🏏 "We Are Second to None" – Sangakkara's Rallying Cry to Sri Lanka Women Before World Cup

Sri Lanka cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara has urged the national women's team to believe in their abilities as they prepare for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in England.

🇱🇰 "When you are going to a World Cup of this nature, we should specially remember that we are second to none."

Sangakkara reminded the players of their recent achievements, including the historic series win over England in England in 2023 and the Asia Cup triumph in 2024.

💬 "Our team can compete with any team in the world because we have beaten some strong teams."

He also emphasized the importance of trust, unity and self-belief within the squad.

"A team must have a belief amongst the players. The decisions that you take must be strongly backed up by trust and a sense of togetherness."

On handling pressure, Sangakkara offered a simple formula:

"If you can break the pressure down to just one ball at a time, it is very easy to make up your mind on how to face up to each delivery."

🏏🇱🇰 Sangakkara Inspires Sri Lanka Women Cricketers

Sri Lanka cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara joined the Cricket Transformation Committee in a key meeting with Sri Lanka Cricket-contracted women cricketers, focusing on building successful careers on and off the field.

Players from the national team, Sri Lanka ‘A’ and U19 squads took part in the session, chaired by Eran Wickramaratne.

Sangakkara, along with Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny, stressed teamwork, discipline, and role clarity as key to success at the highest level.

Wickramaratne hailed the women’s team’s Asia Cup triumph as a historic moment, saying efforts will continue to ensure equal support and opportunities for women’s cricket in Sri Lanka.

A commanding all-round performance saw Sri Lanka defeat West Indies by 41 runs in the opening ODI at Sabina Park, Kingston.

🔹 Captain Kusal Mendis led from the front with a superb 72 off 62 balls, striking four fours and four sixes to set the tone for Sri Lanka's 303/7.

🔹 Pathum Nissanka once again proved his class with a patient 79 off 103 deliveries, anchoring the innings and laying the foundation for a competitive total.

🔹 With the ball, Dushmantha Chameera turned match-winner, claiming 4 wickets and breaking the backbone of the West Indies chase at crucial moments.

🔹 Maheesh Theekshana was outstanding as well, delivering a miserly spell of 2 for 26 from his 10 overs, choking the hosts in the middle overs and applying relentless pressure.

Despite a fighting 56 from Shai Hope and 45 from Justin Greaves, West Indies were bowled out for 262 in 49.2 overs.

Three months after he led India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil, Suryakumar Yadav has been removed as the captain and is unlikely to find a place in the side going forward. This comes ahead of the tours of Ireland and England starting later this month.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, in consultation with the team management and selection committee, will appoint a new captain for the new cycle.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” a top BCCI official told The Indian Express.
