The journey of the FG Wilson brand began in 1966 with Fred Wilson and his 6 colleagues in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Business Opportunity of Generator Sets:
In the early 1970s, there was a major global energy crisis and it was a very challenging time to be in business. The 1973 Middle East war caused oil-producing countries in the region to restrict oil supplies and raise prices, causing major transportation and energy infrastructure problems in many large economies. With electricity rationing, Fred saw an opportunity. He started chartering planes and flying generator sets from the US to the UK. He rented a warehouse near London's Heathrow Airport and auctioned off the sets to the highest bidders. In 1974, Fred's business achieved $10 million in sales with just 30 employees, two of whom were his sons, Tom and Gordon, who would be a driving force in taking the business to new heights over the next 20 years. ;
New management and strategy for FG Wilson:
In the early 1980s, Fred's son Tom took over running the company, and together with his brothers Gordon and Paul, they worked to revolutionize the company and eventually the industry. ;
At a time when the market for small generator sets was populated by many small niche players, Tom Wilson brought a change in strategy to high-volume, ready-to-run, standard generator sets built with competitive costs and fast delivery. He developed self-contained small power units that were simple to purchase and operate and required minimal installation work. Designs were standardized and large investments were made in manufacturing capability. Negotiated long-term deals with engine and AC generator suppliers for the best possible prices, terms, and deliveries. Central to this was the exclusive supply deal with Perkins, then owned by Massey Ferguson, signed 34 years ago on 16 April 1986. This partnership between FG Wilson and a major engine manufacturer allowed for close collaboration on engine design and knowledge sharing and training: a close working relationship that continues today.
FG Wilson and Caterpillar:
The biggest leap for FG Wilson came in 1993 when the company moved to a 70,000-square-meter facility in Larne, Northern Ireland. FG Wilson's tremendous growth and potential in the European market Caterpillar Inc., and in 2000, FG Wilson became a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar.
Today, with 28,000 square meters in China and additional manufacturing facilities in Brazil and India, FG Wilson offers one of the widest ranges of diesel-fueled generator sets from 6.8 - 2,500 kVA, a full range of enclosures and switchgear.
