Senator Tuayen Advocates for Inclusion of Volunteer Teachers in 2025 Budget
By Christopher G Fahn.
Monrovia, Liberia — Nimba County Senator Hon. Nyah Tuayen Jr. has called for the inclusion of volunteer teachers in the 2025 national budget. In the Liberia senate recent session, Senator Tuayen highlighted the crucial role that volunteer educators play in the country's educational system, particularly in underserved areas.
The senator acknowledged the government's decision to allocate funding for volunteer nurses in the upcoming budget, but stressed that volunteer teachers also deserve financial support. "It's commendable that we are considering volunteer nurses, but we must not forget the over 900 volunteer teachers in my county alone," he stated.
He expressed concern over comments made by the Minister of Education, who indicated that there would be no budgetary provision for volunteer teachers. Senator Tuayen proposed that the government could reallocate part of the $15 million earmarked for compensation adjustments in the agriculture and rule of law sectors, which have also seen salary increases, to include support for volunteer teachers.
"The disparity in support between different sectors is alarming," he said. "As the Ministry of Health moves towards privatizing volunteer nurses, we must ensure that our volunteer teachers are not left behind."
Senator Tuayen urged his colleagues and the government to recognize the invaluable contributions of these educators in fostering a better future for Liberia's youth. He remains committed to advocating for a more equitable distribution of resources that recognizes and compensates all those dedicated to public service, including volunteer teachers.
