Statement on Recent Incident in Kakata's Main Street

Our attention has been drawn to a recent incident involving our City Police during a routine patrol on the Main Street of Kakata.

On this occasion, an individual named Lorpu Flomo was found selling goods on the sidewalk. When approached by the City Police and asked to relocate her market activities from the main road, Lorpu Flomo resisted, insisting she would remain in that location to sell.

As part of their duties, the City Police attempted to peacefully take her goods to their office to enforce compliance with city regulations.

Unfortunately, Lorpu Flomo continued to oppose their actions, leading to a disagreement. This situation escalated and involved intervention from the Liberia National Police, as Lorpu and some of her fellow petty traders began to confront and physically assault the City Police officers.

During this confrontation, Lorpu Flomo allegedly bit one of the officers on the finger and stomach. Subsequently, she fell and required immediate medical attention.

We are relieved to report that she was rushed to the Kakata Health Center, where she received treatment and was later returned home safely.

This incident has prompted us to reiterate to the public that selling on the Main Street of Kakata is against city regulations. Despite our ongoing efforts to keep the streets clear and safe—efforts that were instrumental in transforming Kakata into a cleaner and more organized environment—there are still individuals who choose to violate these ordinances.

We understand the challenges posed by the current global financial crisis, but it is essential for the well-being of our community that we adhere to city policies.

We have made multiple appeals for residents to conduct their businesses in designated areas, specifically at the general market, rather than along the main thoroughfare.

In conclusion, we want to make it emphatically clear: we will not tolerate any further sales on the Main Street of Kakata. We ask for the cooperation of all residents in maintaining the order and cleanliness of our city.

Thank you for your attention and understanding.

It is important to clarify that at no point does the Kakata City Corporation collect money from individuals for container spots.

These allegations are unfounded and serve only to distract us from our commitment to serving our community effectively.

Kakata City Government, in collaboration with the Liberia National Police (LNP), has launched Phase Two of a decongestion initiative aimed at improving the city's infrastructure and pedestrian accessibility.

The exercise commenced on Wednesday, June 10, 2025, and is designed to enhance the appearance of Kakata while allowing for free movement of pedestrians.

Officials from both the LNP and KCC have emphasized that this decongestion effort is an ongoing initiative to beautify the city.

This follows a previous joint effort between the security forces and city authorities, which successfully contributed to the city's aesthetics.

The ongoing initiative is not intended to penalize residents but rather to create a more attractive environment for all.

Authorities are urging Driver Unions, Motorcycle Unions, petty traders, and other business owners to refrain from occupying the main street, a restricted area for sales and traffic.
Despite warnings, some drivers and traders continue to violate these regulations, prompting the authorities to reinforce their message.

Residents are encouraged to comply with the directives to maintain the cleanliness and greenery of Kakata.

The LNP and KCC have indicated that anyone caught violating the guidelines will have their goods confiscated and may face fines.

The aim of this decongestion exercise is to cultivate a better, more organized community that benefits everyone.
