Monrovia โ€“ Grand Kru County Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa has received commendations from political observers and citizens for his reconciliatory move following the appointment of a former staunch critic, who once served as Chief of Staff to defeated Senator Dr. Peter S. Coleman, to a prominent position within his office.

The appointment appointment of Mr. Jerkins Pelenah according to sources close to the Senator, is part of efforts to promote unity and collaboration among political actors in the county following years of political rivalry.

Supporters have described the decision as a sign of political maturity and leadership focused on reconciliation and development rather than division.

Observers believe the move could help mend strained relationships among factions within Grand Kruโ€™s political circle and foster a stronger working relationship for the common good of the county.

As 2029 fast approaches, some have also viewed the senator's move as politically strategic as Mr. Pelenah is key voice in Grandcess.

Grand Kru Health Officer Disqualifies GVL Health Posts After Assessment Finds Policy Violations

By: Patrick N. Nyewan

Barclayville District, October 7,2025 (Grand Kru TV News)- Grand Kru County Health Officer Dr. Learwellie P. Craig II has disqualified all health posts and clinics constructed by Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) in concession communities in Electoral District One, saying the facilities do not meet the Ministry of Healthโ€™s infrastructure standards.

Dr. Craig said a review of GVLโ€™s more-than-65-year concession agreement with the Government of Liberia requires the company to provide modern health and school facilities for employees and their dependents. However, a joint team from the county health office and the Ministry of Health found that the facilities constructed by GVL fall short of national policy on health infrastructure.

The assessment reportedly found that some of the companyโ€™s clinics are operating in one-bedroom structures and other unsuitable buildings. Dr. Craig described the clinics as โ€œsubstandardโ€ and โ€œunfit to meet government health requirements,โ€ adding that allowing them to operate would be โ€œdetrimental to employeesโ€™ health needsโ€ in the county. Three of the companyโ€™s clinics have already been shut down by health officials.

Dr. Craig also said the clinics lack essential medicines, modern equipment, sanitary materials, and adequate staffing. He described one clinic building as resembling โ€œa phone charging booth,โ€ highlighting the deplorable conditions observed.

The declaration follows a two-day go-slow action by GVL workers protesting delayed payments of dependentsโ€™ school fees and transportation allowances, and poor health conditions among other grievances. A mitigation dialogue involving the companyโ€™s workers union and county delegations from the Ministries of Education, Health, Internal Affairs, and the National Bureau of Concessions was held over the weekend in Barclayville.

In June 2025, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) shut down three GVL-operated clinics in Sorroken, Wedabo, and Garraway Estates after inspections found the facilities were operating in violation of national healthcare regulations. The LMDC reported inadequate staffing, nonfunctional laboratory and labor rooms, and no isolation units at the sites.

In his assessment report, Dr. Craig recommended that, until GVLโ€™s facilities meet regulatory standards, the company should support government-run clinics in its operational areas by supplying essential medicines and assigning qualified health personnel to strengthen service delivery.

The Grand Kru County Chief Medical Officer said the clinics will remain closed until GVL meets government regulatory standards, despite appeals by company management and local stakeholders.

FOFI Executive Director Calls for Balanced Advocacy by CSOs

By James Myking Suah

Barclayville, Oct 7, 2025 (Grand Kru TV News) โ€” The Friends of Franbarnie International (FOFI), a leading civil society organization working in Grand Kru County, is urging civil society organizations to adopt a balanced approach to advocacy.

FOFI Executive Director D. Nyandeh Sieh Sr. said that while it is important to hold the government accountable and highlight areas that need improvement, it is equally important to recognize and commend progress made by government actors.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, October 3, at his Barclayville local office, Sieh said such an approach not only promotes good governance but also helps build a positive image of the country and its officials.

The civil society leader called for increased support for the education system and stronger action to address illicit miningโ€”issues he described as crucial to good governance and national development.

He urged the government to put measures in place to regulate and monitor mining activities to ensure they are carried out sustainably and responsibly, benefiting both the country and its citizens.

โ€œCivil society organizations play a key role in promoting accountability and transparency. Their advocacy efforts should be guided by a sense of responsibility to the country and its citizens,โ€ Sieh said.

He also highlighted the importance of improving road connectivity. โ€œIn this country, you need to look at road connectivityโ€”because for anything to happen, you need good roads. If we continue tackling it, people will have a good impression of their country, and Liberians will be the judge,โ€ Sieh asserted.

โ€œJust recently, when our son was president, cars could not enter Grand Kru. Right now vehicles are entering our county, so I must give Boakai credit,โ€ he added.

FOFI said it remains committed to advocating for the development and progress of Grand Kru County and Liberia as a whole, while maintaining a constructive relationship with the government to achieve meaningful and sustainable change.

Friends of Franbarnie International supports and works with community-based organizations in Liberia to create awareness and advocate for the rights of children, women, and persons with disabilities, and to support local peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts in Grand Kru County.
