F and the Committee for the Popularisation of Science (CPS), was successfully held on 10th October 2025 at the Auditorium of the Staff Development Centre, University of Kelaniya.
Dr. Manoji Harishchandra, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences, was the distinguished resource person for the session. Dr. Harishchandra delivered an insightful presentation addressing key aspects of mental health and well-being in the workplace, emphasizing practical strategies for maintaining a positive and healthy work environment.
The event received positive feedback for its relevance and informative content, contributing to the participants' awareness and understanding of mental well-being principles applicable in professional settings.
The event was attended by Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Director of the Kalana Mithuru Sewana, along with the members of Kalana Mithuru Sewana; assistant student counsellors; and both academic and non-academic staff participated in the event.
