7 REASONS WHY SOME PASTORS DIE YOUNG
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.3 John 1:2
1. CHRONIC STRESS AND PRESSURE
Pastoral ministry comes with responsibility, expectations, counseling, leadership challenges, financial pressures, and the burdens of people. When these pressures are carried continuously without proper rest and support, they can affect the body.
Come apart into a desert place, and rest a while.Mark 6:31
Even Jesus recognized the importance of withdrawing from the demands of ministry to rest.
2. NEGLECTING THEIR HEALTH
Some pastors are very concerned about the spiritual and physical needs of others but neglect their own health. Ministry should never become an excuse for ignoring medical attention, proper nutrition, exercise, or warning signs.
No man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it Ephesians 5:29
Your body deserves proper care. Taking care of yourself does not mean you love ministry less.
3. LACK OF ADEQUATE REST AND SLEEP
Some pastors operate on very little sleep because of meetings, counseling, preaching, traveling, prayer programs, and other responsibilities. Continually ignoring the need for rest can eventually take a toll on the body.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows Psalm 127:2
Rest is not laziness. Even Elijah needed to sleep, eat, and regain strength before continuing his assignment (1 Kings 19:5β8).
4. POOR NUTRITION AND LACK OF EXERCISE
A demanding ministry schedule can make it easy to eat poorly, skip meals, overeat, or remain physically inactive. Spiritual discipline should be accompanied by responsible physical stewardship.
Bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things1 Timothy 4:8
Paul acknowledges that bodily exercise has value. We should not ignore the physical dimension of our lives.
