The World Welcomes Pope Leo XIV – A New Shepherd for the Faithful
In a moment of great spiritual significance, the Catholic Church joyfully announces the election of American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope, who has taken the papal name Leo XIV. His Holiness greeted the world for the first time from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, offering his Urbi et Orbi blessing—“to the city and to the world”—with humility and grace on Thursday, May 8.
Cardinal Prevost, known for his deep pastoral compassion, theological wisdom, and commitment to the global mission of the Church, was elected by 133 Cardinal Electors following prayerful deliberation within the sacred halls of the Sistine Chapel. As the newly elected Successor of Saint Peter, Pope Leo XIV now carries the immense responsibility of guiding over a billion Catholics worldwide through faith, unity, and service.
