UN, Liberia Strengthen Ties
…As New Cooperation Framework Targets Human Development, Governance
UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia Madam Christine N. Umutoni has reaffirmed the UN longstanding partnership with a new cooperation framework aimed at driving human capacity development, good governance, rule of law, and sustainable economic growth.
Speaking on Wednesday during a media breakfast, in Commemoration of 80 years partnership between Liberia and the United Nations, Madam Umutoni underscored the significance of the new framework in deepening collaboration between the global body and the Government of Liberia.
“The new cooperation framework reflects our shared vision for a prosperous, peaceful, and inclusive Liberia. It prioritizes investment in people, stronger institutions, and sustainable growth that leaves no one behind,” she said.
According to her, the framework, which will guide UN operations in Liberia over the next five years, seeks to align with the government’s development agenda, focusing on key areas including human capital enhancement, governance and the rule of law, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability.
The UN Country Coordinator noted that Liberia’s contributions to the United Nations since its founding have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s peacebuilding and development goals. She commended Liberia’s leadership in peacekeeping and its commitment to democratic consolidation and regional stability.
“As we celebrate 80 years of partnership, we also look to the future, one Liberia, one UN, one shared destiny,” she intoned.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of Liberia, Acting Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Information Culture Affairs and Tourism Lawrence M. Fahnbulleh, disclosed that the government commends the UN for its contributions to peacebuilding, sustainable development and other sectors.
Fahnbulleh extolled the United Nation for its support and assured the UN body that the Ministry of Information to raise awareness about the UN’s role through regular press conferences.
“The Government applauds the United Nation for its support and highlights the UN’s role in various sectors in Liberia,” he said.
Also speaking, Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Country Representative highlighted Liberia as a priority country for UN Women; emphasizing the importance of investing in women.
She mentioned the significance of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and Liberia’s progress in implementing its critical areas of concern.
Madam Lamptey disclosed that UN Women is also supporting Liberia in adopting laws to increase women’s political participation and ban harmful traditional practices like FGM.
