"හෙට තරගයට එන ගල්කිස්ස ශාන්‍ත තෝමස් කණ්ඩායමේ ක්‍රීඩකයෝ ඔබට වඩා ශරීර ප්‍රමාණයෙන් විසාලයි. ඔවුන් ඔක්කොම කතා කරන්නේ ඉංග්‍රීසීයෙන්. සමහරවිට ඔවුන් හෙට එන්නේ බෙන්ස්, බී.එම්.ඩබ්ලිව් වගේ සුඛෝපභෝගී වාහනවලින් වෙන්න පුළුවන්. ඔයාලට බය වෙන්න කිසිම දෙයක් නෑ. හෙට උදේ මැද්දට ගිහින් මම උගන්නපු විදියට ක්‍රිකට් ගහන එක විතරයි කරන්න ඕන"

මීට අවුරුදු හතලිහකට පෙර දිනෙක මාතර ශාන්ත සර්වේෂස් පාසැලේ එකොළහෙන් පහළ ක්‍රිකට් කණ්ඩායම තමන්ගේ මුල්ම තරගයට සහභාගි වෙන්න කලින් දවසේ ලයනල් වගසිංහ නම් පුහුණුකරුවාගෙන් ක්‍රීඩකයින්ට ලැබුණ උපදෙස් තමයි ඒ.

"කිව්වත් වගේ ඔවුන් ඇවිත් හිටියේ ලොකු, ලොකු වාහනවලින්. ඔවුන් සියළු දෙනාම අපේ ක්‍රීඩකයින්ට වඩා ශරීර ප්‍රමාණයෙන් විශාලයි.

තරගයේ කාසියේ වාසිය දිනපු ශාන්ත තෝමස් කණ්ඩායම තීරණය කලා මුලින් පන්දු යවන්න . ඔවුන්ගේ ආරම්භක පන්දුයවන්නාගේ නම ඩෙනම්. ඔහු අවුරුදු අටක විතර දරුවෙක් වුණත් ඔහුගේ ශරීර ප්‍රමාණය අවුරුදු පහළොවක දහසයක කෙනෙක්ගේ වගේ. ඔහු එදා තරගයේ යොමු කරපු මුල්ම පන්දුවෙන් කඩුල්ලක් දවාගත්තා."

ශාන්ත සර්වේෂස් ක්‍රිකට් ඉතිහාසයේ එකොළහෙන් පහළ කණ්ඩායමක් ක්‍රීඩා කල මුල්ම තරගය එයයි.

"පළවෙනි කඩුල්ල වැටුණට පස්සේ බැට් කරන්න ගියේ සනත්. ඩෙනම් ඈත තියා දුවගෙන ගිණිකසයා වගේ ඇවිත් දාපු ඊළඟ බෝල හතරම නැවතුනේ හතරේ සීමාව පහු කරල. ඒ සනත් ක්‍රිකට් තරගයක මුහුණ දීපූ මුල්ම පන්දු හතර. ලෝක කුසලානවලට ගිහින් එකදිගට මනෝජ් ප්‍රභාකර්ලට ගහපු හයේ හතරේ ඒවායේ ආරම්භය එතැනයි. සනත්ටත් එතකොට වයස අවුරුදු අටක් නමයක් විතර ඇති.

"එදා සනත්ට ලොකු ලකුණු ගාණක් ගහන්න බැරිවුණා. ඒත් ශාන්ත තෝමස් කණ්ඩායමේ ක්‍රීඩකයොත් එක්ක ආපු අම්මල තාත්තලා පවා ගැස්සිල හිටියේ සනත්ගේ පාරවල්වලට.

"සනත් ඒ කාලේ අපේ ආරම්භක පන්දුයවන්නා. වමතින් මද වේගපන්දු යවල හැම මැච් එකේදිම වගේ විකට් පහේ ඒවා ගත්තා. සීම් එක දෙපැත්තෙන් පන්දුව හරියට අල්ලන විදිය කියල දුන්නාම එයාට ඒක දෙපැත්තම දෝලනය කිරීමේ හැකියාව තිබුණා"

ලෝක ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩාවේ දිශානතිය වෙනස් කල සනත් ජයසූරිය නම් ක්‍රීඩකයා ඔහුගේ මුල්ම පාසැල් තරගය ඔස්සේ ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩාවට අත්පොත් තැබූ ආකාරය ඔහුගේ මුල්ම පුහුණුකරුවා මා සමඟ පැවසුවේ එලෙසින්.
