Bassa neighbors knocked out of this year's National County Sports Meet in both kickball and football categories, BUT!
2007 kickball and football champions River Cess narrowly bowed out of this year's County Meet quarter finals to defending champions Nimba; as Lofa beat Grand Bassa in a dramatic fashion to reach the semis.
Having collected maximum points from all three matches; including a 5-0 demolition of Grand Cape Mount in the group stage of the competition, group A winners River Cess knew a win against defending champions Nimba who greatly struggled to make their way to the SKD was their only road to the semi- final.
The entertaining fixture attracted thousands of people from both ends to the SKD; and equally commensurated with the high expectation of quality football.
Nimba took a 2 -1 lead at half time, only for the tournament's leading goalscorer, Cece United's skipper Delton Kollie to increase his tally to 5 goals from 4 matches hence getting the scores level with two goals each for Nimba and River Cess.
Extra and Added time decided matters as Nimba grabbed their winner in the first half of the extra time thereby sending River Cess out of the tournament; but what remains unclear and still very much entertaining even at the full time whistles is a potential protest which River Cess have alarmed against Nimba.
2022/2023 Sports Steering Committe Chairperson Oral Willie has alarmed that his technical team from River Cess reported that Nimba used 4 second Divison players in that match; something that is worth losing their qualification if found guilty by the protest hearing committee setup by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Meanwhile Grand Bassa County struggles continue; despite taking a quick firing 2- 1 advantage at the half time break against Lofa County.
Bassa grabbed an equalizer late on in the first half and went ahead to take the lead but Lofa came back roaring like a lion and grabbed their semi final spot, thanks to a 3- 2 scorelin
