Sweden Government and UNIDO Hosts Stakeholders Workshop in Voinjama, Lofa County

By: Daniel D

In a significant effort to enhance participation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the government of Sweden, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), conducted a three-day stakeholders workshop in Voinjama, Lofa County. This initiative aims to empower women and vulnerable groups, promoting greater inclusion in vocational training.

The TVET vocational institution is pivotal in fostering career development, particularly for women and those from marginalized backgrounds. The workshop underscored several specific objectives designed to bolster TVET engagement in the region:

1. Increase the visibility of TVET's benefits.
2. Engage stakeholders across various sectors.
3. Improve participation, especially among women and vulnerable groups.
4. Ensure effective information flow regarding TVET opportunities.
5. Strengthen collaboration between TVET institutions and the private sector.
6. Promote TVET in conventional academic schools.

Catherine Naserian, the Gender and Civil Society Advisor for UNIDO in Liberia, emphasized the necessity of developing communication strategies aimed at overcoming gender-related barriers in TVET. She highlighted the importance of encouraging females to utilize the resources of the TVET vocational training institution, regardless of their socio-economic status.

T. Mark Korpu, a Communication and Feasibility Expert, also contributed insights on fostering female inclusion. His presentation focused on the creation of inclusive communication tools, allowing rural participants to identify barriers to TVET access and collaboratively devise solutions. Korpu noted that the workshop's objective is to inspire students and stakeholders to develop sustainable ideas for enhancing the TVET institution at the Voinjama Multilateral High School (VMHS).

The House of Representatives has requested the appearances of the Minister of Labor, along with representatives from Firestone, Equatorial Palm, LAC, and Golden Veroleum, to appear before the plenary on October 28.

This decision was made to facilitate a comprehensive review of the current minimum wage policies and the enforcement of the Decent Work Law (2015).

During Thursday, October 16, 2025, sitting, Grand Bassa District 5 Representative, Thomas Goshua, expressed concern that the existing minimum wage does not match the rising cost of living in Liberia.

Representative Goshua pointed out that the Minimum Wage Board, a statutory body tasked with recommending wage adjustments, appears not to be fulfilling its responsibilities adequately, which raises issues about compliance with established labor standards.

The House urged these stakeholders to clarify their plans for adjusting wages and to explain why the Decent Work Law is not being fully implemented across the country.

The lawmakers emphasized their commitment to addressing the fundamental economic issues affecting workers and their families.

The joint committee is expected to review the matter thoroughly and report its findings within four weeks.
