In Turkey, there is a remarkable tradition that speaks about the nation’s importance for
knowledge. Many street side bookshops remain open throughout the night with unattended
salesmen, unlocked. This tradition is practiced in a simple yet profound belief: “Readers never
steal, and thieves never read.” It reflects a pressing truth which is, those who read books
develop not only intellect but also integrity, empathy, and discipline. Reading does not merely
educate but cultivates the character of a person.
I was reminded of this thought during a recent encounter at the Chinese Library of the
University of Sri Jayewardenepura. There, I met a young boy who was only 9 years old, reading
a book about animals. Unlike many children of his age, who are often absorbed by digital
screens, this child found joy in the quiet world of reading and it was his Hobby as well. His
knowledge regarding animals was remarkable, when I engaged in a conversation with him , He
shared fascinating facts, asked thoughtful questions, and even taught me things I had not
known.. Our brief conversation turned into a meaningful exchange of learning. When I asked
whether he owned a mobile phone he smiled and said no. That answer, simple yet profound,
lingered with me long after our conversation ended.
After, I came to a realization about the deeper connection between reading and leadership.
When we read, only one of our senses - the sense of sight is engaged. Unlike watching videos
or playing games, reading demands imagination. It strengthens what I call our sixth sense: the
ability to visualize and predict outcomes. This inner ability is what that lies at the heart of
effective leadership. A person who reads, is able to think independently, manage risks, and act
with confidence and clarity.
True leadership emerges from understanding, reflection, and most importantly confident
decision-making. Those who nourish their minds through reading are able lead others with
vision and purpose. But How ? When we read we’re able to imagine things ; when we’re able
to imagine , we can predict ; through prediction we can calculate the best possible way to do
something and through that we can take purposeful decisions and manage risks, which builds
a leader who can lead a team, a company or a nation as well.
