Warm weather alert issued for 11 districts

The Department of Meteorology has warned that the Heat Index, or the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to reach the ‘Caution level’ in parts of the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Monaragala district.

Authorities advise the public to take precautionary measures. At job sites, workers are urged to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade. Indoors, residents are encouraged to check on the elderly and the sick.

Children should never be left unattended in vehicles. Outdoor activities should be limited, with priority given to rest, hydration, and shade. People are also advised to wear lightweight, white, or light-colored clothing.

Circular allowing bus decorations and accessories cancelled

The Commissioner General of Motor Traffic has announced the cancellation of a circular issued on 2 June 2023, which had permitted the fitting of decorations and accessories on passenger buses.

The cancellation takes effect from 9 September 2025, and bus operators are required to comply with the updated regulations.

Former UC Chairman, businessman arrested over illegal vehicle imports

Former chairman of the Wattegama Urban Council Ravindra Bandara and businessman Laksh*tha Manoj Weerabahu have been arrested in connection with an alleged illegal vehicle import and registration scheme, police said Saturday.

Authorities said two Jeep vehicles, suspected to have been illegally imported and registered with falsified details at the Department of Motor Vehicles, were also taken into custody.

Bandara, who also previously served as chairman of the Wattegama Urban Council, and Weerabahu were arrested following investigations into forged data entries and false registration records.

Police said further inquiries are under way to determine the scale of the operation and whether additional individuals are involved.

U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ship USS Santa Barbara to Arrive in Colombo

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (August 15, 2025) – The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka announces the visit of the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32) to the Port of Colombo on August 16. The visit marks the USS Santa Barbara’s first port call to Colombo, underscoring the strength of the U.S.–Sri Lanka partnership and our shared commitment to a secure, prosperous, and free Indo-Pacific. It also reflects the longstanding ties between our navies and the close cooperation that defines our relationship. Colombo will serve as a brief stop for the ship to take on fuel and supplies before continuing its mission.

The USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32) is a part of the U.S. 7th Fleet which commands the world’s largest forward-deployed fleet with the primary mission of providing operational control and planning for its forces in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, while promoting regional stability and maritime security through engagements with allies and partners.

“The arrival of the USS Santa Barbara to Sri Lanka is a powerful symbol of the U.S.–Sri Lanka partnership in action. As part of the U.S. 7th Fleet—the Navy’s largest forward-deployed fleet—this visit reflects our shared commitment to maritime security, regional stability, and a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung. “We’re proud to stand alongside Sri Lanka as we work together to promote peace and prosperity across the region.”

The USS Santa Barbara is an Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship designed to operate in near-shore environments and support forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions. Christened on October 16, 2021, it is currently operating as part of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7. The Santa Barbara conducts regular Indo-Pacific patrols to deter aggression, strengthen alliances and partnerships, and advance future warfighting capabilities.

Ministry of Industries begins Digital Transformation Programe.

The Ministry of Industries (MoIE), in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Economy, has launched a digital transformation programme aimed at modernizing the country’s industrial sector.

As part of the first phase, all institutions under the Ministry of Industries will be onboarded to the GovPay platform starting next month. The initiative is intended to streamline payments and improve service delivery.

The Ministry has also finalized plans to introduce the Industry Digital Readiness Index, a tool designed to assess the digital maturity of industries across the country.

Deputy Minister of Industries Chathuranga Abeysinghe stated, “This programme will support the digital transition of the institutions under our Ministry and help identify areas for further improvement.”

The inaugural session of the initiative was attended by Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Harsha Purasinghe, Chandima Cooray, members of the Digital Advisory Team, and Deputy Minister Eranga Udesh.

Strong wind advisory for Land Areas issued.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued a weather advisory warning of strong winds expected over several parts of the country today (15).

According to the DMC, wind speeds of 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North Central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district.

The advisory, issued at 5:30 a.m. (MET), urges the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

The DMC has advised those in affected areas to stay updated on weather alerts and to contact the 117 emergency hotline for assistance if necessary.
