Min. Kruah Welcomes Sentencing Of Female Human Trafficker

The Chairman of the National Human Trafficking Taskforce of Liberia and Minister of Labour, Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, Sr., has welcomed the sentencing of Ms. Esther Asuaquo, a Nigerian national, to ten (10) years imprisonment for human trafficking.

Ms. Asuaquo was convicted and sentenced by the 7th Judicial Circuit Court in Grand Gedeh County in the case Republic of Liberia vs. Esther Asuaquo, following months of legal proceedings.

According to court records, Ms. Asuaquo trafficked three Nigerian female minors between the ages of 15 and 19 in 2025 under the pretense of bringing them to Liberia to work in a beauty salon. Instead, she allegedly transported the victims to an illegal gold mining site where they were coerced into prostitution for her financial benefit.

The conviction marks the second successful prosecution of human traffickers by Liberian courts within the last six months. Another human trafficking case is currently ongoing before the 5th Judicial Circuit Court in Grand Cape Mount County in the matter titled Republic of Liberia vs. Bendu Kamara and Others, involving the alleged trafficking of four children, including three boys and one girl.

Earlier this year, Criminal Court “A” at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia also convicted and sentenced five Liberian women for trafficking fourteen children between the ages of five and fourteen.

Speaking to journalists following the sentencing of Ms. Asuaquo, Minister Kruah pledged that the Government of Liberia would intensify efforts to investigate, indict, and prosecute individuals involved in human trafficking in the months and years ahead.

He stated that the National Human Trafficking Taskforce remains committed to reducing trafficking in persons in Liberia through the strict enforcement of anti-trafficking laws and increased prosecution of alleged traffickers.

Minister Kruah reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking through coordinated, sustained, and people-centered interventions. He emphasized that the Government will continue to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement institutions, including the Liberia National Police, Labour Inspectors, and other members of the joint security apparatus, to ensure their active participation in the fight against trafficking in persons.

The Minister also commended Liberia’s development partners for their continued cooperation and support in combating human trafficking, noting the significant progress being made by the Government in the arrest and prosecution of alleged traffickers.

LIS Launches Liberia E-Border Solution Foundation Project

The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has officially launched its E-Border Solution Foundation Pilot Project at the Farmington Hotel near Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, LIS Commissioner General Elijah F. Rufus described the event as a significant milestone in Liberia’s border management and security architecture.

“It is with profound honor and great pride that we gather here today for the official Go-Live ceremony of the Liberia E-Border Solution Foundation Pillar Project,” Commissioner General Rufus stated.

According to him, the project serves as a critical operational bridge toward the broader Liberia E-Border Solution envisioned by the Government of Liberia.

He emphasized that the initiative will strengthen border security, improve immigration management, enhance data collection and analysis, and support the modernization of border control systems nationwide.

The LIS Commissioner General noted that Liberia is now positioned to transition from fragmented and largely manual systems to a modern, technology-driven operational environment capable of enhancing security, improving efficiency, strengthening accountability, and supporting informed decision-making.

He further explained that the initiative reflects the Government of Liberia’s commitment to responsible innovation, institutional modernization, and stronger inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Commissioner General Rufus extended special appreciation to the LIS development partners for supporting the implementation of the project in Liberia.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Defense, Senator Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus, expressed gratitude to the project’s development partners for introducing the initiative to Liberia.

He pledged to advocate for continued legislative support to ensure the project’s long-term success and sustainability.
Earlier, SOMAPA IT Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Subhaprasert Wongsuwan, reaffirmed his company’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s border transformation efforts.

“We have worked with the Liberia Immigration Service in several areas, including training personnel in advanced border management technologies,” Mr. Wongsuwan said.

He emphasized that SOMAPA IT does not deliver a completed system and expect countries to simply adopt it. Instead, the company works closely with stakeholders to develop solutions tailored to national needs.

According to him, the Foundation Pilot Project represents the first phase of a larger border modernization initiative in Liberia.

The E-Border Solution Foundation Project will begin operating as an entry and exit management system at Roberts International Airport starting June 1, 2026, for an initial pilot period.

The initiative demonstrates SOMAPA IT’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s border transformation process.

Mr. Wongsuwan disclosed that engineers from his company are currently in Liberia to assist LIS personnel with system installation, training, and live operational support.

Representatives from various government ministries and agencies also delivered remarks during the ceremony, highlighting the importance of technology-driven border management and inter-agency collaboration.
