Moses Kollie Garzeawu Resigns as Secretary General of Lofa County Sports Association Steering Committee

Monrovia โ€“ September 18, 2025 โ€“ Moses Kollie Garzeawu, Secretary General of the County Sports Steering Committee of the Lofa County Sports Association (LOCSA), has officially announced his resignation, effective immediately.

In his statement, Mr. Garzeawu expressed gratitude to Chairman Hon. Momo Cyrus, the County Leadership, and his fellow committee members for affording him the opportunity to serve.

He described his tenure as a period of commitment, teamwork, and sacrifice that contributed immensely to the advancement of sports in Lofa County.

โ€œDuring my time of service, we worked through challenges and disagreements but remained united toward our common goal โ€“ seeing Lofa shine in sports. I am proud that under our watch, we helped the county win six major trophies, including two football championships, a kickball championship, one basketball title, and additional runners-up honors in other disciplines,โ€ Mr. Garzeawu stated.

He highlighted concerns over recent decisions taken by the Steering Committee without his knowledge, particularly the decision to part ways with key members of the technical staff and coach who guided the county to its historic second football trophy.

โ€œThese decisions were not based on performance but seemed driven by personal disagreements. Such actions risk undermining years of hard work and progress. We must not allow personal interests to override the greater good of Lofa County,โ€ he cautioned.

Mr. Garzeawu added that his resignation would create space for other patriotic Lofaians to step forward and contribute to the continued growth and success of sports in the county.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Lofaโ€™s sporting programs in whatever capacity possible going forward.

Unity Party Supporters Stage Go-Slow at MCC, Demand Removal of CDC Workers from Positions..

Dnnews Liberia has learned that some workers at the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), believed to be supporters of the Unity Party (UP), have started a go-slow action.

Sources say the workers held a protest on Monday, September 15, 2025. They are calling for the removal or replacement of several MCC staff members who they believe support the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

The Unity Party supporters say that during the CDC-led government, CDC supporters were given top jobs, and they believe this should not continue now that the Unity Party is in power.

However, reports say the Mayor John-Charuk Siafa of Monrovia has refused their request. The Mayor said CDC supporters are also Liberians, and as long as they are qualified and able to do the job, they should be allowed to work.

The jobs in question include positions like Directors, Managers, and Supervisors.

Breaking News: SUP Vows to Arrest Police Chief After Protest Clash.

Following a clash with police, the Student Unification Party (SUP) of the University of Liberia has threatened to arrest the countryโ€™s top police official. The group claims its members were peacefully protesting when officers arrested their Militant Brigade Chairman.
SUP alleges that its members successfully rescued their chairman, who was reportedly handcuffed by police. The group's spokesman, Emmanuel "Polay" Nyan, told DN News that their chairman and other students overpowered the officers, taking him away while he was still in handcuffs.
In retaliation for what they call a baseless arrest, SUP stated that it plans to apprehend and handcuff Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman. The student group says it will then turn him over to the international community, accusing him of human rights violations.

Nimba County Senator Samuel Kogar has rejected attempts by chiefs and elders to mediate his conflict with Vice President Jeremiah Koung in Monrovia, insisting that any settlement must take place in Nimba County under traditional customs.

He clarified that his apology was to the elders for airing county issues on radio, not to Koung, whom he accused of sidelining him politically.

Okay, it is a new week, and something unusual is happening in the Liberian economy. Yesterday, I visited a few weekend markets to gain insight into the persistence of high consumer prices, even with recent enhancements in both inflation and exchange rate metrics. My findings underscore a complicated set of structural and behavioral elements that are hindering the governmentโ€™s efforts to achieve significant price relief for Liberians.

Governor Henry Samoa and the Central Bank of Liberia have made tremendous progress in stabilizing two key economic indicators: inflation and the exchange rate. For example, the value of the Liberian dollar has improved against the US dollar, and inflation has significantly decreased from 13.1% in February 2025 to 7.4% in July 2025 (see attached charts). However, these encouraging developments have not yet led to substantial drops in prices at the market level. This raises several key considerations that require further examination:

โ€ข ๐•๐ž๐ง๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ซ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐‘๐ข๐ ๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: Numerous vendors are reluctant to decrease prices. This phenomenon, referred to as "price stickiness," suggests that prices may rise quickly but tend to fall more slowly. Moreover, vendors are voicing concerns regarding the sustainability of improvements in the exchange rate and the long-term stability of the Liberian dollar.

โ€ข ๐“๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ: The Central Bank has upheld a Monetary Policy Rate of 17.25 percent, causing the cost of borrowing for trade financing to remain high, and has sterilized over L$13 billion to stabilize the foreign exchange market. Moreover, the CBL reports that remittance inflows reached US$425.9 million in the first half of 2025, suggesting more US dollars in the financial system.

โ€ข ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‹๐š๐ : We have yet to witness the anticipated price drop to $14 per bag for crucial goods like rice, as announced by President Boakai. Importers are still depleting older inventory bought at higher prices, which delays the advantages of recent policy changes.

โ€ข ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: Liberiaโ€™s dependency on imported goods and seasonal transportation obstaclesโ€”especially during the rainy seasonโ€”continue to disrupt supply chains and keep prices from going down. My office staff collected the prices of selected commodities for sample markets in Western Liberiaโ€”Bomi, Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu.

With over 80% of economic activity in the informal sector, enforcing pricing regulations and tax compliance becomes difficult, further complicating market behavior.

These factors create a complicated dynamic between consumers eager for relief and vendors wary of lowering prices due to fears of potential losses. This scenario leads to a market that resists the adjustments we anticipate, even as macroeconomic indicators suggest a change should take place.

This raises a significant question for policymakers: Should the government adopt more proactive strategies to stabilize prices and promote reductions, or would allowing the market to adjust gradually on its own prove more effective?

To tackle these inquiries, I have requested that my Senate colleaguesโ€”particularly the Committees on Banking and Currency, Ways and Means, and Commerceโ€”engage with the Central Bank of Liberia, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning for an in-depth discussion on this topic. I am a member of the Banking and Currency Committee. Although we are currently on recess, the urgency of this issue necessitates proactive engagement. This conversation is vital for supporting President Boakaiโ€™s price reduction initiative and ensuring it is grounded in sound economic principles that produce tangible benefits for consumers and businesses. Through coordinated efforts and structural reforms, we can realize the full potential of our macroeconomic improvements and restore confidence in Liberiaโ€™s marketplace.

Ruling Unity Party Suspends 28 Ranking Members including Finance and Information Ministers for Delinquency of Duties and Neglect of Party

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ September 14, 2025: The Unity Party (UP) informs its partisans, supporters, and the general public that, in keeping with the Constitution of the Party and in defense of its values of accountability, and discipline, the National Executive Committee in a Special Sitting of September 13, 2025 reached decision to suspend several of its NECโ€™s members for delinquency in performing their party duties.

Their suspension comes as a result of the persistent failure of the affected NEC members to attend official meetings of the National Executive Committee and their continuous neglect in participating in Party activities, despite repeated reminders.

The Unity Party views these acts of noncompliance and absenteeism as a neglect and complacency of the trust reposed in them and a violation of the obligations of every NEC member to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the Party.

Consistent with articles 19 and 16 sub section 4 of the partyโ€™s Constitution, the affected NEC members are suspended for the period of one month, and with a fine of One Thousand United States Dollars (1,000.00) payable to the Unity Party account during the period of their suspension and receipt presented during the next sitting. According to the resolution, any member who fails to comply with this mandate will be expelled from the NEC.

Additionally, the Special Sitting also resolved to urge all delinquent due paying members to pay their outstanding dues within the period of one month, as the sustenance of the party depends largely on party dues and contributions from partisans. Failure on the part of any executive committee member to pay his or her dues during the above specified period will be met with serious consequences consistent with the Unity Party Constitution.

The Unity Party reassures its partisans and the public of its commitment to upholding discipline, unity, and collective responsibility in building a stronger institution that serves the interest of the Liberian people.
