"Who Killed Yarkpawolo? Lofa Demands Answers as Ritual Killings Rise"

By Amb Junior B. Kesselee

Voinjama, Lofa County— The people of Lofa County are gripped by fear, confusion, and anger as ritualistic killings resurface in the region. The recent deaths of 45-year-old Mayoungor Keleko and 19-year-old Yarkpawolo Moisemai have reopened painful wounds and stirred public demand for justice, transparency, and accountability.

A Mysterious Killing and a Death in Custody

On December 31, 2024, the lifeless body of Mayoungor Keleko was discovered in Duwoigomai Town, Zorzor District. Her death showed signs of ritualistic mutilation, another tragic entry in Liberia’s long history of such crimes.

Not long after, 19-year-old Yarkpawolo Moisemai was arrested by police as a suspect in the killing. He was said to be cooperating with authorities and allegedly shared critical information about those behind the crime. But on January 6, 2025, just days after his transfer to the Voinjama Central Prison for protection, Moisemai was found dead in his cell. Police claimed he hanged himself with his own shirt, a claim that many residents and human rights advocates questioned from the start.

Autopsy Contradicts Police Report

Following pressure from Moisemai’s family and civil society actors, the Ministry of Justice ordered an autopsy. On March 22, 2025, renowned pathologist Dr. Benedict Kolee conducted the examination at the Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital in Voinjama.

The findings stunned the county: Moisemai’s death was ruled “unnatural." The autopsy suggested the possibility of foul play and directly contradicted the police’s initial report of su***de. His family has since refused to bury him, demanding full investigation and prosecution of those responsible, whether police officers or others involved.

Public Reaction: Fear and Outrage in the Streets

Moisemai’s death set off waves of protest in Lofa County. Roads were blocked, government offices vandalized, and the Magisterial Court in John’s Town was burned by angry mobs. Many citizens say they no longer feel safe, especially as ritualistic killings continue without clear investigations or justice.

“We cannot live like this,” said a caller on the Critical Talk on Alternative Youth Radio, in Zorzor, Lofa County. “People are killed, and nobody is punished. Then a young man dies in a police cell, and they want us to believe it was su***de?”

Ritual Killings: A Long, Bloody History

Lofa County is no stranger to ritual killings. Over the past decade, dozens of suspected cases have gone uninvestigated. In 2021 alone, the United Nations reported at least 10 ritualistic killings across Liberia, several of which occurred in Lofa.

Activists say there have been at least 8 major cases in Lofa since 2018 that were never properly investigated. Without accountability, they warn, perpetrators feel emboldened, and the cycle of violence continues.

What Happens If Justice Is Delayed Further?

Human rights groups warn that continued inaction could lead to:

1. More mob justice and civil unrest
2. Growing mistrust in police and government institutions
3. Increased fear among rural communities
4. Dangerous cycles of revenge killings

The Ministry of Justice says it is investigating Moisemai’s death. But many in Lofa County say they have heard this before, with no real results.

Conclusion: A County on Edge.

The people of Lofa are no longer just mourning their dead; they are demanding justice. The haunting question lingers in the air: Who killed Yarkpawolo? Until that question is answered, and until Liberia takes meaningful steps to end ritualistic killings, the fear and pain in places like Lofa will only deepen.

"Over 200 Women Attend ‘She Must Win 2025’ Empowerment Summit in Monrovia"

Congo Town, Monrovia – May 31, 2025 — The Freedom Worship Center in Congo Town was a hub of inspiration and learning on Saturday as over 250 women from Montserrado and Margibi counties gathered for the second edition of Liberia Unite Women’s Empowerment Summit.

Organized under the theme “She Must Win,” the summit provided a platform for women to engage in critical conversations around leadership, purpose, personal development, health, and emergency preparedness. The event was hosted by Liberia Unite, a civil society organization committed to youth and community empowerment.

The day-long summit featured dynamic sessions, including an interactive panel on career development, where accomplished women from various professional backgrounds shared insights, challenges, and strategies for success. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, network, and connect with mentors.

“This summit is not just about inspiration; it’s about equipping women with practical tools and knowledge to pursue their goals and effect change in their communities,” said Mr. Faith J. Major, head of Liberia Unite.

Topics discussed ranged from women’s health awareness and self-discovery to navigating leadership roles in both public and private sectors. The event also emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness, especially in vulnerable communities.

Participants praised the event for its inclusivity, relevance, and empowering atmosphere. “I came here unsure of what to expect, but I’m leaving with a clearer sense of purpose and direction,” said a young participant from Montserrado.

Organizers extended gratitude to all guest speakers, panelists, and volunteers who contributed to making the summit a success. As the event concluded, many attendees expressed eagerness to participate in future programs and continue the journey toward empowerment and transformation.

The “She Must Win 2025” summit is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening the voices of women across Liberia and promoting gender-inclusive leadership and development.

The Library of the University of Liberia is a sad sight to behold. Once a bustling hub of knowledge and community, it now stands in disrepair, its faded facade and crumbling structure reflecting years of neglect under the CDC led government. Inside, the shelves are filled with dusty, outdated and inadequate books, some with torn pages or missing covers. The furniture is worn and tattered, with broken chairs and tables that have seen better days. The lighting is dim, making it difficult to read or study comfortably. It's still in an Asian and Stone days conditions.

Despite its deteriorating condition, the dilapidated public library still serves as a beacon of hope for brothers and sisters who seek knowledge and information at the University of Liberia. It remains a gathering place for conscious minded students. Our Brothers and sisters come here to complete their homework assignments, do research, and avid readers try to find solace within its worn-out walls.

Unfortunately, due to limited funding and resources, the staff struggles to maintain the library and provide adequate services to our veterans and comrades attending the states runs University. The collection lacks new and relevant books, and modern amenities. The staff does their best to keep the Library open and accessible, but the lack of support hampers their efforts to create a vibrant and engaging space for students.

The Universisty of Liberia Main-Campus is a dilapidated public Library that's struggles to meet the needs of brilliant comrades thriving for quality and advanced education. Hope the UP government sees the potential and well-fund the Library for knowledge and learning. It is crucial to recognize the importance of investing in public libraries to ensure equal access to information and opportunities for all.

The Japanese government has launched an appeal to young people to drink alcohol.

Japan wants more of its young people to drink alcohol because it has been discovered that less alcohol is consumed by the younger generation than their parents especially since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government through the national tax agency said, the lack of consumption of alcohol has reduced the revenue gotten from alcoholic beverages.

To generate more revenue, Japan's national tax agency intervened and held a national competition.

The "Sake Viva!" initiative asks young people to come up with strategies and ideas to make drinking more appealing to the younger generation. The contest is for those aged 20-39 years.

The National Tax Agency website says, “The domestic alcoholic beverage market is shrinking due to demographic changes such as the declining birthrate and ageing population, and lifestyle changes due to the impact of COVID-19,”

“In this project, by asking young people to propose their business plans, we will appeal to young people for the development and promotion of Japanese alcoholic beverages, and at the same time, we will revitalize the industry by announcing excellent plans.”
