Amplifying Rights Network Condemns Harassment, Mob Violence Against Young Woman at Red Light

By Stephanie M. Duncan

The Amplifying Rights Network has strongly condemned what it described as a disturbing act of sexual harassment, public humiliation, and mob violence against a young woman at Red Light over her mode of dressing.

In a press statement , the organization described the incident as unlawful and a gross violation of the victim’s fundamental human rights.

According to the group, no woman or girl deserves to be harassed, assaulted, or subjected to violence because of what she wears. The organization noted that blaming victims based on their dressing only reinforces harmful gender stereotypes and promotes a culture where violence against women and girls becomes normalized.

“The assault on her dignity and bodily autonomy simply because of her mode of dressing is unacceptable,” the statement emphasized.

The organization further stated that the incident serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger public awareness and education surrounding gender rights, consent, respect, and non-violence in society.

As part of efforts to address such incidents, the Amplifying Rights Network called for increased investment in Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in schools and communities across Liberia.

The group explained that proper sexuality education helps young people understand issues of consent, mutual respect, bodily autonomy, gender equality, and responsible behavior while challenging harmful social norms that contribute to sexual and gender-based violence.

The organization also urged community leaders, parents, schools, religious institutions, youth groups, and policymakers to work collectively in promoting values of tolerance, respect, and protection for women and girls.

“Violence should never be justified under the guise of morality or culture,” the statement added.

The rights group is also calling on relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that all those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.

The organization stressed that justice must prevail and that concrete measures should be taken to prevent future occurrences of mob violence and harassment against women and girls.
