FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PUL and CDO Empower Journalists and Media Practitioners in Sinoe County

(8 October 2025): The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is urging journalists and media practitioners throughout the nation to focus on strengthening their skills in specialized areas to ensure high-quality and comprehensive reporting across various sectors of Liberia.

During the opening of a five-day training session for local journalists and media professionals in Sinoe County, PUL President Julius Kanubah emphasized the importance of public interest journalism, particularly in critical domains such as sustainable natural resource management.

He expressed concern that many specialized and significant issues remain inadequately reported due to the media's predominant focus on political coverage and personalities, rather than substantive subject matter.

Organized by the CERATH Development Organization, the training initiative is being implemented in partnership with the PUL, and forms part of the Liberia Fisheries Governance Project (LFGP), which the European Union funds.

Mr. Derek Adabie, Project Manager of CERATH Development Organization, highlighted the training's objectives: to enhance the capacities of local media institutions and journalists in Sinoe County, enabling them to produce ethical, timely, and accurate reports on fisheries governance as well as the rights and livelihoods of fisherfolk.

Additionally, the training aims to enhance the advocacy skills of media professionals, promoting inclusive participation in fisheries governance and decision-making processes – particularly for women, young people, and marginalized groups.

About 11 journalists from key local media outlets, including Voice of Sinoe, Liberty Broadcasting Service (LBS), and Radio Butaw, are participating in this vital training.

Sinoe County, characterized by its coastal communities, hosts around 24 fishing communities, making the enhancement of media reporting in this sector particularly critical.

This initiative underscores the PUL's commitment to fostering a robust and informed media landscape that addresses the diverse and essential issues facing Liberia today.

Sinoe County Senator Augustine S Chea took to his page and said these words.

Why Deputy Minister J. Bryant McGill hasn't been arrested? Is he untouchable?

IG Gregory Coleman is dead wrong. No DNA or forensic evidence is required to arrest a criminal suspect. If so, on what forensic evidence did he arrest and charge former Speaker Koffa et al for arson? Or does he apply different standards for different criminal suspects?

That Deputy Minister J. Bryant McGill is a free man is an obstruction of justice. Shielding him from arrest under the pretext of the lack of DNA evidence is a political cover-up. Nobody should be above the law because of their position or political connections. Former Speaker Koffa and other lawmakers -- people of higher stature -- did not have such a dispensation, simply because they're from the opposition, not the ruling party.

Mr. Inspector General, the police do not need DNA evidence to arrest the alleged ra**st; they can arrest him on probable cause -- a reasonable or credible belief (based on facts and circumstances) that a r**e was committed and that J. Bryant McGill committed the r**e. (Note that police is a plural noun)

The following facts and circumstances have established probable cause:
• The 14-year-old girl or victim said she was r**ed.
• A medical report supports pe*******on or injury.
• She identified J. Bryant McGill as the perpetrator.
• The police have video footage related to the crime.
That's enough for probable cause, even without the video footage. The police do not need DNA or trial level-proof to make an arrest.

Using different standards for criminal arrests not only violates the equal protection guaranteed by the Constitution, but erodes public confidence in the criminal justice system. Truth be told, the police under Gregory Coleman have become too partisan. Professionalism is dead, sadly!

R**e is a grave sexual offense. It violates the dignity of the victim, leaving deep emotional and psychological scars.

Worse so, this is a case of an alleged r**e of a minor, 14-year- old, by an adult. This is statutory r**e by default under our law and a non-bailable crime. (See Title 26, Section 14.70 of the Penal Code as amended)

The time for cover up is over. Arrest J. Bryant McGill now!

Greenville, Sinoe County – October 1, 2025

Medical Liberia has concluded a two-day intensive training workshop in Sinoe County, bringing together members of the joint security and frontline health workers to strengthen efforts in preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), while also improving survival treatment and response mechanisms.

The training, which ran from September 30 to October 1, 2025, was held in Greenville City at the Sinoe Women Platform hall in Geekloh Community.

The training brought together representatives from the Liberia National Police, community health facilities, and the Court committed to protecting vulnerable populations.

Speaking on behalf of the Liberia National Police, Deputy Commander Cecelia Howard of the Sinoe Chapter praised the initiative, describing it as timely and critical to addressing the growing challenges of GBV and SGBV in local communities. She emphasized that security actors must work closely with health workers to ensure survivors receive both justice and proper medical care.

Also addressing participants, Physician Assistant Kolubah Zawu of F.J. Grant Memorial Hospital, who also serves as the hospital’s SGBV focal person, stressed the importance of survivor-centered treatment. He noted that beyond medical support, survivors need compassion, confidentiality, and a clear referral pathway that connects health facilities to law enforcement.

The training featured interactive sessions, case studies, and role-play exercises designed to improve coordination between the police and health sector in handling sensitive cases. Participants were also encouraged to build stronger community awareness programs that prevent violence before it occurs.
