As part of his postgraduate research, he conducted a detailed spatiotemporal analysis of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes in Dehradun, Northern India, from 2013 to 2023. Using satellite imagery from Landsat-8 and machine learning classifiers (SVM, RF, NB, and CART), this study assessed how human activity and environmental factors have impacted land features over a decade. A CA-Markov chain model was used to forecast land dynamics for the next five years (2028).
The findings revealed a continuous decline in vegetation from 19.53% in 2013 to 9.76% in 2023. This trend signals potential long-term ecological degradation if proper measures are not taken.
His research can help with understanding how afforestation and reforestation efforts can restore degraded ecosystems, the role of remote sensing and GIS in real-time environmental monitoring and prediction, why prioritizing native species is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance and how sustainable land practices like agroforestry and permaculture can preserve vegetation while supporting agriculture. By aligning these insights with policy frameworks, governments and environmental agencies can adopt targeted, data-driven strategies to protect natural landscapes and ensure long-term sustainability not only in India but in similar regions, including Liberia.
Congratulations Scholar, we are proud of you.
