Residents of Malata Junction in Yaindaiwoun voice disappointment over an unfulfilled development

Yandiwoan, B**g County — Residents of Malata Junction in Yaindaiwoun Clan, Electoral District #2, B**g County, have voiced serious disappointment over what they describe as an unfulfilled development promise made by Representative James M. Kolleh more than two years ago.

According to the community members, Rep. Kolleh pledged during a visit to the area to construct a palava hut and a motorcycle parking forum to serve as a meeting venue for residents and members of the local motorcycle union, while also providing a space for community dialogue and conflict resolution.

The residents said they responded by molding mud blocks and clearing land for the proposed project, anticipating that construction would begin shortly after the representative's commitment.

However, they said no work has commenced since the promise was made, and the blocks they prepared have since deteriorated.

Speaking on behalf of the community, several chiefs and elders expressed frustration over what they described as a broken commitment.

"We believed our representative and fulfilled our responsibility. We molded the blocks, cleared the site, and waited patiently. More than two years later, nothing has happened. The materials have gone to waste, and our motorcycle riders and community members still have no place to gather," one elder said.

The traditional leaders noted that many residents are increasingly seeking leaders who will translate campaign promises into tangible development projects.

Meanwhile, representative James M. Kolleh or his office has not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the residents regarding the status of the proposed project.

As political conversations surrounding the 2029 senatorial race in B**g County continue to gain momentum, the 12-year legislative record of former B**g County Electoral District #5 Representative, Hon. Edward W. Karfiah, highlights a career largely centered on healthcare reform, legislative oversight, committee leadership, and public policy advocacy.

Key Engagements and Contributions:

✅ Kicking off the day’s activities on Sunday morning, Hon. Karfiah made a brief stop at the practice ground of the Gbarmue Town soccer team and presented L$9,500 to support the players with drinking water during training sessions.

✅ Hon. Karfiah visited the Light House Assembly of God Church and donated US$500, equivalent to L$92,500, toward the church’s activities and spiritual work.

✅ At the World Over Comers Ministries International (Military Vision), Hon. Karfiah presented US$300, equivalent to L$55,500, in support of the church.

Former B**g County Electoral District #5 Representative Edward Wormen Karfiah has praised mothers for their sacrifices and called on Christians to show more love and care to children and families.

Hon. Karfiah made the assertion during the Light House Assembly of God Church Mother’s Day celebration in Gbarnga.

Speaking during the program, Hon. Karfiah described mothers as “special people” whose love and support continue to shape lives and communities.

He said many people only fully understand the value of a mother after losing one.

“Some of us have lost our mothers, and we know the pain,” he said. “Even when they are old, you still feel safe knowing you have someone to depend on.”

The former B**g County lawmaker encouraged mothers to remain loving and caring, stressing that motherhood comes with responsibility and sacrifice.

He also warned against treating children unfairly, especially stepchildren, and urged families to provide comfort and support to every child.

According to him, Liberia is facing difficult times, with many children struggling and living in hardship. He called on churches, especially mothers, and communities to become places of hope and compassion.

Hon. Karfiah further praised the church for its growth and commitment to serving people, noting that the congregation has continued to expand over the years.

As part of the Mother’s Day celebration, Hon. Karfiah, on behalf of himself and his wife, donated L$92,500 (US$500) to support the church’s activities. He also thanked the congregation for inviting him to celebrate with the mothers.

The B**g County senatorial aspirant further encouraged worshippers to continue trusting in God through every situation, describing God as “our hope, our anchor, and our dependence.”

HON. EDWARD KARFIAH DONATES L$30,000 TO GBELEMAH PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS COUNCIL PROJECT:

Hon. Edward Karfiah has donated L$30,000 toward the Students Council Project of Gbelemah Public School in Zeanzue Town, Yellequelleh District.

The donation followed a communication sent to Hon. Karfiah by the Students Council Government, requesting support to implement their campus project.

According to members of the Students Council Government, Hon. Karfiah has consistently supported the school over the years, which inspired them to reach out to him once again for assistance with their project.

They further stated that Hon. Karfiah is a leader who strongly believes in youth empowerment, support for educational institutions, and youth capacity building.

Based on his continuous contributions to schools and young people across B**g County, they were confident that he would extend his support to their government as he has done for many other institutions in the county.

Receiving the donation, the school administration and the Students Council Government expressed sincere appreciation to Hon. Karfiah and offered prayers for God’s continued blessings upon his life, so that he may continue helping institutions and empowering young people across B**g County.

Dangerous Attempt to Stifle Free Speech - PUL Rejects Amendment to KAK Act of Press Freedom

(Monrovia, March 10, 2026): The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has strongly rejected a proposed amendment to the Kamara Abdullah Kamara (KAK) Act of Press Freedom, warning that the draft “Gender-Based Online Abuse and Harassment Act” represents a grave threat to freedom of speech and expression in Liberia.

Speaking at a public hearing on Monday, 9 March 2026, PUL President Julius Kanubah warned that any attempt to amend the landmark KAK Act would constitute a significant reversal of hard-won democratic gains that have decriminalized anti-free speech offenses in Liberia.

“The Press Union of Liberia is deeply concerned that the proposed amendment would undermine the spirit and letter of the KAK Act, which repealed oppressive laws such as criminal libel against the President, sedition, and criminal malevolence. The draft legislation not only contradicts the progress made but also risks re-criminalizing free speech and press freedom,” Mr. Kanubah stated.

The PUL President further emphasized that, as proposed, the “Protection from Gender-Based Online Abuse and Harassment Act of 2026” would create avenues for public officials to target and punish individuals for critical expression. He stressed that while the PUL does not condone personal insults or abusive language, criminalizing such conduct is a disproportionate and dangerous response.

The draft law proposes that anyone found guilty of using insulting, obscene, or harassing language on social media platform, internet forum, or electronic communication could face imprisonment for up to two years, fines ranging from fifty to five hundred thousand Liberian dollars, or both, at the discretion of the courts.

The PUL maintains that such measures are excessive and unnecessary, as existing civil remedies under Section 17.3 of the Penal Law of 1978 are sufficient to address disorderly conduct and abusive language.

Instead of weakening the KAK Act, the PUL urges lawmakers to disregard the proposed amendment, noting that issues of online harassment and abuse are already addressed in the draft Cybercrime Act currently before the legislature.

“We appeal respectfully to the Joint Committee on Judiciary, Information, Broadcasting, Cultural, and Tourism, and the entire House of Representatives: do not amend the KAK Act of Press Freedom. To do so would set a dangerous precedent and risk sending people to jail simply for exercising their constitutional rights,” Mr. Kanubah urged, while underscoring the growing attitude of some public officials in the judiciary, executive, and legislature to target and punish people for critical expressions.

The PUL’s position has garnered support from prominent figures, including Mr. Kwame Clement, Founding President and Dean of the Liberia School of Law, and Mr. Ralph Nyuma of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights. Mr. Clement, a respected journalist and legal academic, echoed the PUL’s concerns, calling on lawmakers to carefully scrutinize the proposed amendment for its potential to chill free speech.

The draft Gender-Based Online Abuse and Harassment Act was introduced by Representative Nyahn Flomo of Nimba County, District 2, in response to concerns about the misuse of free expression on social media.

However, Representative Sumo Mulbah, also of the House Joint Committee, voiced strong opposition to any legislative measure that would erode press freedom or contravene Liberia’s obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and United Nations conventions.

The Press Union of Liberia calls on the House of Representatives to stand firm in defense of free speech, expression, and a free press – cornerstones of democracy and good governance in Liberia.
