Gbarpolu County Chief and Elders Conclude Development Council Meeting in Kongba District

By Jallah Crawu

KUMGBOR TOWN, Gbarpolu — On May 2, 2025, the Chief and Elders Council of Gbarpolu County wrapped up its inaugural development meeting in Kumgbor Town, Kongba District.

Opening the session, Paramount Chief George B. Sumo, Chairman of the Chief and Elders Council, said, “Today’s meeting is convened to bring us together to discuss the development issues of our county, as requested by the President for the chiefs and elders of Liberia.”

He said that this initiative represents a new avenue for chiefs and elders to contribute to the growth and development of the country and their respective county.

The day-long gathering saw participation from chiefs, elders, commissioners, youths, men, and women from all across Gbarpolu County.

During the meeting, attendees deliberated on a broad spectrum of local and national issues, including the government’s responsibilities to its citizens and the county’s role in national development.

Participants expressed enthusiasm, noting that this was the first time in Liberia’s history that such a mandate had been granted to chiefs and elders to actively participate in development planning.

The discussion focused on the growth and development strategies for Gbarpolu County.

The said this aligned with the President’s development agenda.

Besides, a comprehensive resolution was drafted, and a 21-member committee was formed to oversee the implementation of development activities.

Details of the resolution will be made public once approved by the Chief and Elders Council.

On the other hand, to strengthen the committee’s work, three representatives from each district, along with the district council heads, were selected.

Emphasizing the committee’s focus, the Korninga Chiefdom Paramount Chief George B. Sumo stated that it would prioritize addressing the urgent needs of Gbarpolu citizens.

Gbarpolu County Holds Critical Meeting on New Healthcare Facility in Camp Alpha

By Henry B Gboluma Jr

CAMP ALPHA, Gbarpolu — In Camp Alpha town, the Gbarpolu County Health Team held an important meeting to discuss the construction of a new clinic and address the urgent need for improved healthcare services in the district.

The meeting took place on April 18, 2025, and was attended by key officials including the County Health Officer (CHO), County Health Services Administrator (CHSA), Community Health Department Director (CHDD), and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer. Their main focus was the development of a primary health facility in Camp Alpha to better serve the local population.

The project, valued at around $100,000 USD, is funded through a 2% contribution from YDMC, an exploration company operating in the district.

The company has been active in Kongba District for over five years and contributed a total of $150,000 USD, in accordance with Liberia’s 2000 mining laws. Citizens agreed to allocate these funds to build a clinic in Camp Alpha, the main town affected in Gbarpolu Electoral District #3.

Mr. Roberts Garsial, the community liaison officer, expressed optimism about the project, stating that with YDMC’s support, the new clinic will greatly improve healthcare access for residents who have long been underserved.

Currently, residents of Kongba District, with an estimated population of over 13,580 per health data, depend solely on the Kumgbor Clinic, which is located 4 to 7 hours away from Camp Alpha. This difficult access highlights the critical need for better healthcare infrastructure in the area.

The community expressed strong support for the proposed project, hoping that the funds would be released promptly so the project could be completed within three months.

Despite these efforts, some challenges remain. The clinic project in Normor has stalled, leaving many without proper healthcare facilities. Local authorities are exploring options to complete the Normor Clinic using available funds—$25,000 USD from the County and Social Development Funds. Commissioner Lawrence Sherbro emphasized the urgency, stating, “We need timely implementation to get this project back on track.”

Progress is also being made on the Zuie Clinic, with finishing work underway and expected to be completed soon.

Dr. Kezelebah S. Goyan, the current CHO, voiced strong support for these initiatives.

He emphasized that more health facilities are needed not just in Kongba but across Gbarpolu to meet the healthcare needs of the county.

For the Camp Alpha project, community members were advised to allocate four acres of land for the new clinic, conduct a site survey, and obtain tribal certification to avoid future issues.

The county health team reaffirmed its commitment to supporting these efforts and called on all stakeholders to work together closely.

The meeting showcased active community participation and the government’s dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure in Gbarpolu County.

As construction on the Camp Alpha clinic is set to kick off, residents remain hopeful that their collective efforts will lead to better health outcomes for everyone in the district.
