Kokoyah DDO Kerkulah Reaffirms Commitment Despite Challenges, Calls for Mobility and Salary Increment

Written by: Melvin Paylee Zico Siakor /[email protected]

(August 20, 2025): Amid challenges such as the lack of mobility and low salary, Kokoyah Statutory District Development Officer, Roosevelt Urey Kerkulah, says he remains committed to performing his duties.

Speaking recently on Radio Gbarnga, Mr. Kerkulah explained that, as a son of the district called to serve, he will do everything possible to deliver on his mandate.

While reaffirming his commitment, Mr. Kerkulah emphasized the urgent need for mobility support.

He disclosed that the secondhand motorcycle he personally purchased about five years ago has outlived its lifespan, yet he continues to rely on it. According to him, this severely limits his ability to move efficiently across the district.

He stressed that if his office is provided with reliable transportation, it would significantly enhance performance, particularly in reaching communities and inspecting ongoing development projects.

At the same time, the Kokoyah Statutory District Development Officer called for an increment in the salaries of local authorities to reflect their qualifications and responsibilities.

He noted that the current salaries of several local leaders are far below their positions.

Additionally, Mr. Kerkulah appealed for the inclusion of long-serving volunteer staff on the government payroll, acknowledging their years of dedicated service to the district.

The United Congress Driver Union in B**g County has expressed frustration over what it describes as the maltreatment and unlawful detention of three of its officials during a protest on Monday.

‎The Union accused the police of using excessive force to disrupt their strike action aimed at drawing national government's attention to issues affecting them.

‎ According to the Union, the police allegedly brutalized and apprehended key organizers of the protest, who had gone to effectuate the Union's directive by preventing some drivers of the Congress from commuting to Monrovia in observance of the strike.

Among other issues, the United Drivers Union was protesting against the proliferation of police checkpoints along the Gbarnga-Monrovia highway, extortion of bribes and police harassment of drivers.

‎ They alarmed over four new checkpoints along the route, which they say are severly disrupting traffic, exacerbating corruption and posing financial hardship on drivers.

‎The Union is urging national government to crack down on unauthorized checkpoints, which are widely seen as a source of corruption. Reports by the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia for 2022 and 2023 ranked the police as the most corrupt security institution in the country.

‎The drivers are also demanding the immediate dissolution of the Liberia Traffic Management (LTM), which they accuse of fueling police harassment and extortion.

‎ In response, the Acting Police Commander for B**g County, Chris Gono, denied the Union’s allegation of police brutalities against drivers, labelling them as false and misleading.

Inspector Gono stated that the drivers were arrested for blocking the road, an action he said posed disruption of traffic.

According to Dr. Zwuogbae, improving B**g County’s health system must begin with preventing maternal deaths at all levels.

Speaking on Monday, August 18, 2025, during his induction ceremony held at the B**g County Health Team Office on the Phebe Compound, he stressed that no woman should die while giving birth.

He used the occasion to call on health workers in the county to strengthen services at clinics, especially in rural areas, adding that such measures would greatly help reduce maternal deaths.

Dr. Zwuogbae described it as disheartening to see mothers and their babies dying during childbirth, emphasizing the urgent need to do everything possible to save their lives.

He succeeds Dr. Jefferson K. Sibley, who now serves as Technical Advisor for all County Health Officers across Liberia.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Zwuogbae served as CHO in Sinoe and Grand Gedeh Counties.

Recently, the Ministry of Health ( MoH) honored him and his team in Grand Gedeh for reporting zero maternal deaths in May and June this year.

Imposter Alert

Radio Gbarnga wishes to alert the public and its partners about recent acts of impersonation.

It has come to our attention that some reporters from other media institutions in Gbarnga have been posing as Radio Gbarnga reporters at public events.

The most recent incident occurred during a donation program at the Office of Persons with Disabilities in Gbarnga. Three reporters from a notable media house attended the event, and one of them falsely identified himself as our Director of Programs, Mr. Melvin Paylee Zico Siakor. Later, our Senior Reporter, Rancy Clarke, was officially invited to cover the event and discovered the impersonation.

These actions are tarnishing the image of Radio Gbarnga. Event organizers have begun expressing concerns and even threatening to withdraw their collaboration with our institution.

We strongly caution those involved to desist immediately. We also urge all media institutions in B**g County to warn their reporters against such unprofessional practices.

Radio Gbarnga will not hesitate to name and shame individuals and their institutions should such incidents occur again.

Finally, we call on all event organizers to demand proper identification from anyone claiming to represent Radio Gbarnga.

‎MoH suspends four B**g County Health Team officials over unauthorized withdrawal

‎By Rancy Clarke

The Ministry of Health has suspended four officials from B**g County Health Team for unauthorized withdrawal of funds from the county health team’s account.

‎Those suspended are: Dr. Jefferson Sibley, County Health Officer, County Health Services Administrator, Mr. Sam Siakor, Solomon Sagbeh, Accountant, and Charles Tiah, Compliance Officer.

‎Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists Friday, Martha Morris, Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Health, confirmed these officials were suspended for one month without pay for violating ministry’s mandate.

‎Madam Morris lamented that the suspended officials withdrew and expended money from the health team’s account without the approval of the health minister. She stated the minister had placed a moratorium on the account prior to the withdrawal and that the county health team senior officials’ action undermined the directive.

‎Minister Morris at the same time dismissed reports that the suspended officials mismanaged funds intended for the operations of the county health team; clarifying that their suspension was due to procedural errors.

‎However, Morris acknowledged that the B**g County Health Team officials had no knowledge of the moratorium issued by the Minister but their inability to seek the minister’s approval before withdrawal prompted their suspension.

Liberian Award-Winning Journalist and Rights Advocate, Bailey, Calls on President Boakai to Deploy AFL in the Fight Against Drugs

Written by: Melvin Paylee Zico Siakor /[email protected]

(August 15, 2025): Liberian award-winning journalist and rights advocate, Moses Bailey has called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr , to direct the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) to join the fight against drugs in the country.

Mr. Bailey believes that involving the AFL will make the fight against drugs more effective, noting that the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has so far struggled to deliver significant results.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Bailey expressed concern that since President Boakai declared the drug crisis a national emergency, he has not witnessed the level of attention and political will required to address it.

“You have since declared the drug issue a national emergency, but honestly, I have not seen the level of attention and political will necessary to treat it as such,” Mr. Bailey stated.

He reminded President Boakai that when former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah declared the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and Coronavirus (COVID-19) national emergencies, they included the AFL to help enforce regulations, a decision he said was instrumental in eradicating both diseases from Liberia.

“When and -19 were declared national emergencies by Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah, respectively, they included the AFL to help enforce the regulations put in place to stop the spread of the diseases,” he added.

Citing a security survey by NAYMOTE Partners for Democratic Development, Mr. Bailey noted that Liberians hold the AFL in high regard and are more likely to follow its instructions compared to any other security agency in the country.

He urged President Boakai to leverage this public trust in the AFL to strengthen the fight against drugs.

According to him, reports from community residents indicate that four young people recently died in the Soul Clinic Community in Monrovia, while another four or five young people died in Gbarnga, B**g County, within a single week from the same drug.

He described these deaths as a strong enough reason to launch a more aggressive and coordinated response.

“We cannot continue to wait and drag our feet. If something is an emergency, it must be treated with seriousness and urgency,” Mr. Bailey stressed.

Mr. Bailey concluded by extending his deepest condolences to President Boakai over the death of his Chief of Office Staff and Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Sylvester Grigsby.

Presidential Press Secretary Responds to State Department Report on Media Accreditation

By Emmanuel Ballah

Presidential Press Secretary, Madam Kula Fofana has responded to the United States Department of State 2024 Human Rights Report on Media Accreditation.

In the report released recently, the State Department raised concerns over self-censorship by some journalists, particularly mentioning media accreditation guidelines introduced by the office of the Presidential Press Secretary for journalists covering the Executive Mansion in June 2024.

“A June 20 meeting between Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana and media executives turned contentious, leading several editors to walk out. The incident arose concerning new accreditation requirements for journalists covering the executive mansion, including police clearances and institutional tax clearance certificates. These policies, along with demands by the government for free website advertising, which impacted newspaper revenues, sparked concerns regarding media freedom and independence".

In response, Madam Kula Fofana welcomed the feedback and clarified that the media accreditation guidelines align with global practice designed to strengthen professionalism, ensure the safety of all stakeholders, and uphold institutional accountability.

These requirements include:
• Police clearance for individual journalists, as mandated by the Executive Protection Service (EPS), to safeguard the President and the Executive Mansion.
• Business registration to confirm the legal status of media organizations operating in Liberia.
• Tax clearance to verify compliance with national laws, noting that this requirement is applied with flexibility and is not intended as a rigid barrier to access.

Fofana furthered that such measures are not unique to Liberia. She added: “in the United States, for example, journalists seeking White House credentials must undergo background checks by the U.S. Secret Service, and their media organizations must meet specific recognition and accreditation standards. Similarly, Ghana, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and other democracies have established vetting processes for journalists covering their respective heads of state, combining security protocols with professional validation.”

The Presidential Press Secretary noted that the policy seeks to balance two equally important goals: protecting the constitutional right to a free press and ensuring the security of the Presidency as a national institution.
