🇱🇰 Over 19,000 Overseas Sri Lankans Step Forward to Help Rebuild Our Nation

As Sri Lanka continues to recover from the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, thousands of Sri Lankans living and working abroad have rallied in support of their motherland.

According to Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, more than 19,000 overseas Sri Lankan workers have already contributed to the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund as of 2 November.

The government has now introduced two simple ways for Sri Lankans abroad to help:

🔹 Send Money:
A special account at Bank of Ceylon has been opened to receive financial contributions from overseas. Funds sent through Sri Lankan missions abroad are also accepted for those facing banking difficulties.

🔹 Send Essential Goods (Free of Charge):
Those wishing to send dry rations, medical items or other essentials can now do so without any customs duties or charges. A dedicated Customs task force has been appointed to fast-track clearance.
(Note: These concessions apply only to goods addressed to the Disaster Management Centre.)

All Sri Lankan embassies and high commissions worldwide have been briefed, ensuring the process is smooth and quick. Once items reach the Disaster Management Centre, they will be distributed immediately through District Secretaries to families in disaster-hit areas.

At a moment when so many are struggling, the kindness of overseas Sri Lankans is helping rebuild homes, communities, and hope.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka needs us.

(A nation responds to a National Disaster)

Sri Lanka is facing one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent years. Floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone "Ditwah" have displaced hundreds of thousands and left hospitals struggling to cope with the surge in injured citizens.

According to official reports, the death toll has risen daily, with many more still missing. Over half a million Sri Lankans have been affected, while nearly 78,000 individuals have been evacuated to temporary shelters across the country [1][2][3]. The scale of the disaster has placed enormous pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL), first responders, and the national healthcare system.

Yet, in the middle of this tragedy, something profoundly Sri Lankan is happening again, the spirit of giving.

Across the country, people formed long queues at blood banks soon after a single public request was issued. From youth to elderly, individuals lined up to donate blood, showing the strength and humanity that define our nation.

Sri Lanka is also known globally for its extraordinary legacy of eye donation. Since 1961, the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society has enabled tens of thousands of corneal transplants locally and internationally, becoming one of the largest eye-donor sources in the world [4][5].

In 2025 alone, over 5,100 eye donations were recorded, continuing a tradition of unparalleled compassion.

In moments like this, every act of kindness counts.

Please put your safety first. If the rain is heavy or the water level is rising, don’t wait, move to higher ground or a safe home nearby.

✅️Avoid unnecessary travel. Roads may look safe from far away but can become dangerous within minutes during cloudbursts.

✅️If you live near a slope or hill, be alert. Cracks in walls, unusual sounds, or sudden muddy water flow can be early signs of a landslide. Leave immediately if you notice anything unusual.

✅️Do not cross flooded roads. Even knee-deep water can hide open drains, strong currents, or fallen wires.

✅️Keep children close and indoors. They may not sense the danger of slippery paths, fast water, or unstable ground.

💥Charge your phones and power banks. Power cuts may happen during heavy storms. Stay connected.

✅️Check on elderly neighbours and families. Some may be scared, alone, or unable to move quickly during emergencies.

✅️Stay away from rivers, canals, and overflowing tanks. Water levels can rise suddenly and without warning.

✅️If you are in a low-lying area, pack an essentials bag. Include medicine, documents, water, a torch, and dry clothes, just in case you need to leave at short notice.

✅️Fishermen and coastal communities, please avoid going to sea. The winds and waves are unpredictable and dangerous right now.

✅️Do not touch or go near fallen electric poles or wires. Report them immediately.

✅️Follow official updates. Rely on DMC alerts, Met Department notices, and police announcements, they are real-time and reliable.

✅️If you feel unsafe, move early. Do not wait until night or until the water rises. Early decisions save lives.

Stay calm and support each other. In times like this, a small act, offering a ride, sharing a meal, or comforting someone, can make a big difference.

රැජිනියන් උපදින්නේ නෑ, ඔවුන් නිර්මාණය කරනු ලබනවා... 🐝👑

මේ මී මැසි ලෝකයේ පුදුම කතාවක්! රැජිනක් මිය ගියාම, රටක වගේ මී මැසි ජනපදයක අවුල් සහගත, අරාජික තත්ත්වයක් ඇතිවෙන්නේ නෑ. ඒ වෙනුවට, සම්පුර්ණ ජනපදයම නිහඬ අරමුණක් වෙනුවෙන් පෙළ ගැසෙනවා.. මී වද බිඳ වැටෙන්නේ නෑ. එය අනුවර්තනය වෙනවා. මුළු මී වදයම එකතු වෙලා අලුත් රැජිනක් වෙනුවෙන් කීටයෙක් තෝරා ගන්නවා. සාමාන්‍ය පෙනුමක් තියෙන කීටයන් සමූහයකින් කිහිප දෙනෙක්ව තෝරා ගන්නේ ඔවුන් විශේෂ නිසා නෙවෙයි, ඔවුන්ට විශේෂ වෙන්න පුළුවන් නිසා.

අනාගත රැජිනක් අනෙක් අයගෙන් වෙන් කරන්නේ දෛවය හෝ ජාන විද්‍යාව නෙවෙයි. එය ඇයට ලබා දෙන ආහාරයයි. එනම් ඇයට ලැබෙන විශේෂ ආහාරය හෙවත් රාජකීය ජෙලි (Royal Jelly) නිසයි. මේ ඝන, පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ බහුල ද්‍රව්‍යය පරිවර්තනයේ අමෘතයයි. ඒක තමයි සාමාන්‍ය කීටයෙක් අසාමාන්‍ය රැජිනක් බවට පත් කරන මැජික් එක. මෙහිදී වැදගත් වෙන්නේ දෛවය නෙවෙයි, පෝෂණයයි.

රාජකීය ජෙලි (Royal Jelly) කියන්නේ මී මැස්සන් විසින් නිපදවන විශේෂිත ද්‍රව්‍යයක්. මේක සුදු පැහැති, ක්‍රීම් වැනි පෙනුමක් තියෙනවා. මී මැසි ලෝකයේදී, මේ රාජකීය ජෙලි තමයි රැජින මී මැස්සන්ගේ ජීවිතයේ සහ සංවර්ධනයේ ප්‍රධාන රහස වෙන්නේ.

රාජකීය ජෙලි ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ජලය, ප්‍රෝටීන, සීනි වර්ග (ෆෘක්ටෝස් සහ ග්ලූකෝස් ඇතුළුව), ලිපිඩ, විටමින් (විශේෂයෙන් බී-සංකීර්ණ විටමින්), ඛනිජ ලවණ සහ ඇමයිනෝ අම්ල අඩංගු සංකීර්ණ මිශ්‍රණයක්. එහි ඇති සුවිශේෂී සංයෝගයක් තමයි 10-HDA (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid). මෙය රාජකීය ජෙලි වලට ආවේණික සංයෝගයක් වන අතර, එහි ඇති සෞඛ්‍යමය ගුණාංගවලට මෙය දායක වන බව විශ්වාස කෙරෙනවා.

රාජකීය ජෙලි නිපදවනු ලබන්නේ තරුණ සේවක මී මැස්සන් (worker bees) විසින්. ඔවුන්ගේ ශරීරයේ ඇති ෆැරින්ජියල් ග්‍රන්ථි (pharyngeal glands) සහ මැන්ඩිබියුලර් ග්‍රන්ථි (mandibular glands) වලින් ශ්‍රාවය කරන ස්‍රාවයන් මිශ්‍ර වීමෙන් රාජකීය ජෙලි සෑදෙනවා. මී වදය තුළ සිටින වයසින් අඩු, විශේෂයෙන් දින 5 ත් 15 ත් අතර වයසැති සේවක මී මැස්සන් මේ සඳහා විශේෂිතයි. ඔවුන් තම උදරයේ ඇති මේද ග්‍රන්ථිවලින් මේදය සහ ප්‍රෝටීන අවශෝෂණය කර, පසුව ඒවා ෆැරින්ජියල් ග්‍රන්ථි මඟින් රාජකීය ජෙලි බවට පරිවර්තනය කරනවා.

මී මැසි ජනපදයක රැජිනක් බිහි කිරීමට අවශ්‍ය වූ විට, සේවක මී මැස්සන් විසින් විශේෂයෙන් විශාල රැජින කුටි (queen cells) ගොඩනඟනවා. මේවාට රැජින බිත්තර දැමූ පසු, එම කීටයාට ජීවිත කාලය පුරාම බහුලව රාජකීය ජෙලි ලබා දෙනවා. අනෙකුත් සාමාන්‍ය කීටයන්ට රාජකීය ජෙලි ලැබෙන්නේ ඔවුන්ගේ මුල් දින කිහිපය තුළ පමණයි. සේවක සහ පිරිමි (ඩ්‍රෝන්) මී මැසි කීටයන්ට රාජකීය ජෙලි ලැබෙන්නේ ඔවුන්ගේ ජීවිතයේ මුල් දින 2-3 තුළ පමණයි. ඊට පසුව ඔවුන්ට මී පැණි සහ පරාග මිශ්‍ර වූ "බී බ්‍රෙඩ්" (bee bread) ආහාරයට ලැබෙනවා.

රාජකීය ජෙලි වල ඇති අද්විතීය පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ සහ හෝමෝන වැනි සංයෝග, රැජින කීටයාගේ ජානමය ප්‍රකාශනය වෙනස් කරමින්, සාමාන්‍ය මී මැස්සෙකුට වඩා විශාල, වැඩි කාලයක් ජීවත් වන සහ බිත්තර දැමීමේ හැකියාව ඇති රැජිනක් බවට පත් කරනවා. මෙය පෝෂණය මගින් ජීවියෙකුගේ දෛවය වෙනස් කළ හැකි ආකාරය පිළිබඳ පුදුමාකාර උදාහරණයක්. මේ අනුව, රාජකීය ජෙලි කියන්නෙ මී මැසි ජනපදයේ පැවැත්මට අත්‍යවශ්‍ය, සුවිශේෂී මී මැසි නිෂ්පාදනයක් වන අතර, එය මී මැස්සන්ගේ පුදුමාකාර ජීව විද්‍යාත්මක ක්‍රියාවලියක ප්‍රතිඵලයක්.

රාජකීය ජෙලි දිගටම ලැබෙන එකම කීටයා රැජින බවට පත් වෙනවා. ඇය විශාල වෙනවා, වැඩි කාලයක් ජීවත් වෙනවා, වදයේ නායකත්වය අරගෙන, එය නැවත ගොඩනඟනවා. කලබල තිබුණු තැනට ඇය විනයක්, රිද්මයක් ගෙන එනවා. ඇය බලය වෙනුවෙන්ම උපත ලබන්නේ නැහැ, ඇයව ඒ වෙනුවෙන්ම ඇති දැඩි කරනවා.

උපාලි ධනවලවිතාන ලියූ සරල හා චිත්‍රපට ගී සංඛ්‍යාව විශාලය.

37 වැනි වියේ ජීවිතයෙන් සමුගෙන යන විට උපාලි ධනවලවිතාන 100කට ආසන්න චිත්‍රපට සංඛ්‍යාවක ගීත රචනා කර තිබිණි. අරුණ වලා දුහුල ඉරා (රක්තා), කඳුළු පැතුම් (තණ ගිරවි) රෑන් අතරේ මළ හිරුගේ (කඩවුණු පොරොන්දුව) වළා ඉමෙන් එහා (පෙති ගෝමර), සමුදුරු හතකින් (මිහිඳුම් සිහින) රන් අකුරින් ලියවෙන්න පුතේ (රණ දෙරණ) නාඬන්න තරු පොකුරේ (රෝසි) දියකිඳුරිය සේ සාගරේ, සාගර ළවැල්ලේ (ඔබටයි ප්‍රිය ආදරේ) සක්වළ එතෙරට ඇසෙනා (ගෙදර බුදුන් අම්මා) සිහින අහසේ වසන්තේ (නැවැත හමුවෙමු) ඔහු ලියූ චිත්‍රපට ගී අතුරින් කිහිපයක් පමණි.

නැවැත හමුවෙමු චිත්‍රපටයේ ‘සිහින අහසේ වසන්තේ’ ගීතය ලියා ඇත්තේ දයාසේන ගුණසිංහයන් බවට වරෙක කියැවුණු අතර ඒ සම්බන්ධයෙන් දැඩි මතභේදයක් පැනනැඟිණි. ඒ වන විට අදාළ දෙදෙනාම ජීවතුන් අතර නොසිටීම නිසා ඇති වූයේ මහත් ව්‍යාකූල තත්ත්වයකි. එහෙත් 1992 ජනවාරියේ නිකුත් වූ ‘තිරතරු’ සිනමා පුවත්පතට “මේ ගීතය ලියුවේ මම නෙවෙයි උපාලි යැයි’ දයාසේන ගුණසිංහයන් කර තිබූ ප්‍රකාශයක් හමුවීම නිසා උපාලි ධනවලවිතානට සාධාරණය ඉටුවිය. ඔහු ජීවතුන් අතර සිටියදී ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කළ ඔහුගේ ගීත නිර්මාණ එකතුව වූ ‘උදුම්බරා’ කෘතියට මේ ගීතය ඇතුළත්ව තිබුණේ නැත. ‘උදුම්බරා’ පළ වූයේද අදාළ ගීතය නැවැත හමුවෙමු තිරගත වූයේද එකම වර්ෂයකදී වීම ඒ ප්‍රමාදයට හේතුවන්නට ඇතැයි සිතිය හැකිය.

විවිධ තේමා ඔස්සේ නෙක නෙක රස දනවන ආකාරයෙන් ගීත රචනයේ සමත්කම් පෑ උපාලි ඉන් නොනැවතී චිත්‍රපට දෙබස් රචනය හා තිර රචනයටද එක් විය. ‘ඔබටයි ප්‍රියේ ආදරේ’ චිත්‍රපටයේ තිර රචනය ඔහු ලියූවකි. ‘සිංහරාජයෝ’ චිත්‍රපටයේ තිර කතාව හා දෙබස් ඔහු රචනා කළද එය නිෂ්පාදනය වූයේ නැත.අඩුවෙන් කතා කළ නමුත් උපාලි වැඩියෙන් වැඩ කළේය. අවුරුදු 38ක් වැනි අඩු වයසකින් ජීවිතයෙන් සමුගෙන යනු ඇතැයි අන් කිසිවකු තබා ඔහුවත් නොසිතන්නට ඇත. උපාලිගේ වියොවින් බිරිය ශ්‍රී මතී, දූ දරුවන් වන නිරූපමා, තාරකා සහ දුල්ෂාන්, විශාරද සරත් දසනායක ඇතුළු සමීපතමයන් පමණක් නොව ඔහු ලියූ ගී රස විඳි රසික පර්ෂදයද කම්පාවන්නට ඇත.

ගීත සිය ගණනක් ලියූවද උපාලි ධනවලවිතානගේ කෙටි ජීවිත කාලයේදී ඔහු නිසි ඇගැයීමකට ලක්වූවාද යන්න ප්‍රශ්නයකි. චිත්‍රපට පසුබිම් ගීතයේදී සම්මානයට සුදුසු ගීත ඔහු අතින් ලියැවී තිබුණු බවට විචාරක මත පළ වුවද සම්මාන ලැබුණේ නැත. කිසිදු අවස්ථාවක මතභේදයට තුඩුදෙන කාරණා මාධ්‍ය හරහා කතා කිරීමට උපාලි ධනවලවිතාන ඉදිරිපත් වූයේ නැත. පන්හිඳට සිත්සේ කතා කිරීමට ඉඩදී ඔහු මුනිවත රැක්කේය. එහෙත් ඔහු පන්හිඳෙන් ලියූ ගී තවමත් සහෘද හදවත් සමඟ ‍ෙදාඩමලු වෙයි.

මේ ඇගේ කතාව යි.

හිතේ රැඳුණු සෙවනැලී,
ඔබ නොමැතිව ද යමී...
කඳුළු යට ලස්සන වැලී,
මතකයේ ඔබ මතු වෙමී

රැයේ නිල්වන් නුරා,
මගේ නිස්සාරය දනී
ආදරේ ලියූ ගීකුරු,
හුස්ම වගේ ඇදී
අන්තරා මතුවුණත්,
මම ඔබෙන් යමී

දහදිය දන්දී, හුස්ම දී,
බැඳුණු මේ රැහැන් ගිලී
වේදනා මතු වුණත්,
කියන්න දුක රැඳී

ජීවිතේ ගැනීම් නොවේ,
දීමේ හුරුවකී...
බොහෝ සෙනෙහස් ගිලිහුණත්,
මා ඔබ හා රැඳී...
රන්හුය හඬවල්ම නොවේ,
සෝ සුසුම් ගිනි දැවී
නෙලන්න බැහැ පිපී...

කණාමැදිරිය

රැයෙන් රැයකට නුඹ සෙවනැල්ල
මතකය ලිහිල්ව පදවැල් ගැලවී
හුස්ම හමාරක් පපුවේ අල්ලා
නුඹ නොමැතිවත් ජීවිතය ගලා

නෙලා ගත නොහැකි මලකි නුඹ
හිතේ තිබෙන නිදහස්ව
පැතුම් ගඟක් නිහඬ ගීයක්
මතකවල සැඟ වී නිමලව

මංඉම් නොවූ රාත්‍රී වලට
නුඹේ හුස්මපොද පාත්වී
ලතාවකි විනිවිද සැමදා රෑ මැද
නුඹ රුව පමණක් සොයා ගැලී

නුඹ නොමැති ගීය මෙය ද
කඳු අස්සේ හමාර වූ
රුවලක් මෙන් යමි මම ගසාගෙන
සැඟවුණු මගෙ හුස්මේ සදාතන

අහස් කොනක රැඳුණු තරුව
මා නුඹේ නෙත් සෙවූ
සුන්බුන් වූ මේ හදවතේ
නුඹ පමණකි ඒ කණාමැදිරිය, අමාවකේ
