Texas shooting: 19 children among dead in primary school attack.
24 May 2022
Relatives of children at the school gathered at a nearby civic centre to wait for news.
Nineteen young children and two adults have died in a shooting at a primary school in south Texas.
The gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School - which teaches children aged seven to 10 - in the city of Uvalde before he was killed by law enforcement, officials said.
The 18-year-old suspect had a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines, investigators say.
The teenager is suspected of shooting his grandmother before the rampage.
Local media report he may have been a high school student in the area.
Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Chief of Police Pete Arredondo said the shooting began at 11:32 local time on Tuesday, and that investigators believe the attacker "did act alone during this heinous crime".
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter, whom he named as Salvador Ramos, abandoned a vehicle before entering the school to "horrifically, incomprehensibly" open fire.
Two children killed in the shooting have been identified by US media. Family members confirmed the deaths of 10-year-olds Xavier Lopez and Amerie Jo Garza in statements on Tuesday night.
Dozen people also injured.
Uvalde Memorial Hospital posted on Facebook that 13 children had been taken to hospital "via ambulances or buses".
A 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl were also in a critical condition at a hospital in San Antonio.
The shooting is the deadliest such incident since the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut, in which 20 children and six staff were killed.
News Updates:
The Ministry of Education echoes WAEC Liberia, informing all students, parents, school authorities, and the general public that the West African Senior Secondary Certification Examinations (WASSCE) will be administered from Tuesday, May 31, 2022, to June 17, 2022. The results will be released on July 30, 2022.
Therefore, schools are mandated to not perform any graduation ceremonies until the release of the said results.
Hence, only students who successfully pass any three (3) subjects in the WASSCE, as per the Ministry's policy, will be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies.
The Ministry also wants to remind all school administrators and authorities to observe the ban on parades for Gala-day programs. Furthermore, gala-day programs should last no more than two school days. Institutions found violating and parading through the major streets, obstructing the free flow of traffic, will be penalized.

Last month the governing Jubilee party joined a coalition headed by Mr Odinga.
In 2018 Mr Kenyatta and Mr Odinga declared a truce following deadly post-election violence.

The Mayor of Monrovia is graduating with Bachelor of Arts Gegree in Public Administration (Honours) from the university of Liberia.
Hon. Jefferson Tamba Koijee, Mayor of Monrovia City, Republic of Liberia writes.
Two decades have gone by and all I have tried to do and will continue to do is dedicate my life, loyalty and time to one goal, making Ambassador George Weah President and ensuring that the CDC remains the beacon of hope for all Liberians, irrespective of your background and creed.
Around a decade and half, we achieved a singular and humbling honor from the Liberian people with a clarion call to lead this country to prosperity, national healing, reconciliation and securing livelihoods for all.
In all these years and as a global revolutionary soul,I have been called names by my critics in their unfriendly attempts to malign, denigrate and relegate me to various unfounded issues; key amongst these the fact that I did not have a college education.
My output in the public space has been amazing, at the Monrovia City Government, we have managed to pick up from three hundred employees under our predecessor to now about five thousand employees, with delicate emphasis on informal sector integration.
This milestone achievement has enabled many to put food on their tables even as they try to make Monrovia clean, green and amazing in the subregion.
We have dedicated considerable time to various city development programs and projects, but as result- focused as they are, one concern keeps resonating; why have we not attained a college education.
Many of our compatriots have passed through the walls of academia and it seems we are lagging behind, with all the accolades and dignity that comes with being Mayor of the City of Monrovia and National Youth Chairman of the indomitable CDC.
With all who have sincerely approached us on the matter and those who find it as an way to demean us as if we did not know what we were up to, we got news today.
Our critics home and abroad, we remain indebted to you for all you have attempted in bringing us down; we used your criticism as a source of vigor, rigor and strength and challenge our untapped potential and talents for the overall good of our generation.
In a revolution one has to have goals, strategic objectives and priorities and that singular most important objective then, was joining a cause to emancipate our people from decades if not more than a century of misrule by a handful of elites.
In that pursuit, it was not a time to wear tuxedos, higher heights and sit at some Ivy League school somewhere in the world; that was not the focus of the revolution, the revolution had always been to reach the trenches, engage our people and gain their support and admiration for state power.
That is why in the last four years of the peopleโs administration, we chose a new path, as a boy who only moved to Monrovia at age seven from Lofa County who lost his mom at seven days old and father while in those filthy prisons at South Beach due to advocacy, we now wore the courage to return to school after years of drop out.
There was nothing about titles or portfolios to hold us back, we walked to school daily from the Monrovia City Hall to University of Liberia, we sat in classrooms like any other genuinely in search of quality education and proudly we will be walking out at this yearโs graduation with a BPA degree in Public Administration from the A. Romeo Horton College of Business and Public Administration, University of Liberia.
This for me is a stepping stone to bigger things to happen and bigger credentials to acquire, trusting our country, educating ourselves at home amidst every opportunity to go abroad sent a wave of enthusiasm in not just me as an individual but our country overall.
Here in Liberia and in those classrooms, I was never treated differently. I had to sometimes interact with other colleagues for assignments, write regular notes as a student, take chairs to classrooms when it was necessary and got stimulated and had no Mayor title whatsoever attached to my name at all occasions.
This is the Liberia we all yearn for, where "big shots" rarely enter the classrooms, come out in flying colors and barely know their classmates. The University of Liberia is indeed Lux In Tenebris, Light in Darkness.
To His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah who has over the years been my mentor and inspirer, the man who chose to return to school after conquering the world, I say thank you; President Weah, you made this happen!
Our fellow compatriots in the CDC, you remain more than partisans to us, you are a family and we remain forever indebted for your immeasurable support. Even though I lost my parents, you have all played key roles in making me never feel like an orphan; this degree is for you all!! It is that resolve to keep pushing us beyond our limits that got us here.
To my fellow Liberians and those walking out of those walls soon like myself, I understand how tough it has been for all of us but when we triumph in the end, thatโs what important and I cannot wait to join you all on those carpets in mammoth celebration of where we have come.
To my colleagues from my college, and the graduating class at large, may we bridle for the gargantuan challenges ahead. As we transition to the larger society, let Liberia remain the geometric center of professionalism, linking to practice what we have learned over these very crucial years.
To my family and Church, I connect with you in prayer and submission to God Almighty from whence cometh our grace, blessings and divine favor.
May this degree be an encouragement for some, for others a source of inspiration. May it reinvigorate our spirits to keep sailing to higher heights and may we overcome! Let no one despise you for your today for the future remains hopeful.
Congratulations Hon. Koijee.
