Citizens Left in the Dark While Foreign Embassy Makes the Announcement
In Liberia, major government decisions that affect the entire country are expected to be open to the public and discussed with lawmakers before being finalized. But this Ivanhoe deal came out of nowhere. The signing reportedly happened on July 4, a Sunday, which raises even more questions. Grand Bassa Representative Matthew Joe was among the first to speak out. He asked a simple but serious question: Why would the government sign such an important deal on a weekend, outside of regular working hours, and without informing the public?
To many, it feels like the government chose to keep this away from the public for a reason. And when governments start hiding things, trust begins to disappear. That trust is already weak in Liberia, where years of corruption and broken promises have left people disillusioned.
