A Matter of Protocol: VP Koung Clarifies Absence from Chief Justice Yuohโ€™s Farewell Ceremony

For Immediate Release
August 21, 2025

The Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia wishes to clarify today's publication by FrontPage Africa with the caption "LEADING with MALICE" regarding the absence of Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr, from the official retirement ceremony of former Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh held on August 15, 2025.

The Vice President has consistently attended programs, ceremonies, and other official functions of the Honorable Supreme Court of Liberia during the tenure of former Chief Justice Yuoh, as a mark of respect for the Judiciary and in recognition of its vital role in the governance of the nation. His longstanding presence at these events underscores his unwavering commitment to the rule of law, the independence of the Judiciary, and the strengthening of democratic institutions in Liberia.

The Office wishes to emphasize that the Vice Presidentโ€™s absence from the retirement ceremony of former Chief Justice Yuoh was due solely to his travel to Accra, Ghana on August 13, 2025 to represent the President at a State Funeral which was held on August 15, 2025, the same day of former Chief Justice Yuoh retirement ceremony. This circumstance was beyond his control and should neither be misconstrued as an act of malice nor a lack of respect for the former Chief Justice or the Judiciary.

It is also worth noting that the Vice President has a close relationship with former Chief Justice Yuoh which was evident recently when he attended the Opening of a Children Park by the former Chief Justice daughter.

The Vice President in his statement yesterday to the Honorable Supreme Court, extended his profound respect and appreciation to former Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh for her years of dedicated service to the people of Liberia, and he reaffirmed his continued support to the Supreme Court and the Judiciary as a whole.

Update from the Ministry of Public Works-Republic of Liberia

Buildup to Historic Groundbreaking of Overpass Bridges

Monrovia, Liberia
August 21, 2025:

The Ministry of Public Works through its Special Project Implementation Team (SPIT) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), in collaboration with the Liberia National Police (LNP) conducted a comprehensive on-site tour on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 for the Two China-Aid Overpass Bridges along the Tubman Boulevard.

The Tour was part of ongoing preparations for the Official Groundbreaking of the overpass bridges which are intended to ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance the overall flow of transportation along one of Monroviaโ€™s busiest corridors.

The Tour brought together the Chief of Traffic and Technical Team of the Liberia National Police, the China Road and Bridge Corporation and the Ministryโ€™s Special Project Implementation Team along with the Assistant Minister for Design and Supervision, John Zoegar.

The LNP Chief of Traffic, Alphanso Bindah reaffirmed the policeโ€™s commitment to partnering with MPW and CRBC in ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow throughout the construction period.

The Contractor CRBC is working in sync with the Ministry of Public Works and LNP as regards appropriate traffic management plan aimed at safeguarding local communities and the environment which are integral towards a successful project implementation.

According to the Coordinator of the Special Project Implementation Team Mr. Immanuel Freeman, the Joint Exercise underscores the Ministry of Public Worksโ€™ proactive approach in preparing for the Groundbreaking of Liberiaโ€™s first-ever overpass bridges.

By engaging the Liberia National Police, the Ministry is laying the groundwork for safe, orderly and public-conscious ex*****on of this landmark infrastructure project, thereby reaffirming the Ministryโ€™s commitment to advancing Liberiaโ€™s infrastructure development agenda under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai by assuring the public of continued progress toward modern, reliable and safe road networks.

MONROVIA [Dec. 17, 2024]--President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., today signed the Book of Condolence for the late former Vice President of Liberia, Deacon John D. Gray, at a solemn ceremony held in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building.

The President and delegation were warmly received by members of both Houses of the National Legislature, led by Speaker Richard Koon and Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence. Also present was former Senate Pro-Tempore Albert Chie.

Accompanying the President were several high-ranking Government officials, including Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Information Minister Jerolimek Matthew Piah, and Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye, among others.

The families of the late Honorable Gray were also in attendance, including his widow, Mrs. Laysiah Gray, and daughters, Mrs. Johnetta Zoe Gray Wento, Ms. Felecia C. Gray, Mrs. Precious S. Tilko, and Ms. Maima Gray.

On Saturday, December 7, 2024, President Boakai personally visited the residence of the late former Vice President to extend his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

The late Honorable John D. Gray, a devoted Deacon of the Effort Baptist Church in Paynesville and a highly esteemed public servant, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Monrovia following a period of illness.

Honorable Gray served Liberia with distinction, notably as Vice President during the transitional Blah-Gray Administration formed in the aftermath of the resignation of former President Charles G. Taylor in August 2003. His appointment followed the elevation of then Vice President Moses Zeh Blah to the presidency, after the earlier passing of Vice President Enoch Dogolea.

The Liberian Leader said the Government of Liberia joins the nation in mourning the loss of this outstanding statesman and extends prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of the late former Vice President.

Honorable Grayโ€™s contributions to the governance and stability of Liberia during a critical period in the nationโ€™s history will forever be remembered.
