Dear parishioners,

Liberia and several neighboring countries are currently experiencing a rise in monkeypox cases. This illness is transmissible through close contact, including respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces.

The traditional practice of sharing a single communion chalice, while deeply rooted in our faith, presents a potential risk for transmission, especially to our elderly members and those with underlying health conditions.

In light of this and in consultation with the clergy and vestry, the health committee respectfully recommends the following precautionary measures to minimize health risks while maintaining the sanctity of our worship:

1. Offer individual communion cups as an alternative to the common chalice for those who prefer it, ensuring that no one feels compelled to choose between their faith and their health.
2. Encourage hand hygiene before communion, possibly by placing hand sanitizers at the entrance or just before the communion rail.
3. Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces, especially pews, railings, and shared objects.
4. Practicing social distancing as much as possible within the edifice of the church.

These measures will not only protect our members but also demonstrate our church’s commitment to being a safe, welcoming, and health-conscious spiritual home.
