A Memorable Visit to Birla Vidya Niketan, New Delhi
On the 22nd of August, a group of 30 students and 5 teachers from Gateway College Colombo had the privilege of visiting Birla Vidya Niketan, New Delhi, following a kind invitation extended by the Principal, Ms. Meenakshi Kushwaha, during her recent visit to Sri Lanka. We were honoured to be personally welcomed by Ms. Kushwaha upon our arrival.
From the very beginning, we were embraced with warmth and tradition, a melodious Hindu hymn and the symbolic lighting of the lamp of knowledge set a beautiful tone for the day. The expansive campus, with its lush grounds, skating rinks, yoga spaces, and modern facilities, was a testament to the school’s commitment to holistic education. Yet, what impressed us most was the discipline of the students, balanced with their friendliness and openness, which made us feel instantly at home.
A particularly striking detail was the remarkable similarity between the uniforms of Birla Vidya Niketan and Gateway College. It felt almost poetic, symbolising the natural bond between our two schools; there was no sense of “us” and “them,” only young learners exchanging ideas, laughter, and friendship.
The cultural exchange programme was undoubtedly a highlight of the day. Both schools proudly showcased their traditions through music and dance, creating moments of joy and mutual appreciation. Our students were delighted to present a Sri Lankan cultural dance performance and a song, which were warmly received by the Birla Vidya Niketan community. In turn, we were deeply touched by the performances of our Indian counterparts, which beautifully reflected the richness of their heritage. A particularly moving gesture was the playing of the Sri Lankan National Anthem, which left our delegation both proud and deeply appreciative.
The programme also included interactive scientific and cultural activities that encouraged collaboration and creativity. These sessions provided meaningful opportunities for students from both schools to connect, discover common interests, and form lasting friendships across borders.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Deputy Principal, Ms. Mona Chopra, whose thoughtful arrangements and gracious hospitality made our visit both comfortable and enriching.
As we departed, we carried with us not only the memories of an impressive campus and engaging activities but also the warmth of new friendships and the spirit of cultural unity. The visit to Birla Vidya Niketan was truly an unforgettable highlight of our journey to India, and we look forward to nurturing this meaningful connection in the years to come.
