The Lead campaigne‍r‌ fo‍r‍ the “Free Charles Taylor” movement, Solomon Weawea, has renewed calls for the release of former Liberian President Charles‌ Taylor, arguing that other Africa‌n leader‍s who allegedl‌y suppor‌ted armed conflicts in the region w‌ere never pro‍s‍ecut‍ed.

I‌n a statement‍, Weawea claimed that several former‌ African presidents, including Johnn‌y Paul Koroma of Sierra Leone, Lansana Cont‌é, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and Blaise Compao‍ré,‍ were all linked to regio‌nal conflicts during the Liberia‌n civil war era.

Taylor was convicted i‌n 2012 by t‌he S‌pecial Court for S‍ierra L‌eone for aiding and abettin‌g rebel forces of the Revolutionary United Front (R‌UF) d‌uring S‍ierra Leone’s bruta‌l civil war.

Pr‌osecutors said he provided weap‍ons, traini‍ng, and support in exchange for the so-called “blood diamonds.” He is currently serving a 50-year‌ prison sentence in the United Kingdom.

Historically, regional tensions during the Libe‌r‌i‌an and Sierra Leonean civil wars often involved neighboring governments and armed movement‍s. Koroma was associated w‍i‍th Sierra Leone’s Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AF‌RC‍), which al‍lied with the RUF during the conflict.

Conté’s Gui‍nea was involved‍ in borde‌r clashes‍ and‌ supported ant‌i-Taylor fact‌ions dur‍ing Liberia’s wars.

Houphouët-Boigny was widely viewed as a‍n early regional supporter of anti-Samue‌l Doe rebel mov‌eme‍nts, while Compa‍oré faced longstanding‍ accusations of facilitating reg‍ional i‍ns‍urgent groups, claims he r‍epeatedly denied.

Weawea described Taylor’s prosecution as selectiv‍e‍ justice and vowed that ca‍mpaigners would continue advocating for what they called equal accountability‍ for‌ all leader‌s connected to West African conflicts.

U.S. Reaffirms Support for Liberia’s Ebola Preparedness Efforts

U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and international partners, joined the Government of Liberia in a high-level briefing with H.E Joseph Nyuma Boakai on national preparedness for Ebola virus disease and other emerging health threats.

The United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening global health security through close cooperation on surveillance, laboratory capacity, and rapid response systems.

President Boakai emphasized the need to close preparedness gaps, improve coordination across institutions, and strengthen sanitation conditions in health facilities as part of national readiness efforts.

The United States continues to work alongside Liberia and regional partners to reinforce outbreak preparedness and protect public health.

Weawea Condemns Kolubah Expulsion, Calls for Legislative Reform

The Executive Director of the Liberia National Heritage and Culture Development Association (LNHCDA), Solomon Weawea, is once again speaking out against the expulsion of Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah.

In a statement shared on social media, Weawea said the punishment handed down to Kolubah was excessive and failed to address the broader national debate surrounding the matter.

“We must focus on the primary issue at hand — the national debate. The expulsion of Yekeh Kolubah, an elected government official, is not a prudent decision. A less severe disciplinary measure would have been more suitable,” Weawea stated.

He acknowledged that Kolubah’s comments were inappropriate for a national leader but argued that they did not justify such a harsh penalty. According to him, the situation was comparable to “speaking out of turn,” noting that Kolubah would have been protected had the remarks been made during plenary proceedings.

Weawea also called on the Legislature to organize leadership workshops aimed at improving dialogue and strengthening cooperation among lawmakers. “We urge the Legislature to hold leadership workshops to brainstorm on issues, so individuals can learn from one another.

God bless Liberia,” he added.
Representative Kolubah was expelled earlier this year following controversial remarks linked to the Liberia-Guinea border issue.

The complaint against him was filed by Montserrado County District #3 Representative Sumo Mulbah and Liberia National Police Inspector General Gregory O. W. Coleman, who cited concerns over national security and public safety.

Kolubah had requested additional time to secure legal representation but was reportedly granted only two days. The Supreme Court later scheduled a conference with House leadership on April 20, 2026, to hear his petition for a writ of prohibition.

Prominent Liberian figures, including Senator Abraham Darius Dillon and former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, have also expressed concerns over the expulsion, arguing that the decision raises questions about due process and freedom of expression.

“Liberia Must Not Normalize Violence Against Women”
—Alpha Phi Alpha Demands Justice Over Public Humiliation Incident

The Liberian Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated has strongly condemned a disturbing incident in which a young woman was allegedly stripped naked in public and subjected to humiliation and abuse.

The group, however, described the act as a serious violation of human dignity and a painful reflection of the growing threat of gender-based violence in Liberia.

In a statement issued Friday, the fraternity said the incident represents “a grave violation of fundamental human rights” and called on authorities to move swiftly in investigating the matter and ensuring that those responsible are prosecuted.

The organization expressed deep concern over what it described as a persistent culture of violence and abuse targeting women and girls across the country, warning that silence and inaction could embolden perpetrators and weaken public confidence in the justice system.

“Such cruel and degrading acts cannot and must not be normalized, excused, or ignored under any circumstance,” the statement emphasized.

“The public stripping and humiliation of any woman is not only an assault on the individual victim, but also an attack on the collective conscience of our nation," the group noted.

The fraternity said Liberia is at a critical moment where institutions and citizens alike must take a firm stand against all forms of violence against women, especially acts that seek to shame, intimidate, or dehumanize victims in public spaces.

Alpha Phi Alpha called on the Government of Liberia, particularly the Liberia National Police, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and other relevant institutions, to launch what it termed a “swift, transparent, and impartial investigation” into the incident.

The group stressed that accountability is essential to restoring public trust and deterring future abuses, and asserted, “We urge the authorities to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice to the full extent of the law."

Beyond calls for prosecution, the fraternity also appealed for immediate psychological, legal, and social support for the victim, including counseling and protection services to help her recover from the trauma.

The incident has sparked renewed public debate over gender-based violence in Liberia, with many citizens and advocacy groups demanding stronger enforcement of laws intended to protect women and girls from abuse and exploitation.

Women’s rights advocates have repeatedly warned that public humiliation, mob violence, and sexual abuse continue to rise in some communities, often fueled by impunity, harmful social norms, and weak institutional responses.

Alpha Phi Alpha, known globally for its advocacy on justice and social issues, reaffirmed its solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and pledged continued support for efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable women and girls throughout Liberia.

“As an organization committed to leadership, justice, service, and advocacy, we stand in solidarity with all victims and survivors of gender-based violence,” the fraternity stated.

“We remain committed to supporting efforts for accountability under the law and the advancement of a safer and more just society for all Liberians," the group added.

Meanwhile, the fraternity concluded with a strong warning that Liberia cannot afford to tolerate violence against women in any form.

“Silence in the face of violence only empowers perpetrators. Liberia must send a clear and unwavering message that violence, sexual assault, and the public humiliation of women will not be tolerated," the statement declared.
