සියලු ආතල් කූඩුවක කූරු ගනිනකන් පමණි ............. කොල්ලුපිටියේ කොලුවා දත්ත හුඟක් හොයාගන්න ඇති , පස්සේ කොරෝනා කාලෙ හැම ඔපීසියකම එකතු කරපු දත්ත පොත් ඉතා ප්‍රවේශමින් භාවිතයෙන් ඉවත් කලා වගේම ආරක්ශිතව ඉවත් කරන්න ඇති... අර මැතිව් තමන් ගැන පාරම්බාන පෝඩ්කාස්ට් එකක් ඉන්ගිරීසියෙන් ලිව්ව එකේ අග අමුනලා ඇති ! ජය

Recently, I saw a man in Kollupitiya collecting very sensitive personal details, claiming it was for market research related to to***co products. He said it was on behalf of the biggest — and seemingly only — retailer nearby. The man spoke politely, but when I asked about any privacy policy or the institute responsible for handling the data, he refused to respond and quickly moved on to another individual.
At first, it all seemed harmless — until I recalled how Matthew Cox became one of the most notorious con artists in the U.S. by committing mortgage fraud. He exploited vulnerable communities by offering as little as $20 to individuals in slums under the guise of market research, eventually dragging many into serious legal and financial trouble.
Where do you think all those unknown SMS messages during election time come from? Did you give anyone permission to share your mobile number, your location, or even your possible political preferences?
Even tuition teachers now send bulk emails and WhatsApp messages urging you to join their classes — or think about that anonymous SIM card found near a crime scene.
Better manipulators can visit you in person, claiming to be conducting "research." And many people, even those who use apps like CapCut, worry about how their content might be used to improve software — or misused. What about all the books we’ve written that include our names, phone numbers, addresses, and sometimes even a friend's emergency contact info (minus the number)?
Yes, online privacy is risky — but offline impersonation and manipulation are far more dangerous.
And just to be clear: I highly support legitimate market research efforts that help organizations grow and understand their customers better — but they must have clear privacy policies and accountability.
I’ll be sharing a podcast link about Matthew Cox. In it, he boasts about how successful he was as a con man. Sure, he might exaggerate a little — but remember, he was convicted.
